Why nukes in starcraft aren't that powerful: It's because everything is so durable and strong that only the center radius of the nuke (the fireball and 20+ PSI overpressure) actually does any damage.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:37 PM PDT

People often say that Starcraft nukes are weak compared to IRL, (of course it's a game) but Imma nerd out.

In fact, I think starcraft nukes are full-sized strategic warheads with several hundred kiloton or Megaton+ yield, and not punny tactical nukes.

It's just that everything in starcraft is just so DURABLE. so that only the Center of the detonation is effective in doing damage, thus it has a MUCH smaller radius.

    XXXXXXXXX

-Actual steel armor defeats nuclear blasts pretty easily.

During the '50s, and in the modern Day, Centurion tanks were actually placed INSIDE the FIREBALL radius of nuclear weapons, with multi-hundred kiloton yields or megaton+, and of course, the radiation and bbattering would kill everyone inside, but the tank itself was UNHARMED, a myth is that nukes annihalte things. It's a high-explosive bomb, a nuke won't crack a '50s era tank's armor, while an Armor pericing shell would.

But the thinks nukes seen "annihlate" are mainly residential buildings, WOOD housses in hiroshima, brick, and wood homes, apartment complexes and high-rises, they aren't exactly structurally stable.

Terran Structures are made out of feet of SOLID METAL, all of them designed for hostile enviroments, every barracks, commander center, and supply depot is a heavily-fortiifed BUNKER by today's standards, All of them have curved, dome-like structures that are low to the ground. They are built to withstand any enviroment, lava planets, atmosphereless moons, zero to 10 Gs of gravity, and entire COMMAND CENTERS are dropped from orbit, SUPPLY DEPOTS are dropped from orbit, they're withstanding RE-ENTRY.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If we take a minutman 1 warhead, 1 megaton yield. 10km radius against NORMAL cities.

-the 1-PSI blastwave at the edge will barely phase a marine

-3rd degree burns from thermal radiation against human skin won't do anything to power armor

-5 PSI-blast: Marines might have to go prone and be compelely unharmed, but what collapses a residential building will simply buffet a supply depot

-Ionizing radiation: People who colonize the middle of space eat that from breakfast.

-20 PSI-blast: conrete structures collapse. This is the threshold of actual damage for UNITS, but Terran structures would be fine, literally STEEL BUNKERS, not pussy-ass concrete. So even in the blastwave that collapses modern heavy concrete structures probably wont EVEN DAMAGE a supply depot.

-Fireball: Actual damage to structures, but cold-war Era tanks survive this, so a commander center (again, it can be on a lava planet, dropped from orbit, withstand radiation and extreme temperautres on atmosphereless moons) so if it were INSIDE a nuclear fireball could concievably SURVIVE.

-Again, it's about distribution of force, an cold-war era centurion tank can survive being on the EDGE of a nuclear fireball, but an RPG-7 or SABOT shell punches straight through the armor.

So in short, the radius of the nuke reticule only includes the 20+ PSI blast wave and the fireball itself, as those are the only things that actually DO DAMAGE, reducing an EFFECTIVE radius of 10+km against modern cities to less than 1km EFFECTIVE radius against Terran structures, so if an Terran commander were to order a nuclear strike on a base, he would see a 1-megaton nuke only have a 1-kilometer effective blast radius.

What is your favorite spell in Starcraft 2?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:52 PM PDT

It could be any ability that requires a button press for any reason.. It could be MULES because you like money, or corrosive bile because its fun to cast, or storms because they are so annoying, or changelings because they are so sneaky, or nukes because they are so exciting.

My favorite spell is the Viper's abduct. Its so fun to watch good zerg players yoink stuff and take it out. And I'm Terran!

ESL DreamHack SC2 Masters Summer 2020 Playoffs + EU Group Stage match thread 2

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:35 AM PDT

Welcome to the fourth day of the first week of the DreamHack SC2 Masters Summer 2020 tournament!

This thread will act as the thread for all of the regional tournaments to be played today, as they will follow each other very rapidly

To keep things actually readable and not intimidate anyone with massive walls of text, I won't have scoreboards in this case as, again, all our regionals will be on this same post, so we'd be looking at a lot of tables (especially with the still to be concluded EU Group Stage which has four huge groups). I recommend checking out the live updated scoreboards on Liquipedia.

New player wanting to get into multiplayer: where should I start?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:03 PM PDT

Experienced RTS player, but new to SC2. I have played through the campaigns and have a basic understanding of the different races and I wanted to try my hand at multiplayer as the scene seems pretty active.

Where can I go to learn more about the nuances and details of the game and races? I have been watching ESL matches to try and learn, but a lot of the little things go above my head currently.

    Why is sandbagging allowed?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:54 PM PDT

Ive noticed the further I move up the ladder, the more often people seem to sandbag. 4 of the last 6 games I just played were people quitting right at the start and if its so bad where Im at right now Id say about 1/3 of my wins are awarded to me this way. It also make me wonder when Im completely smashed by an opponent if he is truly at his rating or if he is moving back up the ladder after intentionally losing a bunch of games. Fixing this would be extremely easy. When an account does this you give them a timeout, if its repeated you escalate the timeout, and if it still doesnt stop you ban the account. Its what all of the chess servers do and Im sure many other games have similar systems. So why is sandbagging allowed in sc2?
