My two-cents on when + why ZvP began to feel so lopsided...

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:09 PM PDT

*one of the reasons... I spend so much fucking gas just trying to not die to lings, that I die to everything else...

I'll keep this short and to the point...After atk/def upgrades were nerfed and then charge was nerfed, protoss kinda struggles to deal with ling heavy comps. Combined with melee upgrade meta and the struggle becomes even worse. Forcefields are countered by biles, zealots feel insufficient and adepts just get run over by banes (zealots too obviously)

Zerglings being so strong in the early / mid game gives zerg undisputed map control and dominance short of all-ins, this forces P to get all their information through air units (stargate openings) or adepts (lol stats vs. rogue g5) or hallucinations (you ever hallucinate a phoenix only to immediately watch banelings crash into your wall?)

The glaive timing works (sometimes) only because it strikes at a time when zerg cant effectively field either roaches or banelings, and glaive adepts are one of the few things that can effectively fight zerglings (even then, only en-masse or in choke points)

What results is protoss over-investing in gas heavy units, archons and colossus just to feel comfortable stepping away from walls and choke points.

These gas heavy investments are then either run over by roach ravager, or hard countered in the mid game by zergs flexibilty to go ling bane hydra, mutas or lurkers depending on how the protoss tries to respond.

I'd like to see atleast the protoss atk/def timing nerf reverted.

bonus opinion Lets face it, gateway units are trash (particularly without an upgrade advantage) If a deeper level redesign were feasible, i'd like to see a flat buff to gateway units and perhaps a nerf to Warpgate CDs to compensate. Aside from the MaxPax build (which basically requires T to not scout) when was the last time anyone was afraid of just getting straight up proxy gateway'd? Meanwhile proxy barracks and hatcheries run rampant and can be game-ending.

Anyone else feels super naked playing vs Zerg?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:43 AM PDT

Like when they research overlord speed early in the game and send 3 overlords to your main while your 2 stalkers/2 marines try to chase the overlords out, often not even getting a single one. Even Stats opening Stargate in 2 games didn't stop Rogue from scouting basically his whole base.

    GSL Code S 2020 S2 | Final | Rundown

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 05:04 AM PDT

There's only one thing better than winning a GSL Code S Final - winning two of them.

Coming into today, the refined history between our two competitors made things feel more than a little interesting. Rogue had the overall better record while Stats held more recent consecutive success in his favor including a victory over the Zerg this very Season. The numbers looked good enough for a competitive Final between two players eager to distinguish themselves with an achievement so few had ever earned.

The main issue here became an undeniable truth cheekily brought up during one of the last broadcasts, namely that there are two types of Champions and Rogue is unmistakably the better kind. The Jin Air Zerg went into this Code S with a perfect 6-0 record in Finals, almost none of which were particularly close. In the game of numbers versus intangibles, I'll go with the latter every time and it's not like even the raw data necessarily suggested Stats had much of an edge.

Furthermore, the current state of PvZ brought its own can bucket of worms, namely the Glaives o'clock staple getting increasingly more figured out with nothing better currently on the horizon for Protoss players. To make matters even worse, this particular Zerg's pocket Nydus Swarm Host shenanigans could develop into a serious problem if unchecked, almost making it feel like his opponent was starting down a map or two before the series had even began.

Rogue and Stats are both decorated veterans of this game, each of them is a Champion for their respective race, however they are not the same - something the winner made sure to make perfectly clear for all of us.

    Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously

Dominating, indomitable, unbeatable - Rogue gave us mortals yet another reminder that he simply doesn't lose Finals, adding one more prestigious name to the list of victims and stacking his undefeated record even more in the process.

    🏆 Rogue [ 4 : 1 ] Stats | ★★☆☆☆ | This Is My World

    • Deathaura | Things kicked off with the third Hatch being taken first thanks to the early Probe pressure with a fast expand for the Protoss as well. From there Stats put down the Stargate and used his early Adepts recklessly for a couple of Drone kills. The army of Spores and Queens then made short work of the Oracle squad attempting to have an impact. Rogue chose to go into the melee upgrade for his Lings with Hydras as his followup, respecting the possibility of a mass Stargate switch. Stats tried to do an Archon Zealot push that got demoted into a poke when he saw how much and what exactly the Zerg had to hold it off with, unfortunately meaning the incoming Mutas were primed for success. The huge Jin Air flock arrived inside the enemy base just as a few Stargates and Fleet Beacon were finishing up, shutting the lights off on that idea with the Swarm massing up for the final blow behind that harassment. Rogue then easily cleared the way with his trusty Mutas, making an opening for the Hydra Bane duo to roll over the Protoss completely around 11:00.

    • Golden Wall | The third Hatch first and late Pool felt even riskier on the designated cheese map, however Stats had other plans in mind. The fast expand by Protoss got followed up by two Stargates with a focus on Phoenixes this time, which at least initially did a lot of work. As we were watching Overlords and Drones get massacred by the dozens, Stats mined out the backdoor minerals and put his macro in overdrive. Rogue did himself a favor by investing in Overlord speed, stabilized as well as possible and quickly went into Hydra Bane again. What felt like a game destined to turn into a long drawn-out showdown as the Protoss set up his fourth turned into a complete blowout as the Zerg committed to an incredibly sharp assault. Rogue arrived as early as 08:40 to find flimsy defenses at the natural expansion and immediately took out the Cyber Core for free. Stats had a couple of Storms, but other than that it was mostly Phoenixes against a swarm of Hydras, needless to say things got ugly pretty fast and he tapped out accordingly.

    • Eternal Empire | For the third consecutive time Rogue went unpunished taking his initial Hatch in an uncomfortable location, what's a Cannon Rush anyway. Instead of doing something like that, Stats went a little more vanilla with the Glaives o'clock build finally, deciding it was time to win a map. Unfortunately for him, the Zerg was incredibly vigilant with his Lings and it's not like a lot of effort got spent trying to hide what the Protoss gameplan would be, so things devolved from there. Stats showed incredible patience with his Adepts and ultimately decided against gambling his entire army on a successful suicide harass mission, splitting off just a few smaller hit-squads instead to pick off Drones while the majority of the Protoss forces went back home. Seeing as that amount of pressure would be nowhere near enough to seriously hinder Rogue's legendary macro, the Jin Air Master then simply Droned up to his heart's content as he continued to swallow up the map before massing up with lower tier units to keep his opponent on his toes. Stats did a nice enough Robo transition featuring both Immortals and Colossus tech, which looked like it helped him hold off a weak attack by the Swarm, only to find out Rogue himself had teched up like crazy in the meanwhile. The closest the Protoss got to winning this game was around 09:50 when he found a sweet attack angle between the fourth and fifth bases for the opponent. Regardless, having just enough to hold on, Rogue shaved off one too many units making Stats think twice about pushing further so the Protoss reluctantly retreated instead. From there things basically became borderline impossible as the tech and base count superiority became insurmountable, with a mess of Lurkers and Vipers and Hydras washing over the outgunned Protoss circa 11:55 at which point the writing was on the wall for this one.

    • Submarine | I didn't think too much of the suspiciously early Hatch expand by Rogue - if anything, it felt like the Zerg had just emphasized even harder how unconcerned he would be with early aggression by his opponent. Rogue then decided two base time is the play and surprisingly put down a Roach Warren instead of going for the expected Lair into Infestation Pit. The early Adepts by Stats not only killed off 5 Drones but also got to see the aforementioned Lair, unfortunately only briefly before it got cancelled and the slow Roaches were queued up. The completely all in Ling Ravager Roach attack ran into some trouble around 05:25 as Stats hurried back home after scouting his opponent's lack of econ with a timely Hallucination, managing to get back behind his walls just in time. At that point it became a slightly more sweaty than usual case of Warp Prism Immortal micro for the win, a battle that went all too quickly in Stats' favor as you would expect, meaning at the very least the sweep would no longer be on the table.

    • Ever Dream | As we were wondering if Rogue would ever be punished for taking his third Hatch first while Stats went into the fast expand Stargate build that had already lost him a bunch of games, a few too many Lings showed up in the Production tab. With both Adepts across the map, the incoming flood already had amazing chances to get the job done, so when Stats got caught sleeping at 03:10 by slow Lings of all things it was time for the Protoss to go back home IRL and sleep it off.

    At least it was quick.

    • Maps of the Night - It really depends what you're into, I found Rogue's Muta Hydra two-punch on Deathaura really cool to watch, then if Stats had done things a little differently I feel like Golden Wall could have turned into a real game & finally the battle on Eternal Empire did look like a tight balancing act at least for a while, although admittedly as soon as this Zerg's macro gets out of control it means it's time to move on.

Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player:

    • Rogue is the Champion of Champions, 7-0 in Finals and every time he reaches one now it looks progressively less competitive. The only map he lost tonight felt like almost getting dropped out of curtsy, it was made abundantly clear pretty quickly there would be no stopping the Jin Air Juggernaut here. Rogue is now tied with only three other players to ever lift two Code S trophies - Life, Zest, NesTea - making all his painful Ro8 finishes feel like nothing more than a fading memory. Assuming what the Jin Air Champion said in the video interview just before the Final is true, Rogue's next challenge is to join the trio sitting at the very top i.e. Mvp, INnoVation and Maru, since winning is now a habit it's time to go for being the undisputed greatest to ever do it.

    • Stats got what he wanted, beating TY before going off to the military. Unfortunately for him at that point a Zerg God whispered in his ear "okay, but that's it". I think this was one of the worst Finals performances we've ever seen by the Protoss Master, which feels only partially related to his opponent and the current state of the matchup - lets be real, some of these losses were borderline unforgivable. Stats simply didn't have it in him to break the streak, you just can't let someone like Rogue get off to an insurmountable lead like that, in the end the Protoss falls to a Jin Air Champion just like Classic did. Lets see if Stats has a soO-like weekender victory left in him now, since I'm sure we'd all love to see this decorated and beloved veteran get another trophy before it's his time to go.

As always, if you think differently or have something interesting to add, feel free to do so in the comments below.

Catch you on the 20th of August for the GSL S3 Qualifiers thanks to Creighton Olsen once again, huge thanks to him for working things out so we can actually watch the games not just look at the scores.

Thanks as always for reading & see you when I see you! (:
