How would you continue the story from Brood War?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:46 PM PST

As much as I love SC2 as a whole, I don't think I'm alone in wishing for the darker tone StarCraft 1 and Brood war had.

Story wise, I liked WoL the best because it felt pretty true to the story as we left it in BW... until Raynor saves Kerrigan at the end at least. I'm not saying it should've been Game of Thrones levels of killing Main Characters, but that mission in BW where you get to kill Duke and Fenix sticks out as a very poignant element of the series for me.

I loved thaaat betrayal aspect of Kerrigan and the scariness of the Zerg campaigns. The stoic and tragic Protoss, and the scrappy, crude Terrans. There are aspects of these traits that remain in SC2, but the story they accompany is far weaker I think.

I didn't care for HotS story, and LotV was meh, but better than HotS imo. Not here to trash on the story that was written, just kind of imagining what an alternate story could have looked like. I think the story could have been stronger had the writing focused on the shifting power balance of the 3 races. It felt like the Zerg was unstoppable by the end of BW, and by the end of SC2 it was just the BIG BAD AMON vs. weird angel Kerrigan, which felt weird and had very little payoff for me.

This has been on my mind recently I just wanted to know if anyone else felt similarly. How do you think they could have best continued the story? Or if this has been discussed before, what are some interesting points that changed your mind about the stories ultimately lighter direction?

    This game and mental health.

I think mental health in this game is important. Had somebody say this after a game and I became pretty alarmed. I tried to reach out to him/her after the game to see what if the person was ok.

Just wanted to let me people know if they see something like this, reach out, you never know what someone is going through.

    Katowice 2020 SC2

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:59 AM PST

Hi Guys, I am planning on buying a ticket for the Katowice SC2 games at the end of february.
I wanted to ask you if it's worth paying 120 euro for the premium seating, and if anyone went there?
Is it worth going overall and is the experience in those premium front seats great for the whole tournament?

    Alternate fix for the oracle

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:14 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm sure some of you have already seen another post suggesting reducing the oracle's minimum scan range from 5 to 4.5.

First of all, it is not the case that all weapons have a Minimum Scan Range (I'll call it MSR) that is 0.5 greater than the range of the weapon. This doesn't hold for any of the Melee units. Most units have MSR 5, some even have MSR 5 despite having more range (Stalker, Void Ray, Tempest).

While it is not the case that all weapons have a Minimum Scan Range (MSR) that is 0.5 greater than the weapon, a significant amount of ranged units do.

The poster is right in that reducing MSR closer to the actual attack range does make the unit less spastic to control as it will not move towards higher priority targets outside its attack range while scanning for targets. To improve this even further, this value might as well be set to be equal to the range. There is precedence for this in other units such as the Marine and the Hydralisk Banshee (6, 6). To fully eliminate this, the value can be set to be lower, such as is the case with Phoenixes (4, 5). , although this will result in similar scenarios as when Stalkers couldn't attack move over revealed Widow Mines.

EDIT: As /u/Strategyofthemind pointed out in the comments, I was using the wrong dependencies. I've updated the post with the correct MSR numbers. I've updated my examples to match.

Here is a video of the Oracle with MSR 4 in action:

    https://puu.sh/ERaKr/b9fef04ac4.mp4

    ---

I'd like to propose an alternate fix, although compared to changing MSR there isn't any precedence for doing this in other units, so this might be considered more of a hack.

After killing its current target, the oracle immediately acquires a new target regardless of where it is in its weapon cooldown. What this does is it forces the oracle to move towards and attack the highest priority target within the minimum scan range after it can no longer attack its current target (whether that is due to the target dying, becoming invisible, or otherwise untargetable).

Simply put, an Oracles will move towards a Queen or a Spore within minimum scan range after killing a drone, even if it can't fire yet. There are two important values here: The period and the damage point. The period is the minimum amount of time between each shot - the weapon's minimum cooldown time. The damage point is the point in time during this cooldown period that the weapon deals its damage.

For the oracle, these values are:

    Damage Point: 0.167 in-game seconds

    Period: 0.860 in-game seconds

This means that the Oracle will move to the next target after 0.167 seconds of firing its weapon if its current target is no longer targetable.

There is a way to prevent this behaviour by setting the value of the 'Reload Duration'. From what I've tested so far with the Oracle's beam weapon, the Reload Duration applies after a target is killed by damage applied by the beam.

Therefore I thought it would make sense to set a Reload Duration to be the difference between a full period and the damage point, preventing the Oracle from acquiring new targets until its weapon cooldown is over.

Here is a video of the Oracle with MSR 4.5 and no reload duration:

    https://puu.sh/ER9eg/d26d7e1bf7.mp4

Notice how the Oracle will attempt to move towards nearby threats within 4.5 range. I pull it back every time on purpose to showcase this effect.

Here is a video of the Oracle with MSR 4.5 and a reload duration of 0.693 (Period - Damage Point)

    https://puu.sh/ER9e6/4e03deac8c.m4v

In this clip the Oracle does not attempt to move towards nearby threats, staying fixed in place until I specify the next target or the Reload Duration passes, whichever comes first.

I have checked all other weapons to see if any other unit uses a Reload Duration and I haven't found any, so I will consider this a quick hack rather than an actual fix, as i find it rather unlikely that an actual fix would require an exception to be made for one particular weapon belonging to one particular unit.

New NA West team looking for interested players!

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 05:55 AM PST

Hello Reddit! With the close of 2019, I decided that I needed to make some changes coming forward, and one of those changes is to assemble a new team of like-minded individuals that want to seriously improve at StarCraft.

Team "it's EZ" was started with one goal in mind: make StarCraft II more effortless.

We make the game on ourselves hard enough as it is, but what if we took a different approach? What if we consciously chose to see the game differently? What if we changed what it meant to improve and grow? What if we adopted a mindset of least effort for most results? "What if..." is the question we aim to ask and take it to its limits.

We will take anyone looking to play their best. We want to make this easy; we want to make the process of improvement transparent and digestible. We believe that we can take anyone and have them give their best whilst feeling their best--even if it's not immediately obvious how. We will find a way.

Extraneous effort is justed wasted energy, so we live by the motto, "if it ain't easy, it ain't right."

We are a US team based on the West Coast and as such, practice hours will be based upon that. We will take anyone from any region, but the priority for scheduling goes to people based around that area.
