Welcome to the third season of GSL 2020! Today we kick off the first Group Stage and determine the first two players to make the round of 16.

I will not be live updating the scoreboards for this broadcast until afterwards, as the broadcast time will be exceedingly early for my timezone and I will be asleep. In the meanwhile, I recommend using Liquipedia (linked below) for your scoreboard needs.

What are we whining about today?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:03 PM PDT

I won an FFA and I think I'm a bad person (not a toss player)

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 08:53 AM PDT

Sad story I'm a bit ashamed of if I'm being honest.......

A while ago I was playing a free for all..... I ended up getting wiped out by another terran fairly early while I was destroying two other players. Thankfully I managed to hide about 3 ccs and 10 vikings in the corner of the map and also hid about 15 scvs and a few depots across the map so I could see what was happening a little.

Well after a while, I could see that there was one toss player who was systemically going around the map wiping everyone out with a massive carrier + mothership army.

After he had finished killing everyone, he asked, "is anyone left?"

And I, to my shame, decided to do something very dirty...

    I said nothing...

But I copied the line, "has been defeated!" and then put "has left the game!" in my chat box without sending it.

Then I carefully flew one of my ccs into a path where I knew the carrier player would see it and destroy it.

He saw it, pounced, and instantly killed it, and the INSTANT he did so I sent the "has left the game!" chat and then immediately after pasted and sent the "has been defeated!" chat.

I wait a few seconds, feeling both excitement and shame.

Would he buy it? Would it work? Should I reveal myself and GG out? Is this wrong???

10 seconds pass. It feels like an eternity.

Suddenly a game notification for "A draw has been detected!" with a countdown comes up

    A second passes

    And he leaves the game.

    VICTORY.

How would you design a "popular" StarCraft 3?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 08:03 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I know this is a controversial subject but I would really like to keep the discussion on the topic at hand. If you don't believe the StarCraft 3 is a good idea, that Activision Blizzard can execute this in good faith, or that catering to "popular" trends is best for the franchise, I respect your opinion but there might be other, more appropriate threads to voice those beliefs in.

This thought experiment was inspired by the recent thread here: https://old.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/iho6lz/revitalizing_the_korean_scene/

Suppose that you work for Activision Blizzard and have been called into Bobby Kotick's office. He knows that you are good at your job and incredibly passionate about StarCraft. He has just had a discussion with senior management and they would like to "revitalize" the franchise to fit with current trends in gaming. Rules

    • It must be a "RTS-like" game (but okay to incorporate elements of MOBA, 4X or MMORTS games as appropriate)

    • It must have a campaign and multiplayer component (although these could be the same thing)

    • It must have an isometric viewpoint (i.e. not FPS)

He would like you to give a brief five minute presentation on your vision for the project if he were to place you at the helm. The presentation should be from the design (not creative or marketing) perspective.

    What would you propose?

Edit: After reading everyone's comments I have come to the conclusion that we, as a community, don't have any frickin clue what we want.

Can we please give Protoss a better way to wall off against Zerg and in PvP?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:32 PM PDT

Both gameplay and esports is worse because Protoss can't wall off. From a gameplay perspective for the average joe, it's a huge buzzkill to just lose the game because units got in. From an esports perspective - same thing. How disappointing was the Stats vs Rogue last game? The same thing just happened in Trap vs Solar as well or Mana vs Reynor a while back.

"Get gud" is normally a valid answer, BUT if it even happens to literally the best pro-players so regularly in their most important games, something is wrong. It's not possible in SC2 with so much going on to have a handle in all your games on having a dude in your wall - such a thing shouldn't be able to cause game ending damage.

Aside from the obvious PvZ, it's also a huge issue in PvP with adepts. When 2 adepts get in, the game is over. Happened yesterday Mana vs Harstem.

"Units got in and the game is over" is boring and it sucks. There was a thread a while back with many great ideas: Shade/phase pylons like adepts so units can walk through is probably the best way. It would be really awesome if Blizzard can make this happen. Please upvote to support!
