Waiting for WCS: Introducing to Reddit the StarCraft Community League (SCL)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:01 AM PST

WHAT IS THE THE STARCRAFT COMMUNITY LEAGUE (SCL) ?

It is a new competitive circuit that aims to include all the european amateur players, from the bronze to the low GM MMR.

    It includes a whole year of events and 28 tournaments. Players will play agaist opponents withsimilar skills and MMR to win, at the end of the year the prizepool, which is about 400 euros for the Italian SCL in the 2020;

we plan to offer a similar amount of money for every community where we will start a SCL circuit.

WHY IS SCL GOOD FOR SC2 ?

Starcraft 2 has always stood out, between all the competitive eSports, for the steep learning curve and the great investment of time required to master the multiple skills that are necessary to exeed in the multiplayer 1v1 experience.

Our project was born from the need to create a stimulating competitive environment which wants to help new players to deal with the initial difficulties but it also offers a strong motivation to the amataur players to stick to the game, get passionate and support it in the long run.

This meets our desire to cultivate and grow our national Sc2 Community, exactly like Ogaming did in France in the recent years.

The Italian testing phase, which was played between september and december 2019, involved more then 50 players of all the leagues and offered a prizepool of 200 euros.

CAN YOU ORGANIZE A SCL CIRCUIT IN MY OWN NATIONAL COMUNITY?

YES ! The SCL represents today the most structured competitive circuit on the Italian scene, but we really want to share our format and expand in Europe.

However we can't do it alone.

We are looking for players and casters who would like to cooperate with us in order to organize a SCL circuit in you're own nation and so to help their national communities to grow, offering a new way to live the competitive side of Sc2 and also the possibility to earn some money.

If you think your community would be interested to partecipate, just send us a PM or write on our facebook page.

WHAT CAN I DO TO SUPPORT THE SCL ?

If you want to support this project and the amateur community of SC2, just follow us on our twitch channel and facebook page, and watch some games of our broadcasts. We will be live almost every week of the year, starting from the 9th of January, and with better view numbers we will be able to find more sponsors and then to increase the prizepool even higher.

    You can find us on

    https://www.facebook.com/starcraftcommunityleague/

    https://www.twitch.tv/starcraftcommunityleague

    https://www.instagram.com/starcraftcommunityleague/

Thanks for taking the time to read this message and have a wonderful year.

    Cheers.

    Straight up

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 12:02 AM PST

I saw a player with this portrait of Maru but I can't find any info about it. How to get it?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:10 PM PST

How do I get into binding my own hotkeys? The default ones are physically impossible for me to use (ex. ctrl+f5).

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:42 PM PST

In addition, I have a repetitive stress injury from playing smash too much and I can't move my hand repeatedly. This usually isn't a problem for the games I play (fps, moba, etc.). Are there any hotkey setups that only use one left hand in the same spot? What hotkeys are generally said to be the most important (ie. should be on the letters or alt_letters)?

I'm also having trouble moving my camera around fast enough to keep up with my armies. I think the "create location" keybind might help, but again, physically impossible for me to use the default. I'd also love to learn how to bounce my camera rapidly between my bases and armies. Again, those keybinds have to be really ergonomic, or I can't play. :/

Noob asking a question about hotkeys

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:42 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm a complete beginner to the game, and after seeing a couple of videos I've realized that people have almost everything binded to a hotkey to be faster. I don't know if I'm dumb but I can't seem to find where to bind hotkeys to select structures. I also tried to search it on YouTube and all the videos are about control groups and other stuff. Can someone help me please.

Hello community, I have clean reinstalled my macbook and it's near impossible to download the .zip for the desktop client app. It always disconnects after a few seconds. If anyone has success or already have it, any way to share the .zip download link? Thank you and happy new year!

Is there a mechanic to make the battlecruiser stop firing?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:53 AM PST

So I was thinking about a scenario of my battlecruiser being low on hp and being attacked by ground units. A solution would be to just move the BC up to high ground out of sight of the ground units to keep it from dying; however, if the BC is still attacking as it moves into high ground, the ground units can still hit it.

Is there a way to move your BC up to high ground and have it not attack so it can hide from the ground units?

    More SC2 players leaving MKERS

I like the gameplay and aesthetics and premise, but I don't like the official campaign story

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 11:31 AM PST

I like the gameplay of StarCraft games. I like the premise of three wildly distinct races fighting each other. I like the classic battle.net lore about the Confederacy, Overmind, and Khala. I think all that stuff is pretty cool.

What I don't like is the story we got in the games' official campaigns. Before people start flame wars, let me be absolutely clear that I am treating the gameplay and the story as separate things. I like the gameplay, artwork, mechanics, lore bits, blah blah blah. I'm criticizing the story not from a place of hate, but from a place of love. I love the game and I am disappointed the story isn't as high quality as the gameplay. I don't like the specific story that we got because 1) I feel like it wastes the storytelling potential of the IP, and 2) it is highly questionable on its own merits and tons of other people have gone into way more detail than I have.

Let me break it down briefly by each trilogy of racial campaigns:

    1. SC1's plot is like "hey, you know that cool world building we wrote about the Confederacy, Overmind, and Khala? Well, we're bulldozing that! Obviously it makes perfect sense to put so much effort into world building those concepts only to immediately destroy them and have absolutely no plan in place for what happens after because obviously we're never making any sequels. Right? Not only that, but we clearly are going to favor the humans over the aliens and shoehorn them into each campaign at the expense of the alien characters. Nevermind that if we want to keep the terrans involved, then it makes more sense to keep the conflict in terran space rather than leaving it behind after the first campaign. Speaking of which, it doesn't make a lot of sense for the zerg to mindlessly follow the rebellion's beacons when they're clearly established to be intelligent beings with their own goals. Not only that, but if they only ever need to capture a single psychic girl because she's an author favorite, then you've pretty much destroyed any good reason for them to keep attacking the terrans afterward. I mean, the plot mostly makes sense in terms of a strictly linear logical progression, but it feels like a lot of very weird meandering narrative decisions, idiotic behavior on the part of certain characters, and a whole lot of wasted opportunities. Not to mention there are a number of inconsistencies between various lore sources at this time in development, like the developers were still changing their minds up to publishing."
    2. BW's plot is like "Whoops, I killed all the conflict drivers at the end of the last game! How will I contrive conflict this time? I know! I'll introduce Earth, even though they were never foreshadowed and I wrote lore that specifically said Koprulu was isolated from Earth (presumably) so that I could give the terrans a fresh start freed of Earth politics. Nevermind that the new lore I wrote where Earth was secretly spying for hundreds of years makes no sense. That effort will end up being pointless anyway, as I'm gonna shank the Earthlings and pretend it makes perfect sense for Earth to never send a followup expedition. Also, a bug girl take overs the sector through a series of lazy and nonsensical contrivances. These include bug girl being a special snowflake that can control the zerg just because (and all the previous lore we wrote about zerg brain bugs is being thrown out for no apparent reason), a magic temple that can destroy zerg (even though it was clearly established they killed all their creators before any such technology could be created) whose magic control crystals are inexplicably scattered across space, the dark templar leader lady inexplicably being brainwashed despite there being no point in time in which this could have occurred, the khalai leader deciding to start a rebellion that his followers mindlessly obey even though he never explained to anyone why he wanted to rebel, bug girl being allowed to go free after assassinating a foreign head of state on their soil when that's completely insane, etc. Basically the entire plot falls apart the moment you try to think about it critically."
    3. SC2's plot is like "Remember how BW fell apart upon critical examination? Well, we're going to write a story that is so blatantly nonsensical it will alienate almost everyone who cares about lore even if they somehow managed to ignore the problems with BW's story! Long story short, a space cowboy loves a bug girl and they fight the space devil. Also, some minor stuff about evolution and politics and philosophy that seems genuinely compelling yet ultimately goes nowhere because the preceding plot point takes over. The ending is Disney-esque and everyone makes peace because the burning legion is defeated!"

I find all that extremely frustrating. There are plenty of stories and characters in the lore that are compelling, like Ulrezaj, Abathur, Alarak, Tychus, Jack Frost, Andraxxus, the bazillion characters in the prose fiction, etc. Rather than focusing on what makes those characters and stories interesting, the games' primary plot was a series of weird soap operatic dynamics between the seemingly deranged and moronic characters Raynor, Kerrigan, Mengsk, and Amon. I actually don't find those characters in isolation too grating: they annoy me because their soap opera pointlessly shreds the setting's world building multiple times.

Let me break it down by character:

    • Mengsk is an evil overlord who replaces the evil Confederacy with the equally evil Dominion. Wouldn't it have made more sense to start with him being evil emperor of the Confederacy? I read the fandom wiki and the Confederacy just seems way more interesting than the Dominion in every way as a storytelling device. For that matter, Umoja and KMC are criminally underutilized.
    • Kerrigan and Amon are technically different characters but I'm treating their xel'naga plot as a single item. They shred the world building that went into the zerg and protoss, leaving them lifeless and boring. Reading the fandom wiki again, the Overmind and Protoss Empire just seem way more interesting in comparison as storytelling devices.

This sort of "shredding our own world building" seems to be a normal behavior of Blizzard. WarCraft suffers from a massive case of it. At this point it's equivalent to saying the sky is blue.

    What do you guys think?

Known error in auto Tournies? Ready up with 1 second left, causes a loss for opponent.....even if they are readied up for the full 4 mins.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:39 PM PST

This happened live on my stream, but I have seen it now, numerous times over and over. The way it works, you wait until the LAST possible second and ready up....and you AUTO get the win.....no matter what your opponent is doing. Here's a clip of it happening live (sorry for the cursing....but I"m sick of it.....)
