    Check out Harstem's YouTube Channel!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:31 PM PST

For anyone who doesn't know, Harstem has been regularly uploading a ton of content to his YouTube channel of late and it's really good stuff. He does detailed build order guides, analyzes pro games, and has a couple of hilarious series:

Is it imba or do I suck? - Harstem analyzes replays and tells you whether you lost because of imba or because you suck. While the understated dry humour is hilarious, you can actually learn from it and he's not harsh which keeps it fun.

Beating Grandmaster with stupid stuff - Pretty self-explanatory, except sometimes it's "Losing to Grandmaster with stupid stuff" instead. The challenges vary a lot and this has delivered some insane games and some nonsense.

I just wanted to recognize the consistent great content that he's been putting out and hopefully let some people know who didn't already

One of the best ways to improve rapidly: Team Leagues

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:05 PM PST

Doesn't matter what team/clan you join, competing in team leagues is going to be one of the best ways for you to learn a build really well and learn a bunch of possible reactions to it then learn reactions to those reactions.

Fully mapping out a build like that is extremely powerful, and you'll have really good players trying to ensure your execution is as bulletproof as possible. And everyone wins if you win, but if you lose you'll still have that support and bonds forged by it.

Competition like that isn't everyone's cup of tea but if it's yours, you really will get a lot out of it, especially if you're between Gold and Masters.

Cure's recent form in online tournaments is incredible

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:42 AM PST

Seems Cure is flying under the radar a bit as not everyone watches online tournaments, but his results are starting to be pretty ridiculous so I draw some attention to them.

Kung Fu cup is the largest prize pool weekly tournament at 400$, and it's held on the Korean server. Because of this the lineups are always full of the best players in Korea. The tournament has now been held four times since it started running again. Of these four tournaments Cure has won three, the only one he didn't win he lost against sOs 2 -1.

So Cure's results in the recent Kung Fu cups according to Liquipedia are:

    Cure 2 - 0 Time

    Cure 2 - 0 Cyan

    Cure 2 - 0 Solar

    Cure 2 - 0 Zest

    Cure 3 - 0 Rogue (KF1 finals)

    Cure 2 - 0 Maru

    Cure 1 - 2 sOs (KF2 ro16)

    Cure 2 - 0 Solar

    Cure 2 - 0 Firefly

    Cure 2 - 0 Super

    Cure 2 - 1 Zest

    Cure 3 - 0 Dream (KF3 finals)

    Cure 2 - 0 Percive

    Cure 2 - 0 Armani

    Cure 2 - 0 Dream

    Cure 2 - 1 Dark

    Cure 3 - 0 Solar (KF1 2020 finals)

Not too shabby. Then there's the other major weekly tournament on Korean server, Olimoleague. Cure has only played in one of those on the current patch. He won that one. His run was:

    Cure 2 - 1 Zoun

    Cure walkover Cyan

    Cure 2 - 0 Armani

    Cure 3 - 0 Dear (Olimoleague #176 finals)

If my math doesn't fail me then the combined map score across the tournaments should be 43 - 5, and 4 out of 5 tournaments won. There's a couple Chinese players and a couple Korean amateurs in there, but that's mostly against the top players in Korea. If he takes even part of this form to the offline events, then there will be interesting times ahead.

How do you counter lurker with bio?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:06 AM PST

I like playing bio Terran a lot with timing attacks, but it becomes fairly useless if the first push doesn't succeed and the Zerg player makes lurkers. Tanks seem to be outmaneuvered easily by the faster lurkers, and liberators are zoned out by hydralisks that a bio ball wouldn't be able to engage in. Lurkers seem to be one of the hardest source of aoe imo, since there are viable micro tricks against bane Lings, storm, colossus, etc. The only way I can deal with lurkers while playing bio is to engage them before they reach critical mass or to catch the Zerg player while they're transitioning.

    General question about kiting

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:18 PM PST

I've always used ''move-command + stop + move-command + stop etc.'' for kiting, but many streamers seem to recommend using ''move-command + a-move + move-command etc.'' instead. Why is that? What is the difference? Thanks for enlighting me.

Create full teams in 2v2,3v3 & 4v4 should use the average MMR of each player for the team instead of forcing them to rank up and face much lower level players

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:06 AM PST

It makes it that master level players and stomping these lower level players in team games which is not good for new players who are just getting into the game to face that, each time these master level players team up they need to do 15+ games to get to a reasonable mmr for their team

Thinking about using the free name change that you get each season. Does anyone know if this will cause any issues with sc2replaystats in terms of it still tracking my replays properly?

[META] Can we please talk about how bad this subreddit treats meme posts?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:28 PM PST

For a really long time, /r/starcraft has had a frankly pretty dumb policy in place in relation to memes.

The relevancy rule, the low effort rule, the context rule (and honestly who knows what else), have all caused posts that the community has already upvoted into popularity to be removed.

These rules have made it much harder to post memes to /r/starcraft than in the vast majority of other subreddits. Instead of taking any given meme template and changing the text to make it into a starcraft joke, users have to photoshop some piece of starcraft imagery into their meme or risk it being taken down. This is something mostly unique to /r/starcraft, and it discourages posting.

It does not discourage 'low effort posting', it discourages all meme posting. Especially from casual users.

Not everyone is aware of this rule because it is so unintuitive compared to the rest of reddit, so many memes have been taken down after reaching the front page, hours after posting.

This meme, for example could well have been headed towards becoming a top post of the month, but it was removed due to the relevancy rule. It doesn't matter that it was up for hours, had hundreds of upvotes, and brought more people to the sub as a result. It was still removed.

Similar memes though, posted in the same time period, seem to receive a free pass with just as much/just as little 'starcraft relevancy'.

Some people might make the argument that this rule saves the subreddit from being flooded with low effort memes that are weak attempts to grab internet points. To that I'd have to ask, does adding protoss warp eyes really add enough to a meme to make it high effort? Or does it generally change nothing about the quality of the meme but more often gatekeep users who don't have the time or knowledge to make such changes to a meme template? not to say that shopping in warp eyes doesn't ever add anything to a meme, it has pushed many ok memes into 'great' territory

Secondly, while it may have been true that in 2011 there were hundreds of users salivating at the idea of reposting a meme they saw on /r/funny onto /r/starcraft for easy larma by changing the title, does anyone seriously beleive that'll be a big problem in 2020 as well? Anyone who was around before 2015 knows that this sub used to have WAY higher post traffic. I think now, any post that gets upvoted should be welcomed by the mods and the community because it means a higher chance of people coming in from /r/all or from their own front page. There's not as much content being posted in general so maybe now is a good time to realize that what worked in 2011 may not apply in 2020.

For an example of why this is important and how effective it can be at keeping a community pumping, I'd like to point to /r/borderlands2. I picked up borderlands 2 earlier last year well before the release or announcement of borderlands 3. When I went online to see what the community was like, I was shocked to see how active that subreddit was, full of popular meme posting that would get hundreds or thousands of upvotes. Posts such as the #2 most popular post of all time, the #7 post of all time, or the #9 post of all time.

Now I'm PRETTY sure that those posts would have all been removed under /r/starcraft's current meme philosophy, but I honestly don't know because its not like we can pretend that the application of these rules has been consistent here (example 1 and example 2, two great posts that made thousands of people laugh despite being pretty low effort and low context).

I generally like the screddit mods. But I really hope they can take a step back and allow more creativity and loosen the rules around posting so that it aligns with the rest of reddit dot com. SC2 is in its tenth year, and it baffles me that anyone would want to see popular starcraft memes removed instead of encouraging posting to draw more attention and drive traffic here.

    TL;DR - free the memes

real tl;dr - the rules/application of the rules in this subreddit do not align with the rest of this website, they do not discourage 'low effort content' and they seem only to drive subreddit traffic down and discourage casual/new users from posting.
