Thank you ESL, the IEM was AMAZING

Three different twitch channels to cover all the games, the best casters in the scene, a fantastic live stage despite all the coronavirus problems. Compared to the Blizzcon event, this one was 100 times better. Can't wait for the next one!

TL.net interviewed the IEM Katowice 2020 champion, talking about the calculated gambles needed to win the championship

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:09 PM PST

    Congratulations to IEM Katowice champion!

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 05:43 AM PST

Rogue takes the finals 4-1 in an easy series. What a terrible final, almost as bad as GSL season 3. From the first ingame screen to the last the finals lasted 41 minutes.

Fun statistics fact: Zerg has now won the last 7 premier events (IEM,hsc.blizzcon,gsl3,st2,wcs fall and gsl vs the world.) Last non zerg champion was Stats in Asus ROG in August.

With this win Rogue becomes the (EDIT:3rd )highest earning sc2 player of all time (little over 850K in total)less then 25k behind Maru and Serral.

I come to you now, at the turn of the tide

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:30 AM PST

I honestly thought today would be the day

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:04 AM PST

I think the game needs a bigger shake-up than what we got with the last post-Blizzcon patch. As soon as possible.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:54 AM PST

The last post-Blizzcon patch was the smallest we've ever got and I think that's really bad for the game as a whole.

    A) People are reacting really negatively to another Zerg winning a premier, which just isn't good for the image of the game. Had there been some bigger changes it wouldn't have been as bad, but now the finals looked like every other ZvP stomp in the past 2-3 years. We've had it happen several times in the history of SC2 that lots people were driven away from it due to perceived problems and I think we're approaching another one of those situations.

    B) In my opinion the games at IEM felt really stale. I'm not saying that the players/casters didn't do a good job, but thinking back I can't think about a single map that really stood out to me, it was all very generic with the only exceptions maybe being the 2 gate + canon rush by Has and Innos proxy fac blueflame allin. In my mind the only changes this patch are BL+ Infestor not being a thing anymore and Thors being slightly better vZ, otherwise the game feels pretty much the same as last year.

    C) LotV is turning 5 years old later this year, that means it will make up half of the entire time of SC2. And even with the yearly patches I think we're still overdue for some bigger changes. When LotV came out DK said there was the possibility of removing/adding unit down the line but I guess the skins really fuck with that, it's hard to justify removing a unit when people spend money on skins for it and when you add something now be it a new unit or an upgrade that adds a graphical change like Zergling wings for example you need to edit a whole bunch of skins.

    D) SC2 is not BW. BW can do without patches because of a way bigger part of the game taking place on the mechanical side, it's just a simple fact that SC2 builds are easier to execute which means there's a lot more relative importance on the strategical side of things. Without changes SC2 settles into a meta where there are like 2-3 ways to play a MU properly which is then the only thing you're going to see and I think we're already way too close to that point, considering that we're just at the start of the year. I can't think of a single time in SC2 where a dominant meta has been broken just by player adjustments. I've seen Artosis say that the Adept Phonenix meta in PvT went away on its own, but that also only happend after the Adept HP got nerfed.

    E) SC2 players, viewers and pros are used to lots of changes. The game has always been evolving and changing. Sure, there are also people who don't like changes, but after 10 years most of them most likely left by now, the players who do like changes are the ones who are still on board after all this time. If the game stops changing we're at risk at losing those players/viewers/pros.

    We need changes.

If it's too much work for Blizzard they could maybe also outsource it. The e-sport side and the mapmaking is already outsourced, why not do the same to balance?

Shoutout to Wardi for an excellent IEM performance.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:46 AM PST

It was very nice to see Wardi given his time in the spotlight, which was very long due, and showcase his excellent casting skills. I hope he becomes a regular.

Of course the rest of the casting team was excellent and want to thank them as well as the production for bringing such a quality tournament.

    Maru vs Serral

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:06 AM PST

    Rogue is a genius

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:52 PM PST

I just wanted to appreciate Rogue's ingenious run this IEM. He really smashed everyone in his way this tournament and made it look easy. Watched Dark vs Solar, figured out how Dark likes to play and devised a perfect counter to win 3-0. Watched Zest vs Serral, saw all the holes in Zest's builds and exploited them mercilessly for an easy 4-1 win. Even Serral couldn't do it that fast. Such a smart player. The only one who caused him any trouble was his teammate Maru, who could have won, but didn't play well today :)

I think his image of a macro Zerg from 2018 really helps him. Yes, he can play a perfect 30-minute macro game, if he needs to, but why bother when you can win with a cheeky 5-minute all-in instead? And if he can research his opponent, he can come up with a perfect counter. It dosen't give us the most exciting games, but it's clearly very effective.

    CARMAC/ESL appreciation thread.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:52 AM PST

Just wanted to create a thread to thank the ESL/IEM Crew as well as CARMAC. It was really unfortunate that IEM couldn't have a live audience this time, and you could tell how heartbroken CARMAC was when he announced it. Despite the setbacks, this year's IEM was still amazingly well run and you can tell everyone brought their A-game.

IEM Katowice is an incredible event and absolutely a worthy successor to taking on the mantle of the Global Finals after Blizzcon. Hope to see the best one yet in 2021!

    Lost mission?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:17 AM PST

In first starcraft there was a mission when you play flying zerg units, there were terran bases on the left and protoss on the right.

Goal of that mission was to establish truce between protoss and terran armies by destroying part of their bases.

Why I can't find that mission in remastered version and how was it called?

I for one am happy Serral v Maru didn't happen

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:48 PM PST

Dont get me wrong, I want to see it and it's a bummer it didnt come to be. But at the same time, imagine next year:

A stadium Full of passionate fans Loosing their crap for the most hyped game in sc2 history (god willing the virus is contained by then). A championship that will actually be viewed as the global championship since this one kinda didnt count due to the last wcs. Tastosis behind the desk all the way (no disrespect to all our peeps).

I hope organizers continue to put them on opposite sides of the bracket and I hope it lives up to the hype, a close bo9 with the victor winning barely by the hair of his chiny chin chin.

    THAT would be AWESOME!

According to Liquipedia data, Rogue took 1st place in SC2 tournament earnings

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:25 AM PST

Rogue has $842,659 in tournament earnings, ahead of Maru (2nd with $836,986) and Serral (3rd with $833,217).
The highest-earning Protoss player is sOs (6th with $627,065).
Source: https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/User:Enuaj/Result_counts_by_player/LPDB using Liquipedia data - Screenshot of top 20

Note: I know esportsearnings.com has Rogue as 3rd, but it is mainly because of an error in how they list earnings for WCS 2018 Global Finals. I wrote them a "tip" to fix it in December 2018, but it is still pending response: https://www.esportsearnings.com/tips/15490

EDIT: Also worth mentioning is http://aligulac.com/earnings/ (which does not count prizes in non-1v1 tournaments afaik)

I was expecting more mech vs zerg

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:18 PM PST

I'm specifically talking about Innovation vs Serral and Maru vs Rogue

With all the talk about mech being good, why did they never went for it in a macro game? (unless i'm blanking on some specific game, i think they always played mostly bio)
