The portrait looks nothing like the front, so is it the inside or maybe the back?

New player trying to get into Brood War.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 09:16 PM PDT

I'm finally playing through StarCraft's campaigns (I played a bit as a kid but was too young to stick with it) with the remaster and I want to get into multiplayer, but ranked seems sort of overwhelming for a new player. Does anyone have any good resources for a new player? I'm especially interested in connecting with less experienced players for custom games but would appreciate any advice.

    Pronouncing Jagannatha

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 05:24 AM PDT

This will probably get downvoted to Hades, but I needed to rant a bit, and maybe provide something useful to the community!

As an Indian, who has spent his life hearing people mock my people's pronunciations of various English words (esp. in the US), it upsets me unreasonably to hear my favorite casters pronounce Jagannatha a new and wrong, butchered way each time the map comes up in Dreamhack.

First, here's how to pronounce the word/name

It means nath: "father, lord or guardian" of jagah: "the world, realm or universe". Hence jagah + nath. It is the name given to one of the avatars of Vishnu, one of the three primal gods of Hinduism

    Pronunciation tips:

    • Jug + un (like in french) + naath (same 'aa' as in 'car' or 'star', not like in 'bat' or 'flag')

    • The emphasized syllable is the "naath".

    Bonus:

    • The perfect pronunciation ends with a very short 'uh' that rolls off the 'th' in 'naath'. But it's better to ignore the last 'a' and end with a hard 'th' (like bath) than go "jagannathaaa"

    • The 'nn' represents a sound that doesn't exist in English, so I don't expect the casters to pick this one up, but here's my best attempt:

Good enough: just say 'n', but pause on it for a bit (like you would between 'n' and 'd' in pundit)

Pretty good: if you know french, and can pronounce 'un' like they do, then linger on that sound before starting the 'n' in naath

Perfect: instead of touching the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth/roots of your upper teeth, push your tongue against the (narrow) space between your two rows of teeth. Listen to the youtube link to see if you can hear the difference or replicate it.

Fun trivia: The English word "Juggernaut" like the Age of Mythology ship or the DOTA hero is a loanword from Sanskrit, and is a mutation of Jagannatha!

Jagannatha is an uncommon and archaic word even in Indian languages (it's a mythological reference and a pretty rare name), so I don't hold it against anyone who doesn't pronounce it right. But trust me if I hear a caster (other than /u/feardragon64 who should pronounce it right anyway jk) pronounce this consistently correctly in a future cast, they will instantly become my favorite :3

Edit: Jug-uh-naath is also completely passable (ignore the french-like 'un' or tongue-to-teeth 'nn' sound)

    Unfortunate Recall

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Help. Getting too excited and losing composure when winning.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 09:44 PM PDT

When I am facing a real good player and I know that I am winning, I tend to freak out a bit and become really sloppy in my play. My macro becomes erratic and I make poor decisions that I would not have if I was calm. How do you guys keep your mind straight so that any game is just a game and it doesn't matter who you play against?

    My progress

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 04:45 AM PDT

So i started playing at like april this year,

Watched vibe's b2gm and easily got to gold Got kinda stuck for 2 weeks until may. Then finally reached plat. So from may to now, (october) i have been struggling to reach diamond and finally, after 6 months? I've gotten diamond. Is my progress a bit slow? Honestly been struggling with timing attacks and multi pronged harass, and i love late game.

Sc2 is certainly the perfect game for me.

And for that dude who canon rushed me 3 times in a row, thanks for the MMR i needed.

Don't really have friends to share and wanted to let other people know that hey! I did something! :)
