Back to StarCraft this weekend after a long hiatus. The last game to get back to plat had me waste 20 mins and deal with 33 missile turrets to beat a terran with no hope. Is starvation the only answer to super turtle terran for protoss? Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:46 AM PDT |

GSL Code S 2020 S2 | Ro4 | Day 2 | Rundown Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:27 AM PDT With one Champion already waiting in the Final, it's time to figure out which of the other two would be joining him. Semifinal #2 | TY vs Stats History can be a heavy burden. Coming into today TY had a 15-2 map record earned over the past couple of years against Stats, making him the abundantly clear favorite. More than that, statistically speaking this match's result was a foregone conclusion, which can certainly make you feel deflated as the underdog even before the games start. The reigning Champion secured his first ever GSL trophy last Season looking as good as ever and bringing next level preparation to the table. In doing so the Terran took down Dear, Stats and PartinG on the way to Code S Gold. While this Season initially felt weaker from TY as he skipped a Group Stage and didn't really impress in the Ro16, as soon as the Terran hit the Playoffs he once again made short work of PartinG, basically telegraphing nothing had changed and pointing towards the repeat. Stats on the other hand had so much going against him already. Even without addressing the military-sized-elephant in the room, a lot of the Protoss player's games over the last two Seasons weren't that inspiring. Frankly, it felt like the once upon a time Champion's arsenal was just too limited, making any dip in form essentially into a death sentence. With history going against him and the clock ticking what was left of his time away, Stats could only rely on what brought him to the dance - solid defensive macro play - and he would have to hope against hope it would be enough. Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously "Just one more time before I go I'll let you know" - flipping the script through the power of some extraordinary macro play, Stats found it within himself to overcome the Champion, making it back to the Code S Final after so long on his way out of the scene - Rain and Classic are sitting somewhere smiling. M2 | TY [ 2 : 4 ] Stats | ★★★★☆ | Deflected - Pillars of Gold | The immediate Engineering Bay block by TY forced the Nexus to move, which is obviously not ideal against an opponent who's shown so much aggression in the matchup already. Stats had something tricky up his own sleeve, however, with a proxy Stargate coming in hot. The problem turned out to be an extremely vigilant and carefully controlled SCV that spotted the shenanigans and pulled away in time, setting up TY for the straightforward shut down. Stats attempted to get his Oracle out anyway, however the one base play by his opponent meant there were way too many Terran units on the field so there could be no salvaging the situation for the Protoss. TY then simply dropped some Marines off inside the enemy main, gunning down 11 Probes around 04:10 even as Stats desperately tried to hold on with everything he had. With his army supply in the gutter, the Protoss tried to get a cheeky Dark Shrine up, but TY had no interest in prolonging the game any further so he marched across the map to end it accordingly.
- Eternal Empire | It was then time for our first macro game from TY in the Playoffs and his opponent was of course happy to play along. The third CC came in as fast as you would expect here while Stats went for conservative two base Robo Bay play until he eventually spotted the extra Orbital with an Observer. From there both players established their three bases and powered hard on them, with Stats notably putting down a fourth while going into a second Robo, using only Archons from the other common AoE branch. Seeing as TY is a macro beast in his own right, the Terran correctly assessed he was in the supply lead significantly, so he pulled The Boys™ and arrived at roughly 09:40 with what felt like a game-ending push. Instead of crumbling under the pressure Stats showed off some tight control, barely getting out a crucial Disruptor shot as he was being chased down and positioning his army to perfection as the Terran found himself being indecisive all of a sudden. Some key Force Fields, picking off all the Tanks for free and managing to splash & sandwich away the large majority of the infantry made it so Stats swallowed the attack whole, tying up the series through intense solid defense.
- Golden Wall | Considering it's the designated cheese map, I found it surprising TY chose this one to proxy two Barracks on with a full wall at home, however Stats seemed to agree as he unfortunately called the bluff by expanding all the same. While a vigilant Probe kept scouting after that, the position of the proxy was so perfectly terrible it just couldn't be found in time, so the Terran simply massed up way too many Marines and as the assault was finally revealed around 03:25 it already felt too little too late to stop him due to the army supply gap, Boys™ in tow and just one Sentry looking to come up with a miracle.
- Deathaura | The two players then decided to replay Eternal Empire with some key differences. TY got his economy rolling even harder and faster, then dared to take his Raven across the map for some harass and pressure & finally focused a lot more on upgrades. Stats once again tried and failed with his Warp Prism harass, so he put down the fourth Nexus and Robo, trying to mass up what he could before what felt like an incredibly committed incoming attack arrived again. When the time came, however, TY had other plans than an all in so at roughly 09:30 as the Terran was harassing and poking on multiple fronts, Stats got stretched way too thin with his already smaller army, losing his fourth base in the process. TY then packed his bags and went home despite the army gap, satisfied with his lead going into the longer game. Stats took the entire thing on the chin pretty well all things considered, double expanding like a Zerg as he was teching into DTs and closing the supply difference in a hurry & turning it around with key catches like the one around 12:05. TY's last real impact on the map occurred when he dropped in the main and took out the Fleet Beacon while getting to see the Stargate transition on the way. Not even a minute later Stats found himself flanking the largest chunk of Terran army on the battlefield at 14:35 which forced a siege and kicked off an unwinnable base race against the Protoss forces that had a huge head start. DTs and Zealots teamed up to start killing bases on the right while the main army for Stats cleared out the CC on the left before TY could even try to regroup, so as all his SCVs were massacred immediately this turned into a glorified Zealot-based math problem the then tiny splintered Terran army couldn't solve.
- Submarine | What was initially looking like a repeat of the macro openers by both players got cast aside as soon as we spotted the Marauder in the Terran production queue. Clearly going for the same build he'd used against PartinG, what surprised the most here turned out to be the completely reckless play with the first Hellions and Reaper by TY, diving in way too early in low numbers with them to feed into Stats. Nevertheless, the army supply gap was still considerable as the actual attack arrived around 04:35 with the Marauders helping to sandwich and zone away the Protoss defense, resulting in a barbecue that roasted 17 Probes. With the worker count basically even by the time things got cleaned up, Stats teleported his Blink Stalkers across the map for some payback and the at that point flimsy Marauder Hellion force simply couldn't stop them from getting it. The lack of a quick second Medivac, late and single Bunker, along with the obvious composition deficit made it so 12 SCVs got blown to pieces, creating an insurmountable econ gap. Back at home the Protoss even had Colossi ready, there was just no chance in hell for TY to get back into this one realistically, so even after he held off an unnecessary attack by his opponent a few minutes later the Terran accepted there wasn't any point to prolonging the inevitable anymore.
- Ever Dream | The macro openers returned and everything looked the same until Stats decided to proxy a Dark Shrine. The problem turned out to be the opponent going fast 3xCC every time with a Raven isn't really something DTs look forward to contesting. Seeing as being invisible wasn't an option, Stats did what he could to keep his opponent from going across the map to kill him right away, namely utilizing some sweaty Archon drop play against an available disable and turrets. TY sniped the Warp Prism before too long after taking virtually no losses, so he dropped across the map to finish the game, only to find a Colossus already there so he was sent packing pretty quickly. Around the designated time of 09:30 for this match, the Terran arrived to contest the fourth Nexus before it was even up and then split his forces to put his opponent's multitasking to the test, earning himself the pickoff while defending Warp Prism harass effortlessly as the cherry on top. Stats kept his cool and expanded away on the other side of the map, leaning on harassment to keep his opponent honest. TY kept beating around the bush until he decided a straight up engagement wasn't an option, sending away a large chunk of army at 13:20 resulting in a bit of an anti-timing as his fifth base collapsed in the process. With more than enough to defend himself, Blink DTs running wild all over the remaining Terran bases and SCVs getting absolutely rolled in the chaos, a doomed "base race" was forced by Stats around 16:00 which felt more like a desperation move from TY than a real tactical decision, made even more painfully clear as just a few DT warp ins at home checkmated the Terran while what was left of his own economy fell to the Protoss assault, at which point all Stats had to do was figure out what kind of champagne he wanted to celebrate with.
Who needs Storm anyway. - Maps of the Night - Deathaura and Ever Dream were the true showcase of macro prowess by Stats, however without what happened on Eternal Empire there's no way the fourth map goes the way it did, so that was also really important. I think with each consecutive game things only kept getting better for the Protoss, so I'll personally go with the last map because of the unfruitful start Stats had to transition from, which he did marvelously to avoid any chance of an intangibly difficult G7 as he closed things out in a terrifying display of multi pronged attacks and harassment.
Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player: - Stats did whatever the opposite of adaptation is in this match and it didn't end up mattering at all. This isn't the first time the Protoss macro monster has had a clear gameplan he wouldn't deviate from and it's even kinda funny things only started going wrong when he tried to be a little wacky. I think the games Stats lost could have happened to anyone, however the ones he won are exclusively his in the sense that no other Protoss player in the world right now could have beaten TY like that. Now it's time for ZvP... and to make matters worse or better depending on your perspective, Rogue isn't known for showing mercy. Still, heading into today historically speaking Stats was up against it, so lets see if he has it in him to produce another unlikely upset to tie with Zest for most Code S trophies as a Protoss player.
- TY tried everything. I don't think the Terran underperformed in the slightest, which only goes to give that much more credit to his opponent. TY even got the lead in the series twice, there just isn't much more you can ask for as the favorite. At key points in every macro game the Terran ended up just a little short today and unfortunately that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes, the repeat was not meant to be it seems. I wish he could have gone for Mech on at least one of these maps, however I assume based on practice that wasn't a real option, so I'll let it go. Final note, no offense to Stats but I'm really disappointed we've also lost another TvZ Code S Final, here's hoping we're not in for a poor ending to the Season yet again.
As always, if you think differently or have something interesting to add, feel free to do so in the comments below. Catch you on Saturday for the GSL Code S Final, with Rogue putting his undefeated offline Bo7 record on the line against macro made manifest a.k.a. the Shield of Air himself Stats, as both players look to lift a second trophy to tie for the most ever by their respective races. Thanks as always for reading & see you when I see you! (: -M submitted by /u/d1MnZz [link] [comments] |
