Thanks to /u/hjalpha and the Liquipedia gang as well as TaKe/NarutO for the info here reproduced! Without you we would all be grasping in the dark, chasing for whispers on obscure forums. Your work is vital to the community and there can never be enough thank yous to reflect its importance.

Thanks to the mods for their support of this and other match threads! You work tirelessly for the activity and improvement of the community. There is no amount of gratitude that feels enough.

Thanks to everybody still watching, playing and participating in threads like this one for the greatest esport that ever was! There is no Starcraft and no community around it without all of you. Keep the flame alive, and stay awesome my friends!

Shoutout to Rotterdam for commentating 13+ hours in a row for 2 consecutive days

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:03 PM PDT

Rotti's commentary has stayed really really high quality despite the crazy long hours. Some other commentators start to lose their minds after talking for 12 hours... somehow Rotti has kept it together and remained his usual fun, professional, yet smart casting throughout the tournament.

    Cheers man!

Serral takes out Inno 4-1 in the finals!

This is Serral's 4th HSC win (and they are all in a row). This breaks Taeja's record of 3 HSC wins.

Also during the finals Take's donation goal for 2nd StayAtHomestory cup was reached (partially due to 2k donation!!!). So get hyped!

In the winner's interview Serral made some promises of participating in other online tournaments and also said he currently doesn't have internet connection for streaming.

Interested in History of Competitive Brood War

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 05:42 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I little background about me - I have been a huge fan of Brood War since about 2001. Myself, just like many others from our time, was just a casual player who played with my friends from middle/high school (I graduated in 2006). Playing online where I could because internet was different back then, I was constantly enamored by the concept of a competitive game. Before that, I went to arcade's and played SF2, racing games and Super Smash Brothers Melee among other titles when they were new, but Starcraft and Smash were the 1st time as a gamer I truly desired to "get better". At some point, I heard of the concept of Starcraft tournaments, oddly around the same time I started hearing about smash tournaments (probably 2003'ish). I started looking stuff up and found out stuff like WCG and MLG, and I a local scene for smash that I connected with and am still apart of. Not to mention, I am still friends with many of the people I have been playing starcraft with since that time as well.

Smash, as it turns out, has had a beautiful history shown to our viewing pleasure from a western perspective (mostly due to the fact that it was the US that had the best scene and players in the world so it must've been easier to initial get started) but I am finding it difficult to find out more about the history of competitive Broodwar.

Now I may be bias, but I feel that from an e-sports historical perspective, Broodwar has had a HUGE impact on what modern e-sports is. I can recall first watching a Korean match where there were cheerleaders, big sponsors, commentators, and all these things that are such common place today in e-sports...but as a kid watching from his dinky chair, CRT monitor, and lonely room, that was something I could have never even imagined. Clans, iCcup, Pro-teams, all the B.net shenanigan's, Broodwar classes offered at Berkeley, Grrr, Tasteless and eventually Artosis, idra and so many others moving to Korea, the crazy announcement that was Starcraft 2, Firebathero actually showing emotion when he won a major, Yellow, Slayers, Nada, (I could go on and on to players here)...needless to say, I am suggesting Broodwar was unbelievably huge and yet, I find it difficult to see where that magic has been captured these days.

I have tried looking at TL, youtube, and I have found some fun stuff for sure. But I suppose I am really comparing it to Smash and many recent speed running histories...which may be completely unfair. There are tons of fun history and videos out there and I get it...Melee, at least comparatively, still has a very strong scene. But I suppose the more often I play competitive games, I see more and more young people totally oblivious to the fact of where all this stuff came from, and if there isn't any strong sources for such a thing, I would be highly interested in gather up info and putting something together.

I know this isn't something that would be easy, and I totally expect to receive some flak, but all I can say is, I have been a pretty passion driven guy for my entire life and it has led to all of my dreams to come true in many respects...embracing broodwar's history (as I tie it to where many of my life lessons came from) and taking the time (since I as well many other have the time now) is just something I have been highly interested in for the last few years with little success in finding what I am looking for - thus I am reaching out to y'all.

    Some reference points;

https://tl.net/blogs/525627-a-brief-history-of-starcraft-part-1 - easily the best thus far

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc0Pgm8lWRw - I remember watching this a decade ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7zMcp7EinY - amazing documentary, and I have been watching the greatest commentary due in history for long time and if I ever do commentary on smash (a few times I have) I always think of how they do it. I would be interested in this, but more based upon history of competitive game as a whole.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tgWH-qXpv8 - Smash documentary, this is something I feel I can make a comparison to, and maybe I just feel a little sad that I am not finding something like this but for, what I feel, is a much more significant game in the world of e-sports.

Anyway, if anyone would have any other resources or interest in such a thing, I would be extremely grateful. Again, this may be something out of the scope of many of us, but maybe, as a community, we can compile some great resources.

3/16 Protoss in RO16 of HomeStoryCup (Analysis inside!)

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 05:04 AM PDT

Protoss is in a broken state at the highest level.

    PvZ analysis:

    • Many people agree Zerg was broken last year. Is it better today without infested terrans?
    • I've analyzed all BO5 and BO7 matches of Reynor/Dark/Serral/Rogue vs Protoss of the past 2 years:
    • Nov 2018-Nov2019: 85 BO5 vs Protoss. 74% winrate for Zerg
    • Nov 2019-April2020: 21 BO5 vs Protoss. 86% winrate for Zerg
    • Shockingly, Protoss has performed even worse so far this season, than last season vs Zerg
    • Remember, BO5 matches are typically semi-finals so their opponents are the best Protoss out there: Zest, Parting, Stats, Showtime, etc.
    • If you look at the few series that Protoss won, none of them were straight-up games. It's cheese strats that are not repeatable/consistent. Zest who beat Serral 3 weeks ago, just lost PvZs to both Namshar and Elazer at HSC. This is what high level PvZ looks like atm.

PvZ source data here if anyone wants to check: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FBw6_th0WslYUC5a4kMpvCGiywvhZd6TSbEleE2Nvb0/edit?usp=sharing

    Aligulac data:

    • Protoss has *not* been the leading race any single week in Aligulac since July 8, 2015
    • Protoss has been the lagging race *every single week* since March 28, 2018 - this is over 100 weeks in a row with no exception.
    • There is no Protoss player in the top 10 on Aligulac
    • Winrate in PvT in the last 2 weeks was 40%
    • Winrate in PvZ in the last 2 weeks was 42%

    Source: http://aligulac.com/periods/

    Recent tournaments:

    • Since the 2019 Blizzcon patch, Protoss won 0 major tournaments out of 3
    • Since the 2018 Blizzcon patch, Protoss won 2 major tournaments out of 18 (or 3, if you want to count Neeb's WCS win at the tournament that excluded all European & Korean players)
    • In Homestory Cup RO16 there are 3 Protoss out of 16 players
    • The best Protoss in Europe (Showtime, Harstem) have already been eliminated by PvP

Blizzard - PLEASE do something or soon there won't be many Protoss fans left watching SC2 and we all lose variety in pro-play.

    We need:

    • Higher skill ceiling for PvP so you can win by skill, e.g. viable defensive play
    • PvZ feels broken in all stages. Many broken strategies like swarm host/nydus even get rarely used, because Zerg can just dominate as easily win regular play. I've never even seen a Protoss make it to late game vs a T1 Zerg in months (which Protoss also can't win) because Protoss always dies before that. This matchup needs URGENT massive changes.

I want to live in a world where Serral has a bad day and loses 3:0 to a Protoss in 3 macro games. I want to live in a world where it's possible for a Protoss to have a dominating year with consistent performance, winning several major tournaments of the year. I want to live in a world where Protoss - just for one week- is not the worst performing race on Aligulac.

Thank you all - I know this is going to be a civil discussion. PS: Have you seen sOs vs Bunny? Sick!!
