[Liquipedia Request] Info field saying if players have completed their military service

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:38 PM PDT

As I am getting more into watch interviews with players and streams with players, I come to wonder more often if many have completed their military service, and if they are currently planning on it.

I don't know much of anything when it comes to editing Liquipedia entries, but would it be a good idea if there was a field under the player info pane on the right side of their page having their military service status?

I think it would be helpful and easy to edit with descriptions of if they have completed it, if they have not completed it, or if they are planning on starting at some certain time. What do you guys think?

    Returning back to Starcraft

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:10 AM PDT

Disclaimer: This is just a boring post about my recent experience in gaming, and I just really wanna express my love for Starcraft.

So I've been serving National Service, which for those who don't know is basically 2 years of army life to prepare a reserve army in case of wartime. Anyways, army life for an ordinary dude is pretty shitty, and there's nothing quite like spending weekend leave gaming and de-stressing.

Except my weekend leave was exactly opposite of that. I play tons of Dota, and losing 70% of games to bad teammates just affected my mood and emotional health, pushed me to play even more to try and earn back lost MMR and climb ladder. It was seriously frustrating though, because nearly every game felt like I had to fight with one hand behind my back in the form of bad teammates. I'm not saying they were the cause of every loss, some games were legitmately lost by my own folly, but it just triggered me when I felt like I had to play perfect to make up for inadequate allies. It was a really unhealthy gaming experience is what I'm getting at.

So I decided why not just hop on back to 1v1 Starcraft

And it feels GOOD to be the master of your own fate. Every loss just feels bitter sweet because you learned something, gained more experience and just get better and better regardless. The game's balance is good (I mean not perfect but it's honestly pretty good), the significant challenge yields the most awesome feeling of satisfaction when you see that victory screen, and the game's depth and high skill cap just leaves you thinking, and thinking, and thinking about your next move.

In Starcraft, there's always SOMETHING to work to be better at, and there's a little bit of something for your mood everytime. Feel like you just wanna chill and watch things blow up? Co-op. Want to get a little kick of a challenge? Brutation. Feeling up for something a little unique and cool? Arcade. The campaigns are pretty fun too, with a nice detachment for the standard competitive Starcraft to explore some little progression systems and SICK cinematics to watch.

And holy shit I love it when my hands just fly across the keyboard. When your APM starts ramping up, you just feel like the fastest thing alive. When the game gets more and more intense, you've got that adrenaline rush that'll pump through your system. Plus, there are just so many (somewhat?) viable strategies you can use, with room for a little personal flair to the gameplay. Every bit of Starcraft is a breath of fresh air that yields some very important peace that's becoming increasingly scarce in today's strange times. A real pleasure compared to the stressful team games that have so much more juggling to do, and where your fate is not in your own hands.

Starcraft is just awesome, what else is there to say?

Hello, new player here. Does playing against the A.I. help me improve? Or will it make me form bad habits?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 11:11 PM PDT

Hello, I'm new into the game. I've only been playing coop with a friend for a while now but I want to actually compete with other players. I've read various guides and such, so now I have a general focus on hotkeys and macromanagement for now until I get comfortable.

I've been doing this against the A.I. and had come to hard difficulty but in the back of my mind, there is something telling me to do train this against players.

In most games I've played, playing against a bot forms bad habits and slows improvement significantly, and majority of the playerbase of those games agreed that playing against a player is more benificial for improvement.

Is Starcraft the same? That playing against players gives more improvement? Or is it safe to play against A.I.?

Do you think it's possible to improve after years of plateau?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I was playing last night and was thinking that I've been around the same level for at least 3 years now. The max MMR I ever achieved was close to 5100 when I used to play a lot. Lately, after having a child and not putting in the hours, I hover around 4650 - 4850 MMR.

I wonder at this point if it's even possible to ever improve anymore or to achieve GM at least for one season. Would focused practice sessions vs players or AI help me? For example, doing drills like worker pull drills, macro drills, micro drills, etc.?

One thing I began last night which I think I will continue for a while is to play completely opposite of what I usually do. For example, I am typically very defensive in all match-ups. In TvT, for example, I'll typically rally my first few units on the ramp to catch aggressive opponents. Last night, I sent my first Reaper aggressively and rallied my units to their base. Now, it didn't work out too well overall, but I think it's worth practicing different playstyles. My theory is that maybe doing this will improve my early game micro a bit since my early game macro is nearly perfect as it stands.

What do you guys think? Can one get better after years of plateau? Also, what do you think would be the best way to improve if it's possible? Drills, focused practice, different playstyles, or maybe learn new builds? Would love to hear other's thoughts.
