We heard your feedback - Updates to ESL Pro Tour / DH SC2 Masters

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Hi everyone, a little while ago we posted about looking for some thoughts from the community on our most recent ESL Pro Tour event, the DreamHack SC2 Masters: Summer.

We collected items submitted through that form, twitter, and in conversations and wanted to write up our thoughts on the more commonly brought up items. On some portions we are looking to make adjustments to following seasons to improve everyone's experience, and on others we don't believe it's as likely we will make a change but wanted to bring up our thoughts as to why and how. We go over some basics like viewing experience, scheduling, and format, and also updated on some more detailed topics like the changes to prize payout structure for the seasons with less qualifiers than Summer.

All in all we're happy with this process and believe strongly in continuing to work with the players and community, we want this to be the best it can be and think this open communication can help us all. We feel like this start has been a successful start to our new revamped circuit and want to keep everyone updated with progress and how we feel on it going forward!

You can find our detailed newspost here.

Was that the most one sided GSL round of 8 ever?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:41 AM PDT

    Massive spoiler warning obviously.

Three of the 4 sets were 3-0's and Parting lost 3-1 in a series that also wasn't particularly close. And the 3-0's weren't the rare tight 3-0's you occasionally see, they were straight up beat-downs (even Innovation vs DongRaeGu). I really can't remember another round of 8 that was anywhere near this on sided, there seemed to be a huge skill gap between the top 8 and the top 4.

It would be awesome if both players could agree to a bo3 on ladder after the game, like SFV does.

    Terran Theme Analysis

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:13 AM PDT

Some thoughts. But I have more. I don't think people will understand what I am trying to convey. The first Terran theme is a musical metaphor for Raynor's story and his emotions.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD4GbGmvNRc

The song begins as a sort of awakening.

Something very interesting actually... it doesn't seem deliberate (well... even though there were references to the film in the game, several). But there is a sort of filter sweep sound at the beginning. It's like the helicopters at the start of Apocalypse Now, where Willard is drugged/drunk/depressed etc. And, he's asleep... then he dreams of helicopters and wakes up.

0:35 The most famous part with the key change has a sound that's interesting. After the melody is repeated once per key, there is a more... despairing or sad sound in the ending chords/notes. It represents the duality of the Rebel Yell campaign, successful, making progress, but then... in the end, futile.

But overall it represents where Raynor's life is picking up again and changes are happening.

1:03 This part is not as bluesy or pentatonic in sound. It's more diatonic, i.e... more emotional, not as 'badass'. More tender. It might be a stretch but it represents the companionship in the Sons of Korhal... the war is almost ended and hopes are high. But it also sounds... bittersweet. Then...

1:40 The part after it with the vocals at 1:40. It's interesting, very repetitive melodically. It uses a tritone. It seems dreamy... a bit drunk in a way. It represents the end of Raynor's hopes. Now the Sons of Korhal have turned out worse that the Confederacy... things are worse.

2:22 Things are not as dream like as the previous passage. The synth vocals are gone and harder instrumentation is more prominent.

3:05 A passage like Pinball Wizard from the Who. Represents... boredom, mediocrity. Suspended chords. Not much is happening. The interbellum between StarCraft 1 and 2.

4:11 The song ends where it began. Jim is depressed, inactive. Just like when he began StarCraft one, mourning Lidya, on a backwater. In comparison to the intro it's much more downbeat, despite the same notes. It could also mean something more -- that a new chapter is about to begin, and the cycle repeats [because the intro is not downbeat composition wise]. And it does -- Raynor's depression and dreaminess and nightmares lead into StarCraft II...

Also, it could represent the end of Raynor's journey reuniting with Kerrigan.

What do you think? My post seems a bit confusing but I just wanted to write my ideas without procrastinating.
