TSL brackets - are they correct?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 01:29 AM PDT

are the brackets on Team Liquid correct? https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/TeamLiquid_StarLeague/5

losing in 1st or 2nd round doesnt change anything in the lower bracket?

quick math: you need 5 winner's bracket matches to get to the finals.

    BUT

if you lose in the 1st round: you need 7 matches to get to the finals.

    BUT

if you lose in 2nd round: you still need 7 matches to get to the finals! which means 8 total, as you have already probably won the 1st round (if you weren't seeded)!

Is this correct? If so, how is it possible not to reward players for winning first round?

Don't have any money? Want to help contribute to the Starcraft community? Here's a list of what you can do to help!

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:01 AM PDT

    Input Matcherino codes

You can input a code in Matcherino that will contribute to prize pools and help out content creators. For example you can contribute to The Pylon Show this week by inputting code "ApplePie" and give the team a dollar!

Get Bits on Twitch by watching Ads

If a channel has Bit cheering you can watch ads and get a random amount (5-100 bits per ad [5 being the most common amount and 100 being the rarest]) of bits to contribute to streamers and organizations. Click on the Bit icon in the chat box, click "Get Bits", then select "Watch Ad".

Turn off adblocker when watching Starcraft content

Streamers and content creators are given revenue when people watch ads, and they will not get anything if you do not watch them.

For YouTube content creators will only get paid:

    • If it's an overlay ad (small ad along the bottom): if you click on it
    • If it's a skippable ad: If you watch at least 30 seconds of it.

[That being said, if the ad looks fishy to you don't click on it; safety first!]

Like / comment on Youtube videos, and subscribe / use notifications

The YouTube algorithm recommends content creator's videos more based on the engagement of a video, and will spread the popularity of it. Subscribing and watching videos as they come out also helps with this algorithm as it takes into account the rate of growth of a video.

Link your Twitch to Amazon Prime

This one isn't exactly "free" but if you already have an Amazon Prime account you can link your Twitch account with it and subscribe to a channel!

I'm not given any money from Youtube or Twitch, so a lot of this information comes from random websites that may be outdated or incorrect so please correct me if I'm mistaken. Please also let me know if there's something I've forgotten!

    GSL Code S 2020 S1 | Ro16 | Group D | Rundown

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:30 AM PDT

I can't be the only one who feels like this Group sort of slipped under everyone's collective radar, yes?

    Group D:

    • Living Legends with eleven GSL Finals and nine trophies between them: Maru, INnoVation, Zest

    • Unfortunate Soul trapped in there with them: RagnaroK

The three most accomplished GSL players of all time - who are still competing - put together in the Ro16... this is why Group Nominations are one hell of a ride. To make matters even more terrifying, all of them were in form heading into tonight, making it literally impossible to figure out who would come out on top; only one thing was clear, RagnaroK must have done something terrible in a past life to end up as the odd man out here.

    Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously

It genuinely feels like nothing and no one is going to stand in his way this time, INnoVation monstered his way through the supposed Group of Death to obtain 1st place in incredible fashion while showing both variety and flawless execution in his play.

In what ended up being more of a whimper than bang, Maru then took part in the usual M5 "rematch" - which was only ever going to end one way - so the Terran settled for 2nd accordingly.

    M1 | Maru [ 2 : 1 ] RagnaroK | ★★★☆☆ | All That For A Drop Of Blood?

    • Nightshade | The openings here were calm enough with Hellion Banshee causing enough problems for the Zerg to keep him busy while the Terran was putting down an aggressively forward CC because we all know a good offense is the best defense. At around 7:30 Maru's expected push took down the fourth Hatch but a lapse of attention allowed far too many Lings to sneak in a counter attack, which took out 26 SCVs to give the Swarm the lead. As we've come to expect however, when you're ahead of him it just means you're even, so after the Terran took a few good fights he wasn't only up in army supply Maru actually had more workers for a bit and as his Drilling Claws were coming in while RagnaroK was desperately trying to establish a base to support his Hive, the army supply difference doubled around 10 minutes in favor of the Terran who was repeatedly denying or straight up killing Hatcheries while his own economy was virtually untouched after the initial blunder so as the overall supply doubled in favor of Maru around 13 minutes the writing and Zerg blood were on the wall for this one.

    • Ever Dream | Things looked to be pretty much the same for a while on this map, until RagnaroK made a clever adjustment to rush Spire in order to deal with the Hellion Banshee pressure. While quite a lot of Drones were lost an even greater amount of SCVs were killed off by the Mutalisks and even though Maru took out the fourth Hatch again, seeing as most of his army didn't shoot up and at one point it felt like there were two Mutas for every one Marine, the Zerg just stomped his way to a finish considering his Terran opponent severely overextended several times even after identifying he was pushing into a build order loss.

    • Eternal Empire | The adjustment from Maru came immediately, cutting out the Hellion Banshee window for the Zerg's expected repeat of Mutalisks. The fourth Hatch was insta canceled again but Maru's initial force, even though adjusted, was still easily surrounded on creep and handily taken out by RagnaroK. Thankfully this time the Terran didn't have a hot date, so he was actually getting his upgrades & planning for a longer game, which played out as you would expect. The swarm's creep spread or more specifically highways looked dangerous at first, but as the game went on it was forced to recede a little too quickly. The contain enabled by Rag's Mutalisks was also useful for a while, however due to the Terran's repeated catches the flock's numbers were trimmed down severely and no real econ damage was done to Maru this time, making his macro engine perfectly set up for the win. As both players maxed out with virtually equal amount of bases, Maru leaned on his mechanics and upgrade lead to start killing off Hatcheries and armies alike, eventually adding in both Mines and Ghosts that tipped the scales even further in his favor, forcing his opponent to run out of minerals and reaching a nearly triple army supply lead before RagnaroK finally tapped out.

    M2 | INnoVation [ 2 : 0 ] Zest | ★★★★☆ | Oh My God

    • Ever Dream | The not a proxy Barracks from the Terran was immediately scouted and the Zealot Stalker pressure did its thing, however I'm pretty sure no one expected INnoVation's followup to be a proxy CC, although I could have been wrong considering Zest did in fact scout for it repeatedly, he just checked the "wrong" half of the map. The game obviously spiraled from there and even though the Protoss was doing some great work by both expanding and containing the Terran to his "two" bases - even killed off a "third" CC kinda carelessly left at the front door - Zest nevertheless failed to realize the math was off and even as he was taking his fourth Nexus while having killed off 20 SCVs, INnoVation was up in supply, truly a disgusting macro monster. The huge army of the Terran eventually assembled, Ghosts arrived in time to deal with the DT shenanigans and everything else for that matter, including five Immortals which without their shields quickly became all too mortal and as there was no Storm or any real splash damage to be found, INnoVation rolled though accordingly, going up over 100 supply by the end.

    • Nightshade | The kind of mirrored openings on this map with not a proxy Barracks versus not a proxy Gate Cyber Core were already intriguing so when INnoVation decided to put down two more Barracks and a Factory there was honestly no other way to describe the game state than surreal. Things once again quickly spiraled even harder here, with Zest going for a Prism and Adepts, eventually figuring out his opponent was completely all in, so as the Terran was pushing out things looked incredibly bleak for him, even more so with his SCVs getting dumpstered back at home. Instead of crumbling under the pressure, we once again saw INnoVation pull off something incredible, not only stabilizing at home but then sieging and outplaying his opponent despite only having Marines and some Tanks to deal with a Gateway Disruptor army and a flank behind him. Some absolutely sick control and a few great engagements later, the Terran took down a stupid amount of units, culminating in the Nexus snipe along with the Warp Prism and every Disruptor, once again showing off how mechanically gifted he truly is.

    M3 | INnoVation [ 2 : 0 ] Maru | ★★★☆☆ | Who's The Boss

    • Simulacrum | The fast three CC build would have given INnoVation a huge edge on the opening map, however Maru's Hellion drop not only spotted it in time to make a difference, the Terran prodigy then murdered 13 SCVs with his initial aggression and then 8 more with some followup shenanigans, allowing himself to go into a longer game like it was nothing. Thanks to both players' incredible ability to macro, the game stabilized from there and they maxed out not long after, initiating the tug of war we've come to love in TvT as both Terrans took their fourth bases. From there INnoVation held off Maru's initial attempts to have an impact on the map, snowballed his Viking Tank lead and then simply pulled off a brilliant siege where he not only killed a base but then took out the majority of his opponent's forces coming to die after the fact. With the bigger bank fueling his confidence, INnoVation kept making great moves on the map, most notably wiping out one of Maru's entire armies around 14:30 like it was nothing, after which the desperate Terran tried to initiate a mini base race however Inno just had way too much so he went for the heart of the enemy Terran base and then simply tore it out with his bare hands.

    • Eternal Empire | I was thinking Maru would be the cheesy player here with his two Barracks Reaper opening, only for INnoVation to one up his opponent one more time tonight by proxying two Starports and a Fusion Core. It was honestly both hilarious and depressing watching Maru try his best to figure out what the hell was going on as he ran around and scanned literally every spot on the map except the proxy location, so when INnoVation's Battlecruisers just showed up over the enemy expansion at around 6:30 it was all but over, with the winning move coming in as a bunch of Hellions to roast every Marine the Jin Air Terran had, making his opponent's insurmountable Air superiority the proverbial checkmate.

    M4 | Zest [ 0 : 2 ] RagnaroK | ★★☆☆☆ | Self Destruction

    • Ever Dream | In order to keep up the trend of everything going wrong for him tonight, Zest's proxy Stargate got scouted virtually immediately and then the Zerg simply went into Ling Bane Hydra so when a few Archons, Immortals and Zealots tried pushing across the map they found themselves infinitely outgunned and to make matters even worse the Protoss lost 18 Probes back at home, meaning the game was basically over. RagnaroK did try making things look interesting by losing 30 Drones after that to some desperate multi pronged aggression, however as soon as that got cleaned up the Swarm was completely unopposed considering only Zealots were being warped in to deal with Hydra Bane.

    • Eternal Empire | Although the incredibly predictable Glaives o'clock build was completely scouted from the Zerg, the secret DT followup was supposed to be the Ace that gave Zest his shockingly only first map win of the night. Instead, we had to watch Adepts try fighting mass Roach and a Hatch for what felt like three rounds too many - there was even an inexplicable round of Stalkers which would have made any Protoss player smash a monitor/keyboard or two at that point - and even though the Zerg had absolutely no detection the DTs came way too late so they only got to finish off the third Hatch instead of ending the game. RagnaroK just got his Lair from there, built a few Overseers and ran across the map to win with a silly number of low tier units, which even though did get cleaned up eventually after doing way too much damage, the Muta addition to the Zerg's composition after that was the final nail in the coffin of the econ starved Protoss.

    M5 | Maru [ 2 : 0 ] RagnaroK | ★☆☆☆☆ | Inevitable

    • Nightshade | Not proxying as if to make a point, Maru simply went into his Hellion Banshee slow macro game and RagnaroK pretty much let him while even getting Roaches to cripple himself on top of that. The then expected Ravager Ling Bane attack never actually came, instead the Zerg just kept taking bases and focusing on upgrades, absolutely willing to play into Maru's strengths. There's no other way to put it, just from his pokes alone the Terran was already fucking his opponent up after that without having to really commit to anything and taking no damage himself at home, making the supply virtually even despite the artificially inflated Zerg numbers. Hatch snipes and denials came galore during the course of the game as you would expect even as Ultras and great upgrades for RagnaroK basically kept him on life support as Maruauders flooded the map and the Terran hit everything on the battlefield at the same time, microing flawlessly and being disgustingly cost efficient. A billion more Hatchery and Ultralisk snipes later, as well as an unrecoverable amount of Baneling losses, just as Rag was once again running out of minerals while the Terran had more bases on the map and was up almost 100 supply over him at 19 mins, the Zerg once again tapped out.

    • Simulacrum | Literally just playing safe with no proxies in sight, Maru went into his regular game as RagnaroK fatally let him for the last time, opting for some Spire play and as the Terran correctly predicted as much things would end a lot quicker here. Maru's first real push - featuring no Banshees, instead a shit ton of Marines with Hellion and Tank support - not only looked like it would end the game, it basically did as even while up on upgrades the Zerg just didn't have enough units, meaning as Maru's rallies came in the fourth Hatch and too many Mutalisks were killed off, enabling him to push further into the heart of the Swarm and tearing it out not long after.

Some incredible games today, definitely played out as the best Group in this Round.

    • Match of the Night - you could go either way with this one, I personally think what INnoVation did to Zest was next level in the context of who we think of him to be as a player; don't get me wrong, schooling Maru in TvT is pretty cool too, but I honestly felt like Zest could have won both games in M2 so the fact INnoVation overpowered him twice was something incredible to watch (one of the rare times I'll give a higher star rating to a series that was technically one-sided).

Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player:

    • INnoVation is currently 8-0 after crushing Scarlett, Rogue, Zest, Maru... this Season feels like it's already over, doesn't it? I thought what he showed in the Ro24 was ridiculous, today was just something else, absolutely unreal level on display and even more impressively such unexpected variety when it comes to build orders and flawless control to go with the best macro in the business. How do you stop this guy? I certainly wouldn't bet on a slumping Trap to do so; undoubtedly on the easy side of the bracket, a Final here for the 3x Code S Champion looks in the cards and I would honestly favor him against anyone right now regardless.

    • Maru chilled out today, literally getting to play the same macro games more or less over and over against Armani RagnaroK to comfortably make Playoffs. Out of the four players that got the bye into the Ro16, he definitely looked the best and ultimately did his job today, although you have to wonder now if he'll be ready to handle a sOs-like opponent next and even then might end up having to deal with TY - historically a tough matchup for him - or even rematch Dark - provided the Zerg Champion recovers from his injury - and even then Maru reaching the Final might only mean having to rematch INnoVation, who defeated him handily and has done so many times in the past. I think for the first time in a long time we can say Maru isn't favored to win a Code S, which only makes things that much more exciting if he can pull it off regardless & never forget the G5L trophy is on the line for him.

    • RagnaroK is going to get a lot of props for at least initially seemingly keeping up with Maru in straight up games, however the unfortunate thing about praise is that it's actually worthless, especially when it's coming from a misguided place. I honestly have no idea what the Zerg was thinking here, he was already made aware going into macro vs Maru isn't going to work from his own experience and that of his peers, really reminded me of how Soulkey adjusted in the only GSL final INnoVation has ever lost i.e. you have to identify when it's time to mix things up, because the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. In short, RagnaroK's decision to play straight up vs a significantly better player made him doomed from the start; it feels incredibly unfair that he had to beat Maru to get out of the bloody Ro16, but it's not like his gameplan was ever going to work so I feel significantly less empathetic accordingly.

    • Zest, on the other hand, is likely going to get shit on a lot which is insane to me because I honestly think he could/would/should have won all four of his games tonight, the fact he went 0-4 is just unreal. It's definitely the case of it just not being his day, from scouting the exact opposite proxy location in his first game to not warping in the free win DTs in his last, everything that could go wrong for the Protoss Champion did, so hopefully next time the ball bounces his way to make up for it, nothing you can do when seemingly the entire universe is against you.

As always, if you think differently let everyone know why in the comments below.

Catch you on Wednesday May 20th for the rematch between Dark and TY - absolutely no idea who takes this, the injury for the Zerg feels like it might be the deciding factor, if that's not healed I do think TY will have a huge chance here - and then for desert it's going to be everyone's favorite screamer streamer PartinG taking on and/or trying to cheese out the - for now - only 4x Code S Champion Maru.

Thanks as always for reading & see you when I see you! (:

    -M
