Is watching Vibe's bronze to GM series enough for a new player to learn?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 07:54 AM PST

I have around 6k hours devoted to Dota but hate the way the game is heading in the recent updates.

SC looks fun, but is known to be very difficult. I can't spend the same time I did to learn dota. Obviously, I don't plan on playing competitively, but is just watching the videos enough to learn and slowly get better?

This is a zoomed in pic of a warning on Raynor's armor (I wanna get a tattoo of his pauldron). Any idea what the first 3 words on the 2nd row are? "Caution, the inlet duct and _ __ (port?) adjacent area must be free of all living objects prior to and during engine operation"

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 11:15 AM PST

Would you be interested in a simple app that would log your replays into a spreadsheet(printf style) and also would rename them like this: "TvZ WIN mmr mapname duration.SC2Replay"

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 08:44 AM PST

I searched for such a tool and I couldn't find anything. There are sites like ggtracker, sc2replaystats that let you analyze your replays easily and they provide you alot of useful info. But I couldn't find anything that would let you create your own sc2 database in excel or google spreadsheet. Would anyone be interested for this sort of application? That you run from your machine and in a moment you have all the info organized in excel similar to what Printf has.

    Taldarim stargate oracle bug

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 06:33 PM PST

Currently the stargate with the taldarim skin doesn't show the shape of an oracle producing where it should. Video of it: https://youtu.be/M9W3EKmig8I?t=13.

The oracle isn't shown producing in game or in the replay. It does show the other SG units producing, but not the oracle.

I'm surprised I haven't seen anything about this, it's been bugged a few months now so I thought I'd try to get the word out.

New player here (about a month now), wonder exactly how (and why) you personally define "cheese."

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 04:24 AM PST

At this point I've played about 200 games (I know, noob) against a fair number of different strategies, and I have to say, I haven't really seen any of them as cheesy. We're all playing by the same rules, so anything you can do, I could probably do if I'd thought of it first, right?

What makes a particular strategy cheese?

Is it because your opponent attacked before you were ready? I'm new, but I'm pretty sure that's just having an aggressive strategy.

Is it because you wanted a chance to build a robust economy? You might really enjoy Sim City.

Is it because it goes against the current meta? That's just called "having a strategy." It's a strategy game, in the end. You're supposed to come up with a strategy to beat your opponents, hopefully one they're not expecting. Seems cheese is synonymous with "strategies I wasn't ready for."

You only need 600 APM when your strategy is stale (or if you're GM, but then you're probably not complaining online about cheese). No one likes moldy cheese.

This is just my two cents. For context, 90% of my games have been unranked or AI and I'm mid-silver, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

That's why I'm asking: how do you define cheese?

TL;DR: New (silver league) sc2 player thinks he's great bc he doesn't rage quit when his opponents confront him with a new strategy. Tell him why he's wrong.

    Why no skytoss in PvZ?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 11:48 AM PST

I've been watching the IEM Qualifiers and I'm suprised that we didn't see more Carriers. We had a lot of Carriers in 2018. We've seen some Carriers in 2019, when they always lost to Winfestors. This year, with the Infestor nerf, I was expecting a big Carrier comeback, but there were almost never played (at least in the games I've seen). I'm not complaining, Skytoss is one of the most boring styles to watch, I'm just curious why?
Except from one absolute mad man who cannon rushed every PvZ, and some games with blink Stalkers and Disruptors (which i thoroughly enjoyed) most games were either 2-base all-ins or Zealot/Immortal/Archaon timings. I know that was the only viable style last patch, so that's what they have the most practice with. Obviously it works. It's a very strong unit comp in every matchup. Easy to make, easy to control and has good unit synergy . However, while it dosen't require much micro, it doesn't allow for much micro either. It seems like if the Zerg plays well, there is not much Protoss can do to outplay them with that army.
    Neeb vs Serral spoiler below.

For example in Neeb vs Serral, Neeb went for a pre-Broodlord Archaon/Immortal/Zealot timing and didn't even think about transitioning. When the first attack got held, he just remade the same unit comp (with some HTs) and went for it again. I understand not wanting to play super late game vs Serral, but pushing on creep against banelings seems suicidal. Wouldn't a safer option be to take another base and go into air?

By the way, isn't it funny how the best Protoss ground units vs Banelings are Archaons and Immortals and Zergs choose to counter Archaon/Immortal with mass Banes?

Will AIs like Alpha Star eventually define new metas?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 12:17 PM PST

I don't know too much about Alpha Star's development. Last I saw, it's mostly winning through exceptional macro. But I've seen it make some interesting plays that worked better than I expected.

Fast-forward a few years, and what do you think the state of StarCraft AIs will be? Will they ever outpace pro players when it comes to developing new strategies and meta games?

    SC2 matcherino support.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 10:20 AM PST

So, i remember not long ago some hero on this subreddit posted the matcherino support links and passwords for the last several pylon show. I could immediately donate them 5-6 bucks for free, just by typing in the code. I imagine we gathered a huge sum because of that post.

So i wonder what it takes to collect these matcherino links with the codes to most of the freely supportable sc2 tourneys, and maybe post them weekly. I dont know how this works, and i admit i wouldn't and couldn't do it, but imagine if someone actually listed it regularly we could make so much money for the scene.
