A modest XvZ Balance proposal: Make banes cost .5 supply Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:37 AM PST As a Zerg, it's been hard to admit, but now very clear that Zerg has had an advantage at the highest level for almost two years now. I don't think that the advantage is massive, or present in all stages of the game, and it's always very contentious to pinpoint exactly what the issues are, but I believe that the mid-late game stage, where baneling comps dominate, is where the problem lies. The issue is this: once zerg gets up to a 70+ drone economy, Terrans and Protoss must either go all-in on mid tier armies, or attempt to transition to the late-late game in order to have a chance. Transitioning, however, is incredibly difficult, especially for Terran, as zerg can send endless waves of banelings to inefficiently trade for economy + army. There's a reason this does not happen with endless roach or hydra/ling waves:
Combined, these factors create a situation where Zerg can leverage their high economy into an unbeatable ground army Without taking the risk of teching up. The solution I propose to solve this is simple: Bane Morphs should cost .5 supply. Banelings will cost a total of 1 supply. The effects of this would be as follows:
The nerf here is really just a nerf to Army cost at max for mid-late game zerg, and a small one at that, but I think that it would really help the exact worst part of v2 without too many unintended consequences. What do y'all think? [link] [comments]

Terran never really was the race with many championship players, but it always had enough. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:50 PM PST Terran never was the race with many high-performing professional players. After the GomTvT days a decade ago, Terran always had a few of these deities that just seemed untouchable, then a good gang of high-potentials, but Terran never the breadth of field that Protoss or Zerg had. This isn't a value judgement, but an observation. Even the data will reflect that Terran, historically, always had fewer people perform high and it'd usually be a select group of individuals. There might be a variety of explanations for that, it's not particularly relevant. Just accepting the potential truthfulness of this observation is all I need for my argument. In the past 3 years, this situation has gotten progressively worse. We joke about 'the four horsemen', but it really was surprising how only a literal handful of Terran players was competitive. They were amazing, and each one of them capable of clutching a tournament win, but there's no group of "B-teamers" following them up and challenging them. In the past, this wasn't a big issue. Starcraft was a growing or at least stable game, we had the WCS infrastructure and the SPL teams that provided accessible basic income to aspiring professional players. The ambitious Terrans had a place to hone their skills, where they could contribute and improve. At any stage during this time, you could easily name 15 Terrans that wouldn't be suited for Code S Ro16, but they would steal games in Ro32 and they would probably upset a player or two here or there. On to the next crucial piece: No longer is it the case that Starcraft is a career path you can invest and risk multiple years for. This is only natural with the decline of the game in popularity, but this is a crucial assertion to make. The infrastructure and the money simply isn't there anymore. Whereas in the past a poor meta was undesirable, but something we could manage, a poor meta currentdays is catastrophic to the "future" of the game. Let's be real here: It is extremely unlikely that future tournament champions are not Grandmaster players already. Simply because it's not worth the risk and effort to try. The ESL announcement does a lot for the current pro's, but 3 years is not enough of a commitment to the scene for new blood to arise. How does this relate back to the meta? In the current state of balance, the predicament that Starcraft is at it's final stage* is extremely dangerous. Terran has a very, very restricted backup of Talent. They always had that, but it was never as important as now. Allowing a tournament meta that is this imbalanced for such a long time is an extreme deterrent to those players that could be the next Maru or HeroMarine. If a young padawan Terran who thinks he can try semi-pro during university for a year, looks at the performance of his race and directly relates that to his own potential earnings, he's just not even going to bother. This unlike Zerg and to a lesser extend Protoss, who have a ton of solid finishers and still see new talent appear every now and then. The conclusion of this is that an entire race is at risk of going extinct. This is an overly dramatic conclusion and Terran is going nowhere so long as Innovation and Maru are alive and breathing, but as the race that historically, for whatever reason, had the smallest influx of new blood, that is currently underperforming in the meta to an unprecedented degree for an unprecedented stretch of time, this is extremely dangerous. There is a good chance that, a year from now, there's 40 Zergs, 35 Protosses and 5 Terrans competing, because this is a vicious cycle. Again, this is an overly dramatized conclusion, but the point stands, and that metaphorical point is a huge problem. -- *This final stage can take years and is not a death sentence, but Starcraft is at the end of the development cycle, it's in sustenance mode, and it's extremely unlikely to grow. Shoutout to Tod for his excellent casting! Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:04 PM PST He is one of the all-time best WC3 players and I feel like that's what leads him to always point out the player perspective for us about what each player is currently struggling to do or which two or more tasks they have to manage at the same time or what they are worried about or how they are using mind games, etc. TLDR: Such an accomplished gamer has so much insight about the mechanics and mind of players, which is such an excellent addition to the cast! Thanks Tod! [link] [comments]
The ramblings of an old man and what Starcraft means to me. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:06 PM PST I haven't played Starcraft since maybe 2002. Sucked at it real bad, like all RTS games. I moved on to Diablo and got into that for years. This was the early days of gaming, the internet, the nostalgia now. I had few responsibilities and was starting to create my own interests. While I didn't play Starcraft, somehow I started watching it. In the middle of the night, after all the late shows ended, was Starcraft broadcast live on some weird media player I had downloaded. I remember some of the best Flash games live, or the beginnings of Tasteless commentary. I would sit on my bed eating pizza and hoping the next match started soon. Then, unavoidably, life happened. Parties, romance, jobs, drinking, prison... a normal life for a lot of people. Before I was 25 I was done with all things childish. I wanted a solemn happiness, but joy seemed like it was too immature. This isn't a bio, I'll skip the many things that have changed over the years. But the end is that now I'm in my early 30s and know who I am. Among other things, I'm a guy who fucking loves watching Starcraft. The game hasn't changed, really. Even Starcraft II didn't change the core style that you don't see anywhere else. My favorite commentator on YouTube likes to say that SC2 is more about who makes the first mistake, while BW is about who makes less. I disagree... This game has always been about who becomes closest to perfect efficiency. It's always a fucking wild competition. This topic is a waste of time to a lot of people. But I wanted to say what Starcraft means to me. It's a sport, it's entertainment, and it's an anchor for me. It's something I can point to and say that I kept the best things close. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:41 PM PST Last year people were praising Rogue for saying Zerg was too strong. In his interview after winning IEM he said Protoss is "really strong right now" and that he mostly won because he got lucky with some all ins. Do people still think his comments on balance are relevant or are things different now? [link] [comments]
What exactly is the problem with Terrans that disadvantages them towards other races at pro levels? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:17 AM PST I think it's time we can consider the different reasons why terrans are at an overall disadvantage seeing from the stats in the pro scene. One thing that special (a Terran pro) complained about before is the fact that Terran units are very "siegy", as in they take way longer to set up and disengage(tanks, liberators, mines etc) compared to other races who can immediately get value out of their key units (banlings, Storm, colossus, infestor fungal). This makes Terran positioning very easy to be surrounded and very hard to disengage Another point that has been brought up many times is the pressure Terrans are immediately put into in terms of economy because, if left alone in standard build, Terrans ALWAYS is behind in economy. This is due to many reasons, whether it be the zerg's natural ability to increase drone count or protoss's ability to chrono our probes. However, one point that most people look over is the fact that Terrans can't build workers while the CC turns into an orbital, and so they have a double disadvantage when it comes to worker numbers. Of course, this could sort of be remedied with harass, but against a god like Zerg like serral, who makes a lot of queens, this may be a tall task.(of course we have mules but that requires bases to be orbitals) One last thing I could think of is friendly fire. Protoss doesn't suffer much from friendly fire due to their unit's health being as high as it is. And zergs suffers no friendly fire whatsoever(iirc) because of their low unit health, however terrans ok the other hand has AOE that sometimes causes way more trouble for their own units than for their enemies. This is a problem since Terrans "usual" form of DPS is marines, and marines are very squishy units. Running away and praying that the mines lock on to the right units during a huge fight is hard and almost impossible when both of the enemy race has cheap-fast moving units that comes up close right away. That's it from me, I know I might not be the most knowledgeable about Starcraft, but I just wanted to voice a small opinion on the matter. [link] [comments]

This week one year ago GSL S1 2019 Ro16 was played. GSL S1 2019 was the last Terran win. Posted: 03 Mar 2020 03:03 AM PST This is fine. We're letting the meta settle on this very large new patch with all these new creative maps where a dozen zergs suddenly became the best players in the world through practice and dedication while the lazy protoss forgot to eat their cereal and terrans should learn to play like uthermal. :) Desingenuous title is desingenuous: Innovation did win a Chinese invitational by beating some foreigners. Good times for Terran. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Mar 2020 02:47 AM PST Recently I posted the following meme which I thought was a funny take on what happened in the IEM 2020 finals: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/fcskc1/the_virgin_serral_vs_the_chad_rogue/ It got removed almost immediately due to being "Low Quality or not enough Context." I'm pretty sure there's no problem with "context" so this leaves the conclusion that it must be "Low Quality" (despite being well received and getting up 7 upvotes in 10 minutes). Comparing this to the recent bob-sponge and avengers memes floating in this sub right now ( https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/fciwv1/zerg_players_be_like/, https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/fclct3/get_some_statistics_or_its_just_whine/ ) this feels extremely random. Are we still randomly banning memes in this sub? [link] [comments]
