AMA when this is 24h old - We wrote our Bachelor's Thesis on StarCraft II & Data Science and scored 97/100. AMA!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:00 AM PDT

THE AMA WILL BE DONE IN ANOTHER THREAD TOMORROW

Questions asked in this thread will be answered tomorrow in the new thread. We will also answer questions that are posted in the new thread. The new thread will be posted at 13:00 CEST and will be live for 4-5 hours.

    Hello!

We are six Swedish students at Chalmers University of Technology who wrote the Bachelor's thesis: Clustering and Classification of Time Series in Real-Time Strategy Games - A machine learning approach for mapping StarCraft II games to clusters of game state time series while limited by fog of war which can be found here and the graphical showcase poster can be found here.

    Abstract:

Real-time strategy (RTS) games feature vast action spaces and incomplete information, thus requiring lengthy training times for AI-agents to master them at the level of a human expert. Based on the inherent complexity and the strategical interplay between the players of an RTS game, it is hypothesized that data sets of played games exhibit clustering properties as a result of the actions made by the players. These clusters could potentially be used to optimize the training process of AI-agents, and gain unbiased insight into the gameplay dynamics. In this thesis, a method is presented to discern such clusters and classify an ongoing game according to which of these clusters it most closely resembles, limited to the perspective of a single player. Six distinct clusters have been found in StarCraft II using hierarchical clustering over time, all of which depend on different combinations of game pieces and the timing of their acquisitions in the game. An ongoing game can be classified, using neural networks and random forests, as a member of some cluster with accuracies ranging from 83% to 96% depending on the amount of information provided.

    The TL;DR of the Abstract:

We were able to classify ongoing games of StarCraft II, even when limited to the view of a single player, to meaningful clusters of game states created by analyzing tens of thousands of high-level games. Our results can be used for metagame/strategy analysis, win-prediction, etc, all in real-time.

    What we did:

You can find the showcase poster we made which graphically presents the work we did here.

    1. Sampling and parsing of 10'000 StarCraft II replays of top 5% players.

    2. Cluster analysis on the time series of game states to find distinct clusters representing meaningful differences in gameplay.

    3. Training classifiers by mapping games to clusters of game state time series while limited by fog of war.

    4. Analyzing the cluster contents by using feature importance analysis.

We look forward to speaking to you tomorrow!

Is Starcraft worth getting into in 2020?

Anyone else a bit tired of daily posts that are just screenshots of post-game BM?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:47 PM PDT

Seems like there are at least 2-3 submissions a day that are just screenshots of BM. Some of them can be mildly amusing, but 90% of them are just like "I hope you die, faggot." They really add no meaningful content.

Like, it's an online game, everyone gets BM occasionally, and sc2 is incredibly tame relative to other online games.

I probably sound like a grumpy old man, it just seems like there's always multiple posts that are like "ha! Look, this guy called me a faggot!" After seeing essentially the same post for the 10th time, it kinda loses its magic.

Now, you could make the argument that some memes can also be low-effort and unamusing, but at least they're making an attempt at humor. It's really not a big deal at the end of the day, but as someone who visits this sub multiple times a week, it is definitely noticeable how often it pops up.

Don't get me wrong, some of them can be genuinely funny. It's just that the vast majority are not. Kind of a subjective thing, and maybe you guys get a huge laugh out of people insulting each other's moms, but personally I get tired of seeing the same purple "go **** yourself little btch ass n*ger tryhard" screenshots every day. Imagine if everyone on league of legends, or CoD subreddits posted all their uninspired BM every day.

Personally, I'd rather see "I made it to gold league!" over screenshots of some 14-year old who just learned he can curse on the internet.

Again, maybe I'm just being a cane-waving old man, just wondering if I'm alone here, or if we all get a huge kick of these posts.

Is there a reason casters use verbs as nouns?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:31 AM PDT

This has been bugging me for about 9 years now. I'd really like to know why casters talk about "reaper harass" and "baneling connects" instead of harassment and connections. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a reason this is so common? I've really never heard other people talk like this.

Awesome content, reynor and serral both offrace against each other, (PvT, TvP, TvT) then play 2v4 not sure if it's the "real" Dark playing on the other team. Regardless it's one if the best videos I've seen in a while. Props on doing it I died laughing so many times.

Why aren’t Dark Archons used in PvZ in SC1 more often?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:22 AM PDT

It's something I noticed(keep in mind that I don't play SC1 competitively, so I don't have a full grasp on everything) in PvZ replays is that they never make dark archons to counter the Ultra ling assault. Isn't Maelstrom one of the most powerful spells against Zerg since they're all organic? I see them make dark Templars for harassment, but they'd let them get killed off before even making dark archons with them. Can someone explain why they aren't used?

How many games do Pro Gamers play before they get good enough to compete ?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:21 AM PDT

Just a general question because I've always wondered how many games it takes players like Serral to play before they get GM and compete properly in tournaments? I know most wont know but does anyone know roughly?
