Is it just me, or did this change from January 23 to March 11? I thought we were getting new maps this week, what happened? Did blizzard announce something and I missed it?

Terran 3rd should be a PF in lower leagues.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:42 AM PST

Saw a post about Vibe implying making your 3rd a PF is just unthinkably bad. But I think he is simply wrong, esp for someone who teaches new players how to play.

I'm going to argue that for lower league players(below plat, or maybe even including plat. debatable), making your 3rd a planetary fortress is actually optimal in the context of the league they're playing in.

The reason is that lower league players can't make use of the extra income and information from mules and scans that well anyway(have you SEEN how much extra resources people float in lower leagues?), so the added benefit of having a MUCH safer 3rd far outweighs the opportunity cost.

For the same reason that sub-diamond terrans should never try to micro the first reaper beyond simple scouting, they should also make their 3rd a PF.

Wheres the best place to find SC2 schedules and replays?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:59 AM PST

I'm never sure when events are happening or even what events are happening. And when I see results here I'm never sure where the replay will be, for those I usually end up searching youtube.

    Edit: Thanks everyone!

Are reactors worth the cost to put on a barracks that costs 150 minerals?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:49 AM PST

I'll preface this by saying I am nowhere near a pro or even master level player. This is just a thought I've been kicking around for a while, testing seems to yield positive results, and I wanted to see what others think.

The premise of this is that gas is a little too valuable to be dumping into doubling the production of a 150 mineral building. You get 12k minerals per base and 5k gas, it takes you longer to mine the gas and you have to invest resources in a building to do it. So 50 vespene would seemingly be worth around 150 minerals on it's own.

A reactor costs 50 minerals plus 50 vespene to double the output of your barracks, but that's not necessarily as good as having 2 barracks. It's a weak, static, add-on and if the one barracks it's attached to is destroyed the production of both units is gone. On the other hand, if you had 2 barracks and 1 goes down... well you can do the math.

If I'm not constructing it to eventually float in a factory or starport I'd rather just spend 150 minerals and have an extra barracks. You have 2 independent means of production, with more HP, that are not tied down to any single spot and can easily be rearranged if need be.

1 benefit the reactor has is speed. It builds more than twice as fast (30 seconds) as a barracks (80 seconds), however the fact that you can't produce anything while it's building takes away from that. You can build 1.2 marines in the time it takes to build a reactor (25 seconds). So by the time it takes you to build the second barracks you can squeeze out 1 more marine with a reactor. I suppose if you are really trying to hit a timing that could be important.

Another benefit to them is ironically the cost, though that's also my case against them... but the fact that it's a lower amount spread between 2 resources means it can be easier to swing sometimes. Early game you are more likely to have 50 gas and 50 minerals at one time than 150 minerals to spare. So again, if you are in a big rush and can't wait for the extra minerals maybe it's worth it.

Lastly, going back to the pros, when you have a bunch of open barracks you are versatile. Enemy went heavy armored units? Just spam tech labs down and now you have massive marauder production without having to float a thing. Or maybe you see them investing heavy in a long term strat and know a big burst of production would win the game... well then at that point investing in a 30 second doubling of your already massive production would be just the ticket.

    I dunno... discuss.

Which streamer would you like to cast a live event?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 04:34 AM PST

With ESL there is a lot of streaming going on, also some smaller talented streamers.

My vote would go to CreightonOlsen (gsl bald guy). This guy has 10/10 passion, hype casting, funny and extremely optimistic (even during tough times). Recommended.

Wouldn't mind see MCanning cast live once at well, mostly for same above reasons.

Did Paul Ainsley voice Stukov in Brood War?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:54 AM PST

The reason I ask is because Castulo Guerra had been credited to have voiced Stukov for years now. But last year I had reached out to him, and it turned out that he had voice Duran, not Stukov. And also Jayson Hayes (whom I actually voice called and confirmed) revealed that he was Artanis.

So that leaves Stukov with no actor, and Paul with both roles being false. However he is in the credits on the manual, so we know he voiced someone do we think he voiced Stukov? It would also make sense, since Stukov appeared in HotS with a new voice actor around the same time that Paul passed away. But how can we clarify?

I've asked lots of people that worked on the game, and no one knows. Does anyone know how we can find out? Does he have living family members that would know? I'd love some help, as I've basically been trying to find out who really voiced who (which I've given the SC Wiki team the info for), and I'd really like to know who it was he voiced, and who voiced Stukov. If anybody here can help, that'll be great! Thanks!

New(ish) player wanting to play against humans.

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:29 AM PST

Hey! New(ish) player here. I had the game when I was a kid but I recently got back into it to have a way to keep in touch with friends. Which has been a blast!

But they're pretty good, and I keep getting dominated when I play.

I know what my mistakes are but what I really need is to practice against real humans. Playing against the computer so far has not been even a close approximation.

How can I get started playing against people at my own level?

(One of the people I'm playing against is my twin... So I don't have to emphasize that beating him eventually is pretty high priority 😂)
