    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 04:07 PM PDT

I've just finished my lastest project. Kerrigan Covert Ops is a modification of the Nova missions. In this version, you play as Kerrigan and her swarm. It features multiple difficulties, a choosing system for Kerrigan and her army, and dialogues and music from the Heart of the Swarm campaign. It's free to play on the Arcade right now!

    Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjaBRmIy2z8

These maps take a lot of time and effort to make so if you'd be willing to support me on Patreon, you have my thanks. Plus, you get exclusive updates on my progress and you'll know in advance when I'm about to publish a new campaign.

Follow up: An analysis of "Reaper Dances" in GSL - Statistics and Facts

As a follow up to the video I posted a few days ago here are some (hopefully) interesting stats I found during my "research".

If you don't wanna read everything I encourage you just to look at the diagrams, which should be enough to understand most things.

Before starting I'd like to enable you to see my source so the facts I present can actually be checked. This document is the basis for pretty much everything you'll see. It looks a bit weird bc it has originally been a word document (hope u don't mind it too much :) ). Another quick disclaimer: This version now contains the new GSL matches of Ro.16 Group A. So the stats may vary a little from some of my answers below the video's post.

    https://preview.redd.it/9qfam88qyfb51.png?width=1070&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae04fe0bc544dcdf6c2d7b33f98361138ca7d61f

Damage is defined as Zergling kills, Drone kills or Drones forced to morph into a Spore or an Extractor.

I'm now gonna explain and expand on the table. It sort of summarizes the entire document. The only thing that's left out in it is the stats of players in "Reaper Dances". I'll talk about them later on.

    The Occurrence of TvZs

Statistically, the Matchup of TvZ or ZvT has a 2/9 chance of occurring or 22.2%. So having a rate of 21.3% is a slight underrepresentation, but it's pretty close considering the small sample size of only a few hundred games.

    https://preview.redd.it/xhw6m9kuyfb51.png?width=886&format=png&auto=webp&s=1f4fb41f2921353df8bd82b76f4ad096a5bc6891

    Reaper Dances

In 62.1% of TvZs "Reaper dances" happened, as expected to make it the most common strategy in TvZ early-game. The main reasons for them not happening I noticed while watching the VODs are Marine first openings, proxies and the reaper just staying at home for some time. The latter happened really often in 2019 GSL S1 explaining the relatively low rate of reaper dances at 41.9%. The reaper almost never stays at home during GSL in today's meta.

One point to notice in general is that the Super tournaments' stats seem to be a bit odd. But this is just because they only feature a small proportion of games and so can vary more easily. One should always try to look at the bigger picture.

    https://preview.redd.it/9d6dznzyyfb51.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=764a177e42b3d21cfd31cf55f73587297e8ba99b

    Damage

So you may already have noticed the elephant in the room, which is located in the bottom right corner. In 56.8% of all "Reaper Dances" damage is done to the Zerg. This completely contradicts the usual narrative of the always same engagements where nothing happens.

One could argue that a forced morph is no real damage, but even if you subtract them from damage you still end up at 43.4% which is still so much higher than my initial expectation. Listening to Tastetosis's casting I honestly would have expected something well below 20 probably even 10%.

    https://preview.redd.it/jj7wpew1zfb51.png?width=854&format=png&auto=webp&s=43862f38e0e86f0fee2b63d7a6bd6442d6b24d26

Who wins the games after the dance?

Terrans won 54.8% of all TvZs maps in GSL since 2019 S1. This seems incredibly high. The only proper explanation I have for this is the fact that Zergs overall do better in shorter, more compact Tournaments like IEM Katowice and Terrans usually do better in longer Tournaments which go on for weeks or even months that leave plenty of time to prepare. It's considered to be like this because Zergs generally have a passive, reactive role in the matchup and do not need as much preparation as the Terran who actively needs to find ways to throw the Zerg off. Another thing that is not to be disregarded is that we don't even have 200 maps of data. So small irregularities aren't too uncommon.

Still, I'd consider it as sort of high.

So does the damage actually make any difference or is it completely irrelevant? Out of the 61 times damage is done to the Zerg the Terran won 39 times adding up to 63.9%. That's pretty high, but again it's an even smaller dataset... And also there needs to be no direct correspondence between the damage and the higher win rate. A possibility would be that players who are stronger in general and have higher win rates also deal damage during reaper dances more often.

But there seems to be some sort of correspondence and it obviously would make sense if killing a drone or a ling had at least minor win rate advantages for Terran.

    https://preview.redd.it/3m43wvb4zfb51.png?width=694&format=png&auto=webp&s=73ef1eb1121c9f7a86e25a87a6b3e4a5045729df

    Players

After that long, theoretical discussion, it's certainly a bit more interesting to look at how the players do in all of this. Which ones are doing well, who doesn't?

I'm only gonna mention players with enough games played because e.g. kiWian has a 100% ratio of dealing damage, but only has one reaper dance game. Makes no sense to include.

    Terrans:

The Terrans who are doing the best in the dances are Maru and TY. In 31 dances Maru has 13 Ling kills, 5 Drones and 4 forced Morphs. TY on the other hand only had 16 dances with 7 Lings, 2 Drones, and 5 forced Morphs. I'd give Maru the gold medal in this case tho. FanTaSy will get a well deserved 3rd place with 5 Lings, a Drone and 3 Morphs. He's the only Terran though who actually managed to lose the reaper in the skirmish.

    https://preview.redd.it/efsk9o66zfb51.png?width=588&format=png&auto=webp&s=510a13265e7dd6ad3d6ee8bc2a226121830f7ed4

    Zerg:

For the Zerg's side of things, it's a bit more tricky to determine the best ones. soO is definitely holding the Top spot with only 3 Lings lost in 13 Dances. The second spot goes to rogue with 3 Lings and a forced morph in 7 Dances. But after that, there's no clear third place. All other zergs seem to be doing similarly well/ bad.

    https://preview.redd.it/tbkop5e7zfb51.png?width=588&format=png&auto=webp&s=62531fe814d0d20d85d24aacef91e17ac6d96ea0

The only thing that came to my attention was that Dark, RagnaroK, Scarlett and Armani don't seem to be doing too well.

Final fun fact RagnaroK once lost all 4 of his Lings in a game against SpeCial.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this or at least learned something. Of course, I'm open to any feedback or other suggestions. Feel free to discuss the statistics in the comments.

    Have a great time, everybody!

Why do pros often have units retreat when it is clear that the units wont get away?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 06:03 PM PDT

    Extremely mild spoilers -

Watching Astrea vs SpeCial. SpeCial has a marine and hellion and takes out Astrea's adept. Astrea pulls back his zealot and is chased by the marine and hellion. Wouldn't it make more sense to have his zealot engage while his adept was fighting? Give him a chance to take out a unit rather than being chased by a faster unit and don't turn and fight.

Is it just a matter of them not paying enough attention to that engagement? This particular scenario wasn't very impactful obviously, but I've noticed it over and over again in pro games I watch

    Casting so far at DreamHack

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 10:16 AM PDT

While there are number of gripes I have with how things have gone since this event went entirely online I want to say I've been really happy with the casting. We've gotten a lot of unique combinations of casters that we so rarely get. CatZ getting to cast with PiG and ZombieGrub was two combinations I had no idea I wanted but now rank so highly for me. Seeing Nate cast a ton has been nice and rotating hosts has made for a lot of fun and special casts we wouldn't normally get.

Throw in the great work of the B stream has made the event so much more enjoyable than I was expecting. They could have just thrown Wardi (who has been great on the main steam) or rifkin on the B stream and let is just be the same-old type of event but having Grant, Creighton and MCanning really up'd my enjoyment of the event. If it was just rifkin, I'd likely not have tuned into the B stream. If this format is continued through future DH events due to the virus I would love to see even more online casters get some time on the B stream like Temp0, the Gauntlet duo, Lowko or some of the AlphaX or SCVRush casters. Obviously cost matters but the B stream could have been a throw-away effort but I'm glad they didn't.

With a lot working against this event, I'm glad the casting production has been one of the highlights for me.

    I, Mengsk

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 01:00 AM PDT

On the Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty soundtrack is a track called "I, Mengsk."

Within is a tenor duet that is apparently an homage to the Brood War track "Brood War Aria."

Are the words anywhere? Is the sheet music (for the original or remake) available? Everything online is pretty much wrong.

    StarCraft Wiki/Lore Discord's 10th Anniversary Community Contest

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:16 AM PDT

    Hey folks!

So, coming up on July 27th, we'll be hitting StarCraft II 10th anniversary! While a lot of the subreddit focuses on the competitive and esports side of things, there is of course still the vibrant campaign, Co-op, and lore communities out there. So, for that side of the community, on behalf of the StarCraft Wiki and StarCraft Lore Discord, I want to do a little bit of a raffle to help the festivities as we celebrate 10 years since we all started the Second Great War.

There will be five "tickets" you can earn for an opportunity to enter. Each ticket you earn gets you another slot in the raffle drawling, and you can earn as few or as many as you want completing the challenges. The "events" are fun little personal achievements in StarCraft, and I hope it'll inspire you all to go out and do some interesting stuff in SC and SCII. Either post in the thread itself, PM me, or if you're reaching this via other sources and don't have/want to make a reddit account, email me at subsourian@yahoo.com.

    CHALLENGES

    1. 100% the achievements in any one StarCraft II campaign: You only need one campaign; you won't get extra credit for having them all done this time around. But this way you also don't have to suffer for not having done Lost Viking. Take a screenshot of the campaign select screen and submit it.

    2. Take a picture of any StarCraft piece of media or merch you own: Now note I'm being HYPER flexible with this one, but pull out your coolest piece of SC media or merch and get a picture of it. Books, comics, shirts, mugs, heck tattoos and drawings I'll count. Note that digital media such as ebooks or audiobooks totally count, just screenshot ownership of it. Putting a sticky note/notecard/notepad with your reddit username to prove it's you is encouraged.

    3. StarCraft Lore Quiz!: I've created a lore quiz to tickle the fancy of those who want to challenge themselves. To get credit you only need to get a 7/20, which should be accessible to anyone who's played the campaigns, but for those who really want to challenge themselves, I'm making sure to take the gloves off on some of the later questions, so some questions will be a bit unfair. After completing it take a screenshot of the last screen with your score.

    4. Return to Omega: Return to the end of the Brood War and relive the final confrontation between Kerrigan, the Dominion, the protoss and the UED. Beat the 10th zerg mission in Brood War, and screenshot the score screen (I recommend saving before you beat the level, just so you don't click past it). Don't cheat, or at least don't cheat enough for it to be obvious on the score screen. For those who never played SC1 or never got that far and want to give it a shot right away, you can download the free version and use the cheat "ophelia" then "xzerg10" to skip directly to it. I will also count Mass Recall's rendition of Omega.

    5. Reach Co-op Missions Ascension 50: Memorialize your climb on the Chain of (Co-op) Ascension. Screenshot your ascension level in Co-op, anything 50 or above will get you this one.

Challenges are due by July 27th at 12:00 PM EST, the day of the anniversary, where I'll announce and PM the winners.

    So, for a sample submission:

Remember, you DON'T have to do every single challenge to enter, just as many as you feel you can achieve, one entry per challenge completed. If you want to post some now and come back later for the others, that's fine too!

    PRIZES

After the mess of the 20th anniversary raffle with shipping physical goods (and a bit tighter of a budget), I'll be sticking to digital goods this time around.

EDIT: HUGE thank you for Deso for the donation and doubling the prize pool, so now we have an extra Executor tier prize and double the Praetor tier!

    EXECUTOR PRIZE – 2 WINNER: A $50 Battle.net balance gift card code

PRAETOR TIER – 6 WINNERS: A skin pack of your choice (or another single StarCraft digital product of equal or lesser value) OR a $20 Battle.net balance gift card code

ADEPT TIER – 10 WINNERS: Any single commander or announcer of the player's choice.

(I may increase the amount of winners on the last two tiers depending on the turnout we get)

NOTE: Inevitably there are issues with Battle.net's gifting system, we run into them every time and it can be a bit inconsistent with what's giftable and what's not. This will mean that there may be delay (some gifts require you to have a friend for more than a week on your friends list, but only some). So there's the chance of some delays. Also note that if a new commander/bundle happens to be released for the anniversary, I very likely will not be able to gift it.

HUGE thanks to the lore discord for helping me vet the quiz and make ideas for this thing, and a big shoutout to The StarCraft Observer for helping me spread the word a bit, and of course a big thanks to everyone for keeping the lore community alive 22 years into this great franchise.

Hopefully this ends up being a fun little thing for the community. Hope you all enjoy this little bit of a celebration of the lore, campaign and the little side of StarCraft beyond the esports, and here's to many, many more years in the Koprulu Sector.

How do the online premier tournaments work logistically? What about tournaments overlapping?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 01:50 AM PDT

Context: haven't had much time for SC2 this year so I barely get to watch vods of the matches (no caster conversation, or interviews or anything)

Of course I don't think bad of any player, but then again I also didn't think bad of Lif* back in the day. How does Blizzard make sure everyone is playing fair and how is the latency dealt with when players from different regions play?

Also, why is GSL running at the same time than the EPT summer? I mean Innovation will have to play so much today, hardly seem fair.

New mode for KeyStone, the Arcade card game

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 03:58 PM PDT

    Hi /r/starcraft!

I'm the developer of KeyStone, a popular Arcade game that turns StarCraft into a deep card game with over 400 collectible cards!

I'm posting here today to let folks know I recently released a new PvE mode, called Nemesis Mode, that makes it easier than ever to get into the game for the first time! Nemesis mode pits you against major characters and factions from StarCraft lore, like Zagara, Alarak, and the UED. Each nemesis has 6 difficulty levels and special decks and powers that make them unique challenges.

The mode was funded by an active community ( indiegogo link ), and it's the 3rd successful funding campaign for the game ( 1st indiegogo campaign , 2nd indiegogo campaign ).

If you like StarCraft and card games, come check it out!

Also, since Arcade is on the community's mind thanks to news of patch 4.13.0, I'm happy to answer questions about the Arcade or the SC2 Editor.
