Artosis is Correct and Guy in Chat Doesn't Understand Mixed Strategy Equilibria

    Posted: 14 May 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Anyone who watches Artosis stream Brood War regularly observes interactions like the following:

    1. Artosis loses and complains that, for example, his opponent had units in the wrong place
    2. Guy in Chat says, "Artosis, if your opponent won, they aren't wrong. You need to learn to beat people who don't play in the most standard fashion."
    3. Artosis bans Guy in Chat

Let me explain why, from a game-theoretic perspective, Artosis is correct and Guy in Chat is an ignorant pumpernickel. Imagine the following game, with which Starcraft shares some essential features. The game is a modification of rock paper scissors:

Rock beats Scissors 80% of the time (loses 20%)

Scissors beats Paper 80% of the time (loses 20%)

Paper beats Rock 80% of the time (loses 20%)

Broken scissors (BS) beats paper 50% of the time, beats regular scissors 60% of the time, but loses 100% of the time to everything else

The Idiot Killing Strategy beats Broken scissors 100% of the time but loses to everything else.

A loss is worth 0 points, a draw (e.g. rock-rock) is worth 0.5 points and a win is worth 1 point.

    Let's discuss two questions:

    a) What are the Nash equilibria of this game?

    b) What strategy should Artosis play if he suspects that some of his opponents might be idiots who play broken scissors even if they shouldn't?

Answer to a): the unique Nash equilibrium of this of this game is to randomize between rock, paper and scissors with equal probability. The broken scissors and idiot killing strategies should never be played by rational players in a Nash equilibrium.

Answer to b): it depends on what fraction of his opponents he suspects might be naively playing broken scissors. Let's assume this fraction (x) is relatively small. Then the equilibrium for rational players is:

    P(paper) = 1/3 + 5x/9

    P(scissors) = 1/3 - 2x/3

    P(rock) = 1/3+x/9

If say 20% of players are playing BS, then these probabilities are:

    P(paper) = 44%

    P(scissors) = 20%

    P(rock) = 36%

So in other words, when there are a few idiots playing off equilibrium strategies like this, you don't completely avoid strategies that are sometimes defeated by idiots, and you don't switch to strategies that counter idiots but lose to everything else. You play the same strategies but you become a bit less likely to play the strategies defeated by idiots. However, this doesn't mean that you never get beat by idiots! You still have to play scissors sometimes -- it loses points to BS relative to paper or rock, but if you never play scissors, your rational opponents would always play paper.

Now here's the kicker: something resembling the optimal strategy is exactly what Artosis does! He plays a variety of strategies, some of which lose to BS. He's a little less likely to play strategies that are vulnerable to BS. But he can't avoid them completely because that wouldn't work given that a substantial fraction of opponents are rational. And he gets rightly annoyed when his irrational opponents win because they play BS. Just because their strategy worked ex post in one game doesn't mean it was justified.

    Caveats:

    1. Of course, it is an empirical question whether Artosis is mixing between strategies in an optimal way. Like everyone except Flash, he could probably improve by playing some strategies more and others less. But figuring out which ones is hard! The model above just shows why, from an analytical perspective, the complaint made by Guy in Chat is unfounded.
    2. It may be that from a psychological perspective, Artosis would grow more as a player if, following every defeat, he asked only, "What could I have done better?" and didn't spend time asking, "Did my opponent win because they played BS?" But this is pure conjecture on the part of Other Guy in Chat. What we know for sure is: it is hilarious when Artosis complains about people who play BS and probably increases viewership of his stream and resulting revenue.

    tldr;

    Artosis

    doth bestride the Starcraft World

Like a Colossus, and Guys in Chat

Walk under his huge legs and peep about

    To find themselves dishonorable graves.

Ok, so call me stupid, but I got the game recently, and I tried to 1v1 a friend. I've been here for half an hour and I CANNOT FIND THE ENEMY BASE.

So, at the risk of sounding like an utter moron, where is it?

Recently, often the 2vs2 teams option is missing when I team up with my friend. Sometimes it's there, other times it's not. Does anybody know what's up?
