    Stukov redesign

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:14 PM PDT

I think Stukov has a few design flaws. I will try to change him to be more infested terran, and less zerg. Just for fun. A look at what could/should have been.

For starters I think Stukov shouldn't have Overlords. What does an Overlord do? They control zerg. But infested terrans arent just zerg, and they are Stukov's forces separate from the swarm. I don't think they fit thematically, and they definitely dont fit mechanically.

An Overlord can make creep, which no one ever does, and we don't need. Since the CC makes infinite spreading creep. And they can become Overseers. Later we get the flying Brood Queens. They have super unique and cool abilities. But why bother building one if you can have Overseers? The Overseer cheapens the special detector. And the Queen's abilities aren't mechanically good enough to warrant not building Overseers.

What would I have instead? Infested supply depots. In a mutation mission in HotS there are infestex depots, so the model exists. Further change to this: what happens in every campaign mission with infested terrans? They come out of buildings!

Instead of the Colonist Compound I would have all your buildings spawn Infested. So it scales up with your production. The more supply depots you have, the more infested you produce. Make it a top bar ability that gets stronger the longer you leave it, like Mengsk' zerg ability. This is more thematic, and it's cool. It let's you pull a hail mary and launch a wave. Gives you some control over it too. We could even have it where the if you let it build up, and you have enough of the right buildings, it can spawn a variety of guys. Like Aberrations, and Marines, instead of just Civilians. Too often when I play Stukov I can sit around and let my auto timed units win for me. We can keep the Colonist Compound for upgrades, like Karax' Solar Forge. But spawn the actual infested from Depots.

More units would be nice too. The mech are too expensive base to be used much. They are all super cool and unique, just expensive, and not enough. Some infested Battle Cruisers, or something would be cool. Or more types of infested infantry. Kind of a dark reflection of Raynor type idea. Give me an infested Science Vessel that can eat ground forces for energy. I feel like that is way more Infested Terran than the straight up zerg unit of the Brood Queen. Get creative with it. 4 out of the 6 units we get are creative. Give me more of that. Give me infested Firebats that spray acid instead of fire. Cool shit like that.

In summation: Stukov should operate more like the infested terrans you face in missions. Spawn units out of supply buildings, and with more variety of units. Give the wave spawn control to the player. And drop the overlords.

I want to feel like I'm strategically unleashing my infested to support my varied army. Instead of building 8 barracks so when my wave of Civilians drops I can build 150 supply of marines and walk them across the map.

I want to be supported by my infested, instead the other way around. It feels very passive. You are waiting for your next batch of civvies to walk across the map. Instead of being proactive and building a real permanent army.

    Has AlphaStar ever been "unleased"?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 02:48 PM PDT

I understand that over the course of development they nerfed alphastar to simulate human vision (i.e. minimap/camera view) and further limited the APM before changing it to APS since the bot would "bank" actions and use them in bursts. Also, afaik, alphastar practices against itself a few million times with these limitations.

In other competitive gaming fields like speedrunning, it is common to create a TAS (or Tool Assisted Speedrun) frame by frame to develop new, faster strategies. I feel like Alphastar could do the same for starcraft.

What I'm wondering is what Alphastar can do with limited human vision but infinite APM. The saying goes that there is no "perfect game of Starcraft" (and with incomplete information that would hold true no matter how fast the player is), but has alphastar developed new build orders? Could seeing what's imaginable help people understand what's possible?
