Starcraft Salute to the people who never quit SC2

Salute to the people who never quit SC2

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 05:39 PM PST

I just realized what a huge milestone SC2 achieved making it to the 2019 most relevant PC games. While people laugh at the "daed game" meme, reality is HotS nearly killed the game entirely. Those 3 hour SH vs. SH games and other game design decisions that frustrated the original community caused a lot of people to leave.

LotV may have nursed SC2 back in shape from a vegetative state but without those who passionately kept the eSports on fire even if it was just cinders, you guys deserve a salute.

    StarCraft in VR

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:01 PM PST

I got homework from college to make a VR related project and I wanted to mix business with pleasure. So I thought about doing a StarCraft game in VR and this is what came out of it.

Where are they now? Starcraft BlizzCon Panelists

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:01 AM PST

With all the recognizable faces that have left Blizzard or been moved to other teams my friend and I got really curious and we made a list of visible Starcraft names who have appeared at BlizzCon at What's Next panels, Deep Dives, Pylon Shows, and whatever from 2017, 2018, and 2019 and looking up where they are now. I don't know that this will be particularly informative, but I wanted to share what we found. Let me know if you have something to add.

Dan "Artosis" Stemkoski - Pylon Show Host: Still hosting The Pylon Show as well as IN-DEPTH and doing streaming and commentary for Starcraft II and Starcraft Remastered. He's recently started putting a little more effort into YouTube content creation.

Dario "TLO" Wünsch - Starcraft II Player with TeamLiquid: Still playing professionally. His collaboration with DeepMind seems to have wrapped up.

Oriol Vinyals - DeepMind Researcher: Published the findings and did some media work. It doesn't look like DeepMind will be doing much more with Starcraft II although parent company Google will be doing other kinds of collaborations with Blizzard involving YouTube and Google Cloud.

Jonathan "Carbot" Burton - Starcrafts Animator: Starcrafts had a 30-minute series finale. He still plans to do occasional one-off Starcrafts episodes but the story is wrapped up. He's still doing a lot of cartoons, primarily based on Blizzard properties.

Tim Morten - Former SC2 Production Director: Left Blizzard shortly after BlizzCon 2019. He's made some podcast appearances and expressed interest in continuing game development outside of Blizzard.

Ryan Schutter - SC2 Lead UI Designer: Still Lead UI Designer on the SC2 team.

Rob McNaughton - SC2 Lead Artist: Still on the SC2 team(at least as of 3 months ago. No LinkedIn or Twitter to go by.)

Kevin Dong - SC2 Lead Co-op Designer: Still on the SC2 team as Lead Co-op Designer. Most recently oversaw the balance updates to all the more recent Co-op Commanders two months ago.

Michael Scipione - Former SC2 Versus Designer: Currently doing game design and balance on Warcraft III Reforged.(Some people mislabeled him as team lead but as far as I can tell he's just more comfortable doing interviews and panels than other designers in his group.)

Christopher "Crush" Reed - Former SC2 Lead UI Designer: Currently Senior UI Designer for World of Warcraft.

David Sum - Former SC2 Lead Co-op Designer: Couldn't find any information about whether he's still with Blizzard or what he's been doing since Kevin Dong took over as Lead Co-op Designer.

Valerie Watrous - Former Lead Writer: She changed her name to Valerie Chu after getting married to another Blizzard writer and has contributed to multiple digital comics and videos. Currently she's a writer on the Hearthstone team.

Travis Castillo - Former SC2 Lead Artist: Not sure what he's up to. He did work on Overwatch and World of Warcraft as late as 2018. His LinkedIn account has a lot that is only visible to LinkedIn members. However it does show that he's based in Orange County and that he recently liked posts about the Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV announcements. So I'm assuming he's still with Blizzard.

Geoff "iNcontroL" Robinson - Former Pylon Show Host: He died last year at 33 years of age. There was a nice tribute to him at BlizzCon 2019.

Sean "Day[9]" Plott - Panel Host: He streams content for a lot of games, primarily Magic the Gathering and DotA 2. I haven't seen him do any content for Blizzard games or appear at one of their events since BlizzCon 2018.

Grant Davies - SCR Lead Engineer: Still the lead for Starcraft Remastered. He will post about the game on Twitter and the official forums as well as appearing in occasional Developer Update videos and Pylon Show appearances.

Bob Fitch - Technical Director for original Starcraft: Currently working on Hearthstone as a Technical Director.

Collin Murray - Lead Engineer on original Starcraft: No information on him since his work on World of Warcraft in late 2018. Not sure if he's still with Blizzard or what he's doing.

Samwise DiDier - Blizzard Senior Art Director: I'm not sure what his current relationship is with Blizzard and "Does Samwise Didier still work for Blizzard?" appears to be a popular Google search. He was definitely still Senior Art Director when they were promoting the 25th anniversary of Warcraft last year but I don't think he was at BlizzCon 2019. But I can only find recent information about what he's been up to outside of game development. He's done writing and art for multiple fantasy novels and how-to-draw books. And he does album art and background vocals for the band HammerFall. But he's done these kinds of projects in the past while also working at Blizzard, so that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Brian Sousa - Former Lead SCR Artist(was also artist on original Starcraft): He was recently working on Warcraft III Reforged but left Blizzard shortly after BlizzCon 2019. For the moment he is helping his family members with their real estate investment firm Philips Sousa Investments.

Rob Bridenbecker - Vice President of Technology, Strategy, and Planning: He is still Blizzard's Vice President of Technology, Strategy, and Planning and is also Executive Producer for multiple games including Starcraft II.

Pete Stillwell - Former SCR Senior Producer: He now serves as Lead Developer for Warcraft III Reforged.

Are players who were banned in the Kespa scandal (like YoDa and Life) banned from the new ESL and Dreamhack tournaments?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:06 PM PST

I thought that since they were only banned by blizzard, maybe they are allowed to qualify for ESL. (I don't support any match fixing these players have done, Im just curious)

How do you beat very hard AI as Protoss

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 07:31 PM PST

(Sorry for no tag I didn't find one that said question)

I just started playing Starcraft2 and made it to very hardAi, but I just can't beat it.

I reach the supply to build things effectively, but when my army clashes with the AI (primarily the Zerg) it depletes in seconds.

Is there a specific way to get around Zerg as Protoss, using 8 gates is not so fun vs them

    In-Game and Menue-Beep + in-Game Lags, Win 10, after AMD Radeon Update

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 12:31 AM PST

    • Win 10 Pro (up2date)
    • Radeon R9 390, 8 GB (Driver v.20.1.x)
    • 16 GB RAM
    • i7-4790

My Medium-High Desktop PC shows heavy Lags / FPS drops in-Game, 4v4, Starcraft 2.

There only some rare moments of fluid FPS.

Sometimes i noticed 4 - in a row beeptones (from low to high tone). But i can not say where it comes from.

Its only in Starcraft, its not my PC-Motherboard.

I update my AMD before and there is just another update i do just now (from 20.1.x to 20.2.1).

Before i never noticed any Lags or something. I also reboot after the first update.

If this problem just to my Computer?

Is it the Driver? (nearby possibility)

is it Blizzard? (hear nothing from the players)

is it my Internet-Speed? (seems not 12 mbps for download)

    EMBOT - Build Order Tester

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:39 PM PST

Artosis and his guests on the pylon show just asked if there were any good build order trainers in existence. SALT and overwolf were listed as possibilities, but both have their flaws. I have a better alternative, that I made two years ago and then didn't advertise due to trying to be a perfectionist. So down with my perfectionism, what I currrently have is better than both the alternatives, and is currently available to use on all servers.

I made this in 2018 when I was sick of there being no good build order testers (Whereas there were plenty in wings of liberty), and I still use this extension mod when I want to train myself up. I had to learn how to use the map editor from scratch, and I don't recommend it...

If you just want to try it out, create any ladder map with the extension mod "EMBOT - Build Order Tester" (Just search EMBOT), and let me know if you have any issues.

    Features:

    • Instant map resetting as any race (SALT takes like 15-20 seconds)
    • Build order importing via spawningtool.com
    • Build order tracking when not using an imported build order
    • Easter eggs when you load a viking to a medivac or an ultralisk to an overlord
    • Actual developer support (If I want to call myself a developer)

If you want to help out, let me know of any and all bugs you see, OR tell me if you have experience with the map editor and can help me with those bugs. I want this to end up as a fairly open resource to the community so we can all have an easier time improving at the game.

NOTE: Saving build orders is impossible in extension mods, that will never be a feature unfortunately.

    Currently known bugs:

    • Destructible rocks don't respawn
    • Multi player support (Trying to 1v1 friends using the mod) is weird and buggy at times
    • Swarmhosts are buggy in imported build orders

    Currently missing features:

    • No build order exporting
    • Multi-player support working properly
    • An in-game timer that isn't very obviously pasted over the actual in-game timer

i am the only one missing WOL kind of maps versatility?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 06:05 AM PST

i see that majority of maps as of late play the same way, they dont add diversity that much, does anyone remember in wol the infamous planetary fortress rush in scrap station? or getting tanks in a unreachable cliff?, getting the back door of your base open due to a rush?

also there is no map right now with a dedicated air mineral base!!!

this are the maps that i miss the most

Scrap-station? Xelnaga Cavern? Metalopolis ? delta quadrant? jungle basin? typhon peaks? antiga-shipyard and many more

so which old classic map would you like to see brought back to LOTV?
