Am I the only person that likes watching PvP more than anything else? Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:17 AM PDT I see people here say fairly frequently that PvP is the worst matchup viewer wise and it seems to be pretty popular as an opinion. Maybe I've just seen that recently and just wrong tho. But personally(obviously with bias as a P player who enjoys PvP) I find PvP the most entertaining to watch by far. It probably comes quite a bit from actually understanding what's happening more, and just the fact that I like the relationship protoss units have with eachother in the Rock, paper, scissors kinda way. I always love seeing the proxy's and skirmishes and lasers always make the game better to see. submitted by /u/wideshapiro [link] [comments] |

GSL Code S 2020 S2 | Ro24 | Group F | Rundown Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT There are many people who live for the weekends - what absolute fools, don't they know the GSL is also live on Wednesdays. Group F: - Dark Horses with consistent performances and even more impressive peaks: Trap, RagnaroK
- Underdog Supreme aka the Terran upset machine: Bunny
- Enemy Unknown, the returning Protoss trickster: Patience
The expectation heading into today was pretty straightforward, the duo of Trap and RagnaroK would smash their way through the Group handily with Bunny stealing a map or two along the way to keep his image up of always having a puncher's chance and also Patience would likely do his best to confuse the hell out of us with questionable plays you can't look away from along with bizarre builds that may or may not work as usual. Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously Instead, it was Bunny who overcame both of his higher ranked opponents in pretty convincing series to earn 1st for himself and make back to back Ro16s accordingly, distinguishing this as a much different year for him in the process. In the wake of those consecutive upsets, it was then time for the two favorites of the Group to decide the runner up between themselves, ultimately ending in an extremely one-sided series where Trap handily secured 2nd. M1 | Trap [ 2 : 1 ] Patience | ★★★☆☆ | Solving Puzzles - Ever Dream | PvP time typically means proxy o'clock and the weapon of choice for Trap was a Robo, giving him an Immortal and Warp Prism to play around with on the other side of the map. Patience, on the other hand, surprisingly decided to basically take a blind Nexus instead of shenanigans and that pretty much concluded the build order loss, with the Jin Air Protoss player's attack hitting as early as 03:45 allowing him to utterly decimate his way to victory.
- Eternal Empire | To mix things up Trap then put down a proxy Stargate and when Patience went for another Nexus you could have convinced me we were in for the same outcome. Impressively, the underdog not only held off the Jin Air onslaught but genuinely showed immaculate defense and the desire to go into an even longer game, taking the third Nexus ahead of his opponent as well. From there Trap started stacking Immortals while Patience went into Disruptors with Blink support and perhaps because of some shaky plays by him on the offense the Jin Air Protoss decided to transition into a mirrored composition, almost as if to prove he could beat him with his own toys. Unfortunately for him, Patience just kept massing Disruptors and expanding like a madman & when it came time for the huge engagements he won the majority of them, most notably at 15:25 when he took a commanding supply lead and even gave Trap a taste of his own medicine with devastating DT harassment, eventually choking him out of the game in truly impressive fashion.
- Ice And Chrome | When we saw Patience screw up his opponent's mineral line with a random Pylon and then even spotted the proxy Robo from Trap so far ahead of schedule it was shut down cold, it felt like the writing was on the wall for the upset. To the Jin Air Protoss player's credit, his crisis management was completely on point, taking an immediate Nexus at home which funnily enough was way ahead of Patience's own conservative followup. From there it also didn't help the underdog when a classic miscalculation resulted in him losing a Prism and having to recall a pair of Immortals back home, however the key moment of the series ended up being Trap's decision to add in Phoenixes while his opponent once again wanted to go into Disruptor wars, which would be his undoing around 12:10 when the Jin Air Protoss not only picked off the fourth Nexus but then also picked up virtually every Robo unit, allowing Trap's Immortals to absolutely shred everything left on the ground for the win.
M2 | RagnaroK [ 1 : 2 ] Bunny | ★★★☆☆ | Patience - Golden Wall | The entire opening map became warped by RagnaroK's decision to hang back and go with the two base Spire build, while Bunny played as standard as possible and prepared for the telegraphed harassment. When the Mutalisks eventually did come out and started causing some problems, it was pretty easy to forget the Terran was even or at times ahead in terms of economy for the majority of the clash here. The patience Bunny showed around 07:50 and willingness to just pivot his lead to a longer game instead of pulling the trigger perfectly fed into his followup assault at roughly 09:50 when he took out the Spawning Pool and 13 Drones with it & the final blow coming not much later than 11:45 at which point a deadly drop coupled with an army at the front that looked indomitable made this one feel all but over even before the last engage.
- Deathaura | When you're forced to cancel both Barracks as early as 01:05 it's pretty hard to come out victorious despite the winrate of this strategy, even more so when you go for the pretty yolo third CC while also being greedy with a Viking, making Rag's aggressive punish to just mass units and go for the game-winner at that point virtually unstoppable.
- Eternal Empire | Although it looked like we would be in for a bit of a repeat on the next map in terms of RagnaroK's aggression early, the Roaches our Zerg went for here were just meant to pressure and seeing as the Terran had a Liberator and two Bunkers at home with a Tank on the way this time no real damage was taken on his end. From there some pretty weak creep spread allowed Bunny to attempt a flimsy push on the fourth Hatch, however when he figured out RagnaroK was preparing to swarm him with Ravager Ling Bane he packed his bags and went home to brace for impact. At around 10:10, as soon as all the Terran forces were forced back home, the Zerg collapsed everything he had against his opponent's entrenched position and after some atrocious control - which basically made it feel like RagnaroK couldn't decide whether to go for econ damage or the kill - Bunny was essentially given a lifeline back into the game, resulting in a push a few minutes later where the fourth and fifth Hatcheries got taken out, which was definitely not good news for the broke Zerg commander and even a few useful counter attacks coupled with a pretty high Drone count couldn't really stop the Terran army from marching to victory as RagnaroK struggled to sprinkle in some Hive units to stabilize only to be completely rolled over through what looked like momentum alone.
M3 | Trap [ 1 : 2 ] Bunny | ★★★☆☆ | Rolling With The Punches - Deathaura | The early Adept pressure, catching a Mine drop in the middle of nowhere and shutting it down cold & finally Blink Stalkers diving into an essentially undefended base not even five minutes into the game all made it feel like this one was already over. Bunny did what he could to get back into things, including a pretty successful drop which managed to sneak in some damage, while eating Warp Prism harass himself back at home, however the most interesting moment occurred as soon as the Terran tried landing his third CC, when it felt like a switch just triggered inside Trap's head and he went for the throat accordingly, which started off with him losing his Prism randomly to a Mine and from there Bunny was free to focus on the frontal assault completely, making the botched attack at 09:20 look borderline insane, especially with the Terran's out of nowhere Ghosts chasing down the retreating forces and showering them with EMPs, resulting in Bunny spiking up in supply. Just as we thought this was done, though, a fresh new Warp Prism arrived bearing
gifts Zealots that not only devastated the Terran's worker count, they also forced him to turn around from his would-be-winning push and delayed it to the point Trap was allowed enough time to both mix in Robo Bay units and overall completely shift the supply in his favor, putting Bunny in a lose-lose scenario and pulling off the steal here after stumbling so uncharacteristically hard in the middle. - Eternal Empire | The decision from the Terran to then go with a relatively fast two Tank push and siege a pretty cool position as early as 05:00 felt fine enough and was executed well, however Trap's great crisis management once again came into play and even though he had to lose his Robo everything was cleaned up in a timely manner, allowing him to take the decisive lead for the second time this series. The compulsion to throw from the Protoss ended up repeating here, however, so at around 08:00 after a Gateway-centered push tried walking into sieged Tanks with regrettable results an over 40 supply swing in Bunny's favor made it feel like an almost exact repeat of circumstances so as DTs started flooding into the Terran's bases and killing off his economy you should have been genuinely worried the game was about to be counter-thrown again, thankfully for everyone's sanity Bunny did pull things together in time to leverage his untouchable army size to take us into the final map of the series.
- Golden Wall | The comparatively calm opener from both players here made it feel like we would be in for a longer one and the Phoenix play from Trap that shut down a Mine drop before it even really left the base along with some harassment after that from the Protoss looked like it would completely contain the Terran for a while, except for the fact Bunny managed to sneak out two full Medivacs of Marines and then unload them inside this opponent's empty main at roughly 06:00 so with the power of Stim one Probe too many and the entire fleet hurrying back to defend bit the dust together, giving the Terran an insurmountable lead he never let go of, smothering his opponent with a quick followup attack that took out the third Nexus and from there it was just an unsolvable army supply math problem unfolding before our eyes as the underdog secured his second upset of the day.
M4 | RagnaroK [ 2 : 0 ] Patience | ★☆☆☆☆ | End Of The Road - Ice And Chrome | The coined "DRG Ling Flood" arrived at 03:40 to find Patience's defense a lot more solid than anticipated, causing a bit of a problem in terms of followup for the Zerg when the dreaded Glaives Adepts arrived and started causing pain, however the choice to go for double Stargate Phoenix from there felt more than a little odd, seeing as RagnaroK was getting pummeled into desperation on the other side of the map, resulting in a hail Mary Nydus attempt where the only Worm got spotted just a little too late, so around 07:25 Queens and Roaches spilled out to buy the Zerg more than enough time to get his own economy back online and beat the Protoss opponent over the head with it.
- Ever Dream | The highly anticipated Glaives o'clock train arrived uninterrupted this time, but once again Patience put down the two Stargates behind it, possibly hoping for his opponent to tech up in order to open a potential window for the Phoenixes to pull off some sort of punish. Instead of doing anything complicated like that though, Rag just massed up low tier units and swarmed the map with Ravagers and Lings, killing a Nexus and 13+ Probes at about 06:45 and following up that crippling attack with a very basic & at that point unstoppable Hydra Queen comp, delivered once again via Nydus transport.
M5 | RagnaroK [ 0 : 2 ] Trap | ★★☆☆☆ | How The Turn Tables - Ever Dream | Let it be known no one beats Glaives three games in a row, although admittedly Trap did a commendable job keeping his opponent busy instead of really committing to the harass, which in hindsight made perfect sense as he built up a squad of Immortals and Sentries behind the contain and decided to end the game as opposed to expanding, kicking off a siege with his combined forces at roughly 07:00 which lasted a minute or so before the Protoss broke his low econ outgunned opponent.
- Ice And Chrome | When we saw the Stargate opener I had to make sure it was still 2020, needless to say as the Oracle duo proceeded to do fuck all on the map I was reassured it was still present date. Trap then went for a basic followup of massing Blink Stalkers with Colossi as his sprinkled in tech of choice, which made RagnaroK's decision to go for Mutalisks simply mind blowing. The consistent pressure from the Protoss throughout this map in no small part thanks to that, resulting in killing off the fourth base twice even if it did cost him a lot of his Sentries the second time, forced the Zerg's hand to try ending this one early, which wasn't pretty around 10:45 when we had to watch Banes and Ravagers try to work their way through perfectly placed Force Fields while eating Colossi lasers and being danced around by Blinking machines of mass destruction, further snowballing Trap's comp lead completely out of control and allowing him to simply walk across the map to end RagnaroK as you would expect from there after a solid conservative game from the Protoss.
A bit of a roller-coaster today, but in the end it felt like the better players made it out so that's nice. - Match of the Night - I'm going with a match which in terms of quality wasn't as great but when it came to excitement and showing off how important fundamentals are, it feels like a must watch i.e. the M3 showdown between Trap and Bunny had some truly mind boggling mistakes in it, but I still think it's the one to see because it basically could have gone 3-0 in either direction with just the tinniest of adjustments by each respective player.
Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player: - Bunny really showed some serious improvement tonight, especially in terms of his patience and overall macro, which is funny because in the end a bit of his old self was required to close things out. I'm still pretty impressed with how he took the fight to the presumably superior players in the Group and I genuinely think he looked better than we've seen him be in previous Seasons, exciting premise heading into the Ro16.
- Trap could have convinced you nothing was wrong if you only decided to take into account selective maps from the mirror and that final dumpster of a series versus the Zerg, but make no mistake something was definitely off with him tonight with the PvT catastrophe being the prime evidence. I hope the lapses in judgement we saw from the Jin Air Protoss here will end up as just a blip on the radar, since it feels like now more than ever we need him to take his rightful spot at the top and lead from there with how many Protoss players we've already lost to the dreaded mandatory military service.
- RagnaroK should really thank Patience for taking some of the heat off him, considering tonight he didn't play a single match he was supposed to lose and lost the majority of them all the same. We saw some atrocious control from the Zerg in the opening match, then it was a lucky break that allowed him to take the lead in the losers' match and his opponent's questionable build to finish that one off, only for Rag to fall in truly unremarkable fashion against Trap in his opponent's historically shakiest matchup (in addition to having dominated him this year specifically). Beyond underwhelming showing here from RagnaroK, this Group was really his for the taking.
- Patience didn't get too many chances to do his thing tonight and even got slightly unfortunate circumstances at times, that said it kind of never feels like a surprise when he gets knocked out - or even when he upsets the best players in the world, really - because he's definitely become one of the most impossible players to evaluate over the course of his career, since even as you're watching him play you still have no idea whether he's going to win or lose until the very end which is certainly what makes him a pretty compelling player to follow when you think about it.
As always, if you think differently or have something interesting to add, feel free to do so in the comments below. Catch you on Wednesday next week for the start of the Ro16 with TY's Group of Life, where one of the lucky contestants SpeCial, Scarlett or DRG will be joining the reigning Code S Champion in moving on to the Playoffs.
