From D2 to GM in 3 Month + Guide Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:59 PM PST | Hello Starcraft, Today I decided to make a post sharing, well, how to get from diamond 3 to "GM" in 3 months. Although I've achieved a gm border, people still consider reaching Grandmaster at the start of the season "Fake GM". But even though my MMR is only 5050 right now, I still consider it a great achievement for myself to get from around 3500 to 5050 in a very short amount of time, and here is how I achieved it. This is posted a week month late because it takes me some time to write the guide properly, and by now I have reached around 5250. I'm also only 14 so this probably makes me one of the youngest players to hit GM :D Now I know this is 1 2 3 months old, but please forgive me as taking the time to write a good guide is hard considering I still go to school. This guide will be posted on r/allthingszerg and r/starcraft. Some Background & Intro: (Skip this if you just wanna see the guide) I have been a Starcraft fan since I was about 7 years old when my dad first showed me brood-war replays, and when WOL came out obviously my dad gifted it to me, and for the following years I always enjoyed playing arcades and especially a map called "Critter Planet" that I played for a few years, sometimes I would also play a few ranked games but more times then not I was just too scared of losing. Ever since I was playing SC2 I thought the flashy borders of some players were very intriguing. As of recently, (This summer break) I wanted to achieve some high ranks on Ladder so I could get the borders, preferably with a star at the bottom. Earlier in the year I have played ladder games here and there so I've been able to achieve diamond 3 with Terran, but since I was done with dealing with banes and storms killing all my bio I decided to try zerg. After my placement matches I ended up in plat, and when I soon got to diamond, I realized I would always die because every time I wanted to mindlessly drone up I would tap out due to any amount of enemy units appearing on the edge of my natural's creep. So what's the solution to this? Better Macro CHEESE Proof: On the bottom right of the screen, you can see the date of when I just hit GM, I was SUPER HAPPY Winrate at the start of the season: Now as of 11/11, my winrates have changed to 70%, 52%, 50% GUIDE: These are the 600 games I've played during the current and last season whittled down into a guide. All 3 of the following strategies are considered "Cheese". A common perception for cheese is that it requires no skill, however, that is a false claim. Mastering cheese is all about mastering the details, and the details are the parts that determine how high rated you are when executing cheese. If you look at one who has had many experiences with cheese in contrast to someone who does not, you can see a clear difference. I would like to clarify that this is a very detailed guide, and might be too long of a read for some people, and for that I apologize, but please do read all of it as they are all useful tips is you want to execute the builds well. Also, that is 100% true and not fully shitposting, although there are indeed many ways you can improve your cheese. I SUGGEST YOU WATCH THE REPLAY IF YOU WANT TO LEARN A GUIDE AND SEE HOW IT WORKS FIRST. ZvP - THE ULTIMATE EZ WIN: In this match-up, the one cheese I've had the most success with is Railgan's ling nydus with an 80%+ win rate even at 5000+ MMR, and credit to Railgan for the build. This build is based on the fact that pvz early game defense is completely dependant on a wall at the front, and if zerg can find some way to go behind that wall, zerglings can easily surround and kill the vulnerable Protoss units along with all the probes. So how do we go past the wall? Through a nydus! Here is a replay on it: https://lotv.spawningtool.com/53012/ (vs Rhizer) (I'm still quite happy about that game and surprised that I won, I even got 45 MMR for that one game) I'm serious about the 80%, this is my win rate so far this season at around 5100 MMR. You should also check out his guide on youtube that I linked, it's only 6 minutes long! p.s. After about 30 more games my win rate is at roughly 80% now in zvp. BUILD ORDER: Here is the spawning tool link uploaded by Railgan. - 12 - Drone
- 13 - Gas
- 12 - Pool
- 11 - Drone x3
- 14 - Overlord
- 14 - Zergling x6
- 17 - Queen
- 19 - Metabolic Boost (Zergling Speed)
- 19 - Zergling x4
- @100% Queen - Lair
- 21 - Overlord
- 21 - Zergling x14
- @100% Lair - Nydus Network (At this time pull 2 drones off gas)
- 27 - Overlord
- 27- Continue Ling production from this point on
- @100% Nydus Network - Nydus Worm (On the edge of your opponent's main)
- @100% Nydus Worm - Nydus Worm (On the edge of your opponent's Natural)
In-depth Analysis: - Denying The Scout - This is one of the keys to being successful with this build. The scout can come in many shapes, the initial probe, a secondary probe, or even an adept shading in. You must not let your opponent's scout the lair at all costs.
- Simple/TLDR version: A move the enemy probe with all 6 lings and kill it, afterward send all lings to patrol near the enemy's wall. Make sure no probe get into your main and see the lair.
- The First Probe - In the current meta, most Protoss players like to Gateway scout, which means on most maps their probe arrives when your zerglings have just started. Your lings can chase and kill a probe on creep very fast, but out of creep their movement speeds are similar. More times than not your opponent will just send the probe down to patrol at your natural, in which case I suggest pulling all 6 lings to kill it if it is fast, and if the probe runs, move the lings and try to block it from going anywhere. (Railgan suggest to only use one ling and put more lings to pressure the Protoss's wall, but I disagree with this because I see denying scouting more important than wall pressure, because most Protoss players will be able to hold the initial 13/12 with no problem)
- In some cases, your opponent will leave once they have scouted your 13/12 and go hide somewhere. In this case, it is very important to send one of the six lings to shift attack around the back of your natural, then to your 3rd base and your 4th base, DO NOT send all 6 lings to chase it as you want some pressure on their natural. If you do see the probe, great, chase it and DO NOT let it enter your main again by moving your queen and the 4 following lings to patrol at the ramp, not letting your opponent see the lair.
- If your overlord sees the first probe return home, great, skip that step up there
- If the probe decides to linger too long on your creep moving around seeing what you are doing, once your lings are complete send them to chase the probe and it will in most cases kill it.
- The Second Probe - Sometimes your opponent will send out a second probe once they see your 13/12 and make it go around the map. Your overlord should see this, so send lings in that general direction to catch it. Also always keep 4-6 lings in your natural's ramp/opening and deny any incoming scout.
- Adept Shades - Your first 10 lings that you make should be patroled near your opponent's main patrolling and making sure nothing goes out of their natural, if you see an adept shade send your lings to follow it to deny it.
- Overlord Placement - Your Overlords are one of the key units to this build as it provides vision for the nydus worm. I strongly suggest you hotkey your overlords (I do 2 and 3) as you can quickly double click the hotkey to jump to the vision, starting the nydus worm.
- A drawing I made for it: https://imgur.com/a/xvuiP2C
- Simple/TLDR version: Send your first overlord directly to the edge of the enemy's main, and send your second overlord directly to the edge of the enemy's natural, the other overlords doesn't matter.
- First Overlord - Your first overlord should always be first sent to scout the wall at the Protoss's natural, you can choose to dive in for a while and see if they are putting down a natural base or not. After that, just shift move it back out of the Protoss's vision and into the opponent's edge of their main.
- The purpose of shift moving it back out of the Protoss's vision is to make your opponent less suspicious of a potential nydus all-in, by not letting them know where the overlord is going.
- Second Overlord - This overlord will be made at around 0:50 and at 14/14 supply. It should be immediately rallied to the opponent's natural, as on most maps, it will barely make it there just as the nydus network finishes up. The second overlord's purpose is to pop a second nydus worm at the natural after the one in the main is complete to add back-up (although in most cases it is not needed to win a game). Another very important use of it is if they in some way saw your lair and deployed units near the edge of their main, the second overlord arrives just in time to pop down a nydus and you can unload lings from there shutting down the Protoss's production completely.
- Third and Fourth Overlord - These overlords are not important for the build anymore, what I do for my third overlord is scout around for any kind of proxy pylon or anything, although not necessary. The fourth overlord can just be ignored as it doesn't contribute to your build at all except giving more supply.
- Initial 13/12 engagement - NOTE: DO NOT DO THIS PART IF YOU CAN'T DO YOUR BUILD AT HOME WHEN MIACROING THIS. When you arrive at their wall initially you should have 5 or 6 lings, and your opponent should only have a zealot. You should first send all your lings to attack the building that is furthest away from the zealot. In most cases, the Protoss will poke their zealot out and try to make your lings back off. Don't be scared and make sure all except one ling is still attacking, and pull that one ling to right near where the zealot is standing. If the zealot pokes the lings attack the building this time the one ling can go in and body block the zealot so that we can now surround it, making it hard for the toss to poke out. With this in some cases, you can kill a building which secures your victory because they will have fewer units when your nydus hits.
- A drawing I made for it: https://imgur.com/a/dm3AJnG
- However, more times than not they will make a second zealot and deny your early 13/12 aggression, so the thing I mentioned up there doesn't work every time.
- Nydus Execution - The attack should be with a queen and around 30+ lings. When the nydus network is just done and you've started your nydus worm, your queen should just have enough for one more injection, and after it move your queen in the nydus network. At the time when your nydus network is complete, you should also move all the lings on the map into the nydus, and rally your hatch into the nydus. You can basically just select F2 and move to the nydus network. When the nydus worm is finished, all you have to do is try to get a surround and a move! It is really quite simple due to the amount of lings you have vs the few Protoss units your opponent has.
- Transitioning - If you have failed to kill them with the nydus, it is almost impossible to transition unless they have close to no probes. One of the most common transition is to take a second base and go into swarm host nydus as Railgan has also mentioned in his spawning tool post, however this will be very hard as the Protoss will be making probes out of 2 bases and will catch up fast, so killing them with the nydus attack is crucial.
Against Niche Builds: - Cannon Rush - This build should never fail against a cannon rush. Most Protoss players will choose to still start up a pylon with a cannon in your nat, and go into immortal + warp prism or something. If you see the rush when the first cannon is already done, just do nothing and keep all your lings in your base, and go into a lair and follow on with your build but this time you don't need any lings out of your base. Wait until your nydus is complete and make a nydus on their side, once your lings pop out, they will be overwhelmed with no units in their main!
- One Base Adept - I've seen this build only a few times, it is basically when they wall off their main completely and make go quick glaived adepts off one base and try to kill you. Because they wall off their main in this build, they have to decide to rally the adept in or out of the base, and when they do, your nydus in their main will kill all their helpless probes with no escape. Remember if they ever try to base trade with you, once you kill most of their probes at their main, come back from their nydus with all your lings and reck their adepts!
- Other Builds - As of right now I'm not sure of any other early Protoss builds that you need to react differently to. If there are let me know and I'll be happy to edit here and add those!
That's all I have for this build! If you have any more questions, leave them down there and I'll be happy to answer! Now to Zerg vs Terran. ZvT: In ZvT, the simpler cheese I suggest is Ravager rush, but if you want a step-up to your gameplay with cheese, go banebust. I will include a short Ravager Rush guide, but the main focus will be on the banebust. If you are diamond 2 and below, want a way to avoid playing Terrans, or an easy way to get to diamond, learn ravager rush first. If you want to challenge yourself more or reach higher MMR with cheese, go for the Banebust. AS OF RECENTLY, I'VE REALIZED THE ZvP BUILD UP THERE ALSO WORKS VS TERRANS. Ravager Rush - EZ win vs No Scout: First of all, this build will generally only work versus diamond 2 and below players generally assuming the Terran player scouts. It is a guaranteed win at any level if the Terran player does not scout. The only time I use it is if I know my opponent and is certain that he doesn't scout, it will almost 100% win you the game in that situation since it will be too late for them to defend. Again, this strategy's guide will be mainly geared towards players Diamond 2 and below. Here is a replay of it: https://lotv.spawningtool.com/53011/ (vs Abcake) (I dug into my replays and found this rep from 3 months ago when I was still in diamond.) BUILD ORDER: - 12 - Spawning Pool
- 11 - Drone x3
- 14 - Gas (Fill when complete)
- 13 - Drone
- 14 - Gas (Fill when complete)
- 13 - Drone (No more drones)
- @100% Spawning Pool - Roach Warren
- 13 - Roaches x3
- 19 - Overlord (Send Across)
- @100% Roaches x3 - Ravagers x3 (Morph ravagers at home because Ravagers move 0.7 faster than roaches)
- 22 - Roach
- 24 - Roach
- 26 - Overlord
- 26 - Ravager (Morph at home)
- 27 - Ravager (Morph at home)
- 28 - If the above is not enough, continue ravager and overlord production
In-depth Analysis: - Before I talk about much, keeping ravager production at home is probably more important than any of these micro tips.
- Ravagers - Since Ravagers are essentially the only unit we are going to use (aside from drones), it is important we micro them well. I suggest you first set corrosive bio to rapid-fire, (here is a guide to that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvF0S6p0jlA) This will make it much easier to spam corrosive bios, which is what you will have to do. Another important thing to notice is that Ravagers have more range and speed than marines, which is what the primary defensive unit of Terrans.
- The Beginning - In the current meta, most Terrans playing macro chooses to wall off with a barrack and 2 depots. Your primary target for your Ravagers when they get to the enemy base is to kill the depots first. Your Overlord should be near the edge of the ramp opening up vision for the Ravagers. Rapid-fire your corrosive bios and attack the depots. Due to Ravager's long-range, marines will not be able to shoot the ravagers when they are attacking the depots.
- Bunkers - After you kill the first 2 depots, the opponent in most cases will have a bunker. I will explain the different situations you may face.
- Bunkerless - If your opponent doesn't have a bunker, just walk up the ramp! Target fire the marines or reapers that they have, and if they pull their scvs, kite backwards while throwing bios and do not let the scvs get a surround on your ravagers. After now you just won!
- With Bunker On The Side - If your opponent's bunker is not walling his ramp and pretty far from one side of the ramp, sneak your ravagers up, and follow the steps in the bunkerless guide: target marines, kite scv, throw bios.
- With Bunker On Wall - This is the best defense the Terran can do, which is to replace the spot of your barracks with a bunker. In this situation, you might fail the cheese (This is why I don't recommend this at high levels). The way to kill this is to wait for 6 ravagers, rapid-fire all the bios at once, and time the attack with the bios to kill the bunker without having to worry about the Terran repairing.
Against Niche Builds: - Proxy Rax - Deleted a large chunk for word space. if you're really facing proxy rax, if you just a move to the enemy base you win......
- Other Builds - TBH there isn't any other common TvZ cheese I can think of! If there are any you need help against let me know and I'll be happy to edit here and add those!
Gas Pool Hatch Banebust - Actual EZ win vs Avilo: BUILD ORDER: - 12 - Drone
- 13 - Overlord
- 13 - Drone
- 14 - Drone x2 (Note: When your overlord is complete you should have 2 larva, rally one of the eggs into a gas and make an extractor when it hatches)
- 16 - Drone (Note: Rally this towards the back of your mineral line to make a Spawning Pool)
- 17 - Extractor
- 16 - Drone

- 22 - Overlord
- 22 - Baneling Nest
- 21 - Continuous Zergling Production (Note: All your larva goes into zerglings)
- @100% Baneling Nest - Banelings x6
ZvT vs AVILO: https://lotv.spawningtool.com/54098/ (As promised in the Title, EZ win, he even accused me of streams snipe xD) ZvT vs UpaTreeZelda: https://lotv.spawningtool.com/52139/ (Sweet win) ZvT vs Skyler (TopGun): https://lotv.spawningtool.com/54097/ (This is also how I got to know topgun) In-depth Analysis: - Denying the scout - The most important thing for this build, along with many other cheese builds, is to not get your baneling nest scouted. Generally, I suggest putting your baneling nest behind your mineral line. There are three ways your Terran opponent can scout the baneling nest: SCV, Reaper, and Scan.
- Scan- First of all scan is unstoppable, but usually, when the scan lands, the banebust is already rolling.
- SCV- Almost all Terrans send out an SCV to scout at usually 17 supply, which is something you have to look out for.
- Sometimes the opponent will just send their SCV near your mineral line in your main, and if that happens your lings will just demolish it when they hatch since zerglings run faster than workers on creep.
- If they run back home once they confirm it's a pool first, don't chase it, their reaper will meet up with the scv in the middle of the map and killing an SCV or not early game is not important.
- If they run the SCV into the 3rd, make a turn and come back into your main, you have to bring your lings back on the ramp, and put your queen near the ramp so that the SCV dies before it scouts your baneling nest.
- Reaper- This is generally how I get my bane nest scouted because it is very tricky to stop the reaper if they suicide the reaper. on most maps, the only places the enemy reaper can enter your main is jumping through the natural or jumping in a cliff near the back of your main. It is important to note that once you have ling speed the reaper will not be a problem because speedlings are faster than the reaper.
- One approach is just to ignore the reaper and do minimal defense against it. This means your 6 initial lings can morph banelings on the other side of the map ASAP, and you might be able to do a successful banebust that even if the reaper sees your banenest, it is already too late. You should also try to keep the reaper from scouting the banenest for as long as possible.
- The approach I generally do is to try to defend the reaper. This approach means my banebust will be a bit late, but once I fend off the reaper, my banebust will have around 8-10 banelings and I will also have some more zerglings. What I do for this approach is I put my first lings near the place where the reaper can jump through the natural, and I put my queen & 2 lings at the place where the reaper can jump up in the main. This will stop the reaper most of the time, but if they are really committed, nothing can really stop the reaper scout that early.
- Morphing the Banelings - Generally, if you can, keep your first 6 lings alive and morph them into banelings as soon as the baneling nest finishes on your opponent's side of the map. This happens mainly if your opponent does not send the reaper over, as if they do you will have to sacrifice 1-2 lings to force the reaper to go back home. If you have to sacrifice the lings, wait until some lings are reinforced to make banelings, in this case, you can make 7-8 banelings.
- HOTKEYS (IMPORTANT) - For this build I think hotkey is rather important. I take advantage of the select all army hotkey (not common among high levels but I like it) and alt+1-10 which steals units from other control groups.
- I first use the select all army hotkey (I usually just click it) and shift+1 which combines all units to the first control group. After each time I make units out of eggs, I also shift+1 to make sure every unit goes into the first control group.
- When I morph the banelings, they are still in the 1st control group. This is where I select all the morphing banelings cacoons and click alt+2. This removes the banelings from the first control group and adds them to the second control group. This is super helpful
- For other hotkeys, I have my scouting overlord on 3 and hatchery on 4. I usually put my spawning pool on 5 just for the fun of it (It also makes me not have to click it when I'm upgrading ling speed).
- Execution - This is the most crucial point of the game. If your opponent has already scouted your banenest and if they've walled multiple layers around their ramp, just forfeit the game as 6 banelings won't break through more than 1 layer of buildings. If they only have one layer, break the wall, kill their units, and win!
Against Niche Builds: - Proxy Rax - Since your lings come out so early, and the bunker doesn't even have the chance to finish, just kill the initial marine and bunker and they have no way to stop the banebust.
- Other Builds - TBH there isn't any other common TvZ cheese I can think of! If there are any you need help against let me know and I'll be happy to edit here and add those!
ZvZ: For ZvZ, there are two strategies that I still constantly do. One is the 12 pool spine rush, and another is the 15H mass speedling all in. Both builds will easily carry you through to M3. However, I believe 12 pool spine rush does not work particularly well above M2 range. 15H is the build I currently use in ZvZ to maintain a 50% win rate. There have been people that I've seen have success with 12 pool spine rush even up to 5.5k MMR, one of my friend named RoCK especially. Somehow I still lose to his build even when I know it's coming :P. 12 Pool Spine Rush - THE ULTIMATE STRAT TO BULLY NOOBS: BUILD ORDER: - 12 - Pool
- 11 - Drone x3
- 14 - Overlord
- 14 - Zerglings x6 - Rally all zerglings to the opponent main
- 17 - Zerglings x2 - At this point pull 12 drones (Leave 2 mining) and right-click to one of the enemy's main's mineral patches
- 18 - Continue Zergling production until 200 minerals, so you can afford two spines on the opponent side of the map
In-depth(?) Analysis: - TBH, there isn't much to this build, I haven't done this build in a long time, and since I'm not very good at this build, I do not have a very good replay of this. However, for a reference you can watch WinterStarcraft's video on Drone rushing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F6-etIu4nk&t=300s (Linked to when a ZvZ starts)
- The advanced part of this build for it to work above M2 is to avoid the enemy overlord version. However, this takes time to study ZvZ overlord flight pattern to minimize the time spent to avoid the overlord. I'm not gonna go into much detail here, because I'm no expert at this.
- Warning - This build will lose to basically any build that goes pool first (12 pool without the spine rush, 13/12, 15H and even 17-17-17 gas pool hatch)
15H - Prolly the Best ZvZ Build You're G0nna find: BUILD ORDER: - 12 - Drone x2
- 14 - Extractor
- 13 - Drone - Rally this drone to your natural
- 14 - Cancel extractor
- 15/14 - Hatchery
- 14 - Extractor
- 13 - Spawning Pool
- 12 - Drone x2
- 14 - Overlord - Hide this in your main - At this time rally your Hatchery spawn points to behind the mineral lines
- 14 - Metabolic Boost (Zergling Speed) - At 100 gas pull drones off gas, which means after doing this upgrade you should have 0 gas
- 14 - Queen - Move to Nat once completed to hunt down overlord
- 16 - Zergling x3 - In main
- 19 - Overlord - At Nat
- 19+ - Continue Zergling production, once zerglings speed finishes, A-move across the map
The closest online guide to the build that I do, also where I got this build from is Lowko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFGJKS69qz0&t (HOWEVER DO NOT FOLLOW THIS GUIDE COMPLETELY, DO NOT send the first initial 4 lings out at high level as it gives out the build immediately.) This is me using it vs WinterSC https://lotv.spawningtool.com/54095/ In-depth Analysis: - TBH, there isn't much to this build once again, because it is, well, ZvZ.
- Hiding the Build - There are two ways people can scout this build, by overlord or by sneaking 2 lings in. I'll explain how to deal with both ways.
- Overlord - The only way to kill the overlord is to wait for your queen to pop out, however there is a huge time gap between the overlord seeing your base and your queen walking to your natural from your main. Some people like to poke in to see if you have drones in your natural. Against this, I usually pull 3 drones from my main to my nat at 17-19 supply. People also like to check what is hatching out of eggs at your natural base. This is also why I chose to build my 3rd overlord at my nat, this is in order to trick my opponent into thinking I'm not building lings.
- Ling Runby - People like to send their first 2 lings into the enemy base all the time, especially I've noticed after I got to M1. There are two ways to defend this. You can just A-move across the map once the lings show up (Which is what I usually do) or you can use your queen and 4 lings at your natural to attempt to block the enemy lings from seeing your hidden speedlings.
- Against Baneling Nest - When doing this build, the biggest fear is banelings. This is the reason to always snipe banelings nests if you see them on the other side of the map when your lings arrive. Without banelings, an unskilled or even skilled player will easily die to this build. However, if even one or two banelings come out, it becomes a different story.
- Against Evolution Chamber Wall - TBH, there isn't much to do, just attack the lowest health or most exposed evolution chamber. However, beware that broodlings that come out of dead evolution chambers are deadly! After you bypass this, just A-move and win!
Against Niche Builds: - 13/12 or 12 Pool INTO EXPAND - If people go fast pool into expand, your initial lings should easily hold against their initial wave of lings that are supposed to kill your natural base. This gives you a huge advantage and you can just win by A-moving across the map when zergling speed is finished.
- Against 12 Pool Spine rush - Same way as holding a 12 pool spine rush as usual, but this time its easier since your lings come out earlier. I will not go in-depth here because for one, I'm not very clear on how to hold it myself I as I also lost to it.
- Against 13/12 into Baneling all-in - As I said earlier, your biggest weakness is against banelings. If they just commit in their build, they will likely win as the player with banelings will beat the one without, unless you have amazing anti-baneling micro.
- Against Mirror 15H - One way to play out the 15H vs 15H is by not pulling drones off-gas, and following the build with banelings, as I've said many times banelings are the biggest enemy of mass speedling. However, in a mirror match up, it's basically whoever attacks, whoever loses, because the defender will reinforce faster + the defender has the help of queens. So either make some banelings and then all-in, or just go into macro (which I never do).
- How do you tell if someone is going 15H? It's simple, just float your overlord and see what is hatching out of enemy eggs in their nat. If it keeps hatching zerglings, you know its 15H vs 15H!
CONCLUSION If you've gotten all the way here, thank you very much. This is probably the biggest project I will every be doing for Starcraft 2 as this guide took me 3 months to write with a schedule that gets busier every day. As of now, I just went through a terrible losing streak form 5.1k to 4.7k. For now, I will stop cheesing as zerg on ladder and transition into playing Terran macro. As I've said, I'm still in HS. If you ever need more help, add me on discord at Spy#3417 or Spy#12150 on Battlenet and I'm happy to help any fellow cheesers! THANK YOU! submitted by /u/Rusher0715 [link] [comments] | |
