Artosis was wildly wrong on yesterday's cast: Black belts were among the best classes in Final Fantasy 1.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:35 PM PDT

Starting roughly here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEJjWXK6fL8&t=50m30s, artosis and tasteless discuss character classes in rpg's, and specifically final fantasy one classes, calling both the thief and black belt useless.

They're half right - thief was pretty useless. But the blackbelt is arguably one of the strongest classes in the game (the other class which is close is fighter), and is hands down the strongest class in the game if you are willing to level them up a bit above the level that's strictly required to beat the area you are facing.

The reason for this is that a black belt's attack stat, with fists, is equal to their level. They gain additional attacks based on their level as well (I think it's every 8 levels they get +2 attacks), which is faster than all other classes except tied for fighters. The same thing happens with their absorb (ie, armor), although this is considered a bug as if you equip armor on them, the effect is lost and does not come back when you remove the armor (you have to gain a level to get it back).

Artosis seems to be confused because he apparently equipped them with nunchucks, which are nearly useless and shouldn't be used terribly much. Caveat: because fist attack damage is based on level, at level 1 it's terribly weak, so you can equip nunchucks to hit slightly harder at level 1/2. You should remove them somewhere around level 5; but it's also quite viable to simply use fists from level 1 (while your hits are weaker, you can still kill enemies and level up, which will rapidly raise your damage).

Fighters keep up in damage throughout the course of the game as their weapons raise their damage, but if you get a few extra levels BB's will dramatically outpace them starting around level 32 (Typical end game levels are around 27-30, and getting another 2 levels should take less than 45 minutes).

Black belts can one-shot the final boss if you give them Fast (requires a black mage), or just two shot the boss by themselves. I have done this personally and there's a let's play of it online; I argued for the 4 blackbelt party and I have a let's play which finishes the game with 4 black belts (I never evolved them into masters; there's almost no benefit), and includes a 2-hit kill on chaos.

The Dark Side of NA GM: Rank 10 [AoBDE]Dessel is Actually Boosted by PiLiPiLi

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:27 AM PDT

Now normally, boosting happens in GM all the time when certain types of people want to trick others into believing that they are good at the game. I wouldn't care, but for this account in particular, the user actually boasted on reddit about his achievements, when in reality he just got somebody else to play on his account. Because of that post, as a Reddit Detective I have received numerous requests from GM players to out this guy, so here it is.

    Link to hotkey analysis

The top image shows the hotkeys played on PiLiPiLi's main account, while the bottom shows [AoBDE]Dessel. Note that both have the exact same main hotkeys, with Nexus on 3, production on 2, and main army on 1. However, there is an additional quirk with PiLiPiLi's play that I believe no other player does. When he moves out with his scouting probe at around the 1:00 mark, he binds it to keys 1, 4, and 6, which is done every game. He also sometimes binds all the unused hotkeys to the main Nexus at this time (shown in both these games), then does not press those hotkeys for the rest of the game. Based on this, there's no conclusion other than that it was PiLiPiLi playing on that account.

    Link to replays

    PiLiPiLi: http://sc2replaystats.com/replay/15577021

    [AoDBE]Dessel: http://sc2replaystats.com/replay/15488422

So, why were so many GMs annoyed by Dessel's reddit post? Well, in that post, he was basically claiming to have gotten that rank in "just over a year" with only 11k games played. Anybody who is actually in GM knows how impossible that is - you would basically have to be a young Flash to progress that quickly, and even then I don't know if it's possible. For reference, I would estimate that PiLiPiLi, a player who is actually good enough to achieve that rank, has played more than 50k games. So, it's annoying to see someone take an extremely difficult achievement and marginalize it with a fake post, essentially claiming himself to be a prodigy.

Just a short appreciation thread. They're both super chill and have mad caster synergy. Perfect blend of analysis, player knoweldge, charisma, humor and super dumb analogies. And two of the most consistent content creators in the scene right now. Really enjoying their collaborations
