Co-Op Mutation #229: Hello My Old Friend

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:15 AM PDT

The vortex of swirling energies around the Void Slivers eat away at anything that isn't in a building, and jams your reconnaisance systems. When hybrid die, they explode in an enormous blast that disables all your weapons. Only destroying the slivers will restore order to the area.

    Map: Scythe of Amon

    Black Death
Some enemy units carry a plague that deals damage over time and spreads to other nearby units. The plague spreads to your units when the enemy unit is killed.
    Darkness
Previously explored areas remain blacked out on the minimap while outside of player vision.
    Moment of Silence
When a Heroic enemy unit dies all player units around it will reflect on their sins, unable to attack or use their abilities.

    Rating: Brutal +4

    Video Replays on Brutal:

    Player 1                                   Player 2
    [CtG (Zeratul)] Ancalagon (Vorazun)
    [CtG (Swann)] Ancalagon (Stetmann)
    [CtG (Stukov)] Ancalagon (Zagara)
    [CtG (Arcturus)] Galle (Raynor)

    Notes:

    • Any enemy unit has 33% to carry black death on Brutal.
    • Players units that carry this plague will lose 2% of their max HP per second on Brutal until they die.
    • When any infected unit dies [player's or Amon's], it will spread to 3 random players' units within 5 range.
    • Stukov's Bunkers, Karax's Repair Beam, 100-biomass Abathur units, and being in Kerrigan's Omega Worms all out-heal the plague.
    • Stetmann's green zone can outheal the Black Plague for a lot of the units with Stetzone bonuses mastery.
    • Moment of Silence [has 8 range]. Units affected can move, but not attack.
    • Buildings are IMMUNE to Moment of Silence.
    • The Void Sliver locations are visible through the darkness, but attack waves are not.

If you understand Korean, you're missing out by not tuning into GSL Korean casters.

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:38 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I'm not downplaying the US casters. Tastosis are an amazing duo. Their passion, knowledge and sense of humor are incredible. With that out of the way...

When you listen to the GSL Korean casters, you learn a ton about the game. They analyze the game on multiple levels: the state of the match, its relationship with the metagame, and even the history of SC. Things that only a dedicated long-term player would know.

For example, during Zoun vs Soo, the casters commented on how the disruptors were using nova immediately after exiting the warp prism--almost as though Zoun had manually hotkeyed each disruptor. That how exceptional it was, as even pros rarely use more than 3-4 army hotkeys. They also discussed a similar technique in Brood War called 'Shooting Reavers'--a trick that was briefly popular during the early days of the game before it was snuffed in patch 1.04.

Another example: in Zoun vs Innovation, where the Protoss went Phoenix into Colossus. The casters pointed out that this strategy once earned Dear his 23-0 PvT winstreak. That it was specifically designed to work with a 2-base econ against a 2-base Terran, because gateway units cannot trade efficiently with Terran bio in a 2 base vs 2 base situation. They hypothesized that Zoun chose this strategy because the map made it difficult for him to take the third (also Zoun was crushed when he attempted a conventional macro game against Inno, so he knew he had to be unconventional).

Notably, the casters are on friendly terms with the Korean pros. They often pick up juicy bits from the players, including personal drama, opinions about other players, and the state of the game. This is what pushes the GSL commentary into an engaging experience. They're the ones who make fans come back for more.

Obviously, having one more person helps, including TY, an actual top-level Terran pro. I'd also like to mention Young-jae Hwang(황영재), a talented analyst who often dives into the players' minds and predicts their moves.

Reynor wins 4 to 3 against Clem in a very close finals.

It was a rematch of the upper bracket finals in which Clem won 3 to 2.

GG wp to both, very nice games played.

Reynor continues to show his strength, Clem also reveals that he really improved on his already formidable skills by achieving a top 2 finish (but I'm still sad that he didn't become the champion).

Chat filter during Scarlett ESL games is ridiculous

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:11 PM PDT

I was just given an hour chat ban for this following message:

"Astrea should have gone for an air transition while Scarlet was maxed on lurkers, and he had a 3k 3k bank"

This was while I was debating the first two losses with some others in chat. I was timed out, and the reason given was "Chat is not the place for gender discussions"

What was even wrong with what I said? I genuinely can't tell. I understand that there are always assholes in the chat during Nina and Scarlett games, but I imagine that a lot of users are getting banned for no reason if this was what got me.

What was the point of un-infesting Kerrigan?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 08:22 PM PDT

At the end of Wings of Liberty, Raynor un-infests Kerrigan, but in Heart of the Swarm she is still able to control the Zerg, still has evil/power-hungry tendencies, and then flat out reinfests herself. I don't understand, what was the point of getting rid of Kerrigan's infested status if she just became the same person again in the Zerg campaign? What made the Queen of Blades and Heart of the Swarm Kerrigan different? Why couldn't they just leave Kerrigan as Queen of Blades and let her take on Amon once she had all the artifacts?

People have been helping me in this game for a decade, so I want to pay it forward and help people make it to at least diamond 3.

If you're below that rank and you want to get better, post here or message me and we'll get you there.

Do you watch Starcraft matches even when your race isn't being played?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 12:58 PM PDT

I ask this because I feel like I encounter a lot of people who straight up don't watch Starcraft if their race isn't involved, especially higher level players. So I'm curious to poll this. Do you watch Starcraft matches even when your race isn't being played? (the answer that fits your situation the most)
