Followup on the 14 page BlizzCon lore packet: The (very few) questions that got answered

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 01:55 PM PST

    Hey folks:

If anyone remembers the thread from a week ago, I made a giant list of questions to scare the writers with, and people asked if I'd post the answers I got when I got back. Well I actually did get a few!

But like five of them. And the vast majority for the new comics (Soldiers and This Sacred Land) since those were the only authors around.

So yeah, sorry to disappoint but I'll deliver on my promise and post what I got!

Still, was a fun experience, and I really loved talking to all of the devs and the like. Sadly never found the holy grail of SC lore historians, Justin Parker, or one of the bigger writers of recent history Valerie Watrous but I'll find them next year!

Big thanks to Andrew Robinson and Robert Brooks for humoring questions about their work, and for Madi Buckingham, one of the lore historians for the recent comics, who was deeply passionate enough to have a twenty minute conversation with me about datapad consistency. Also Chris Fugate who showed there are still super knowledgeable lore people fighting the good fight on StarCraft's dev team (and for putting up with me being bad at Mengsk), and Kevin Dong (Monk) for being chill and putting up with my jetlagged questions. Yall are great and I hope to harass you all next year.

    Questions That Got Answered
    • When does This Sacred Land take place in the timeline? - It takes place after Legacy of the Void, but before Raynor vanishes. Brooks noted that after calm had come to the sector, this was the Dominion taking stock of the situation and realizing they forgot Stetmann. One thing to note is I also tried to clarify that, while the game says Raynor vanished two years after Amon died, the revised book timeline says both the epilogue and Raynor's vanishing takes place in the same year. Sadly Brooks couldn't comment either way on that, but it does give us a time period, either way between 2506-2508 and before Raynor vanished and things like Nova Covert Ops.

    • Who is the Ghost in Sacred Land? Is he a character we've seen before? - Internally the team has a name for the ghost, but he is nobody we've seen before in prior works. He was set up to create another character in the story of Stetmann, and it is someone they would like to use in future works, though they clarified that nothing had been confirmed in that regard.

    • In Soldiers, is the Swill an actual place, or is it slang for poor Korhal communities? - "The Swill" was futurist slang for poor communities that Kevin Anderson worked with the lore team on, to make slang that was both distinct to StarCraft while carrying the idea. It was not the name of a set place.

    • When does Soldiers take place? Does it take place during Shadow Wars? - Soldiers takes place approximately 2-3 years after the defeat of Amon, just enough for a new generation of recruits to be raised in the ideals of Valerian Mengsk and fully believe them. On whether it was during Shadow Wars, Anderson wasn't sure, though the comic strongly implies that it does.

    • Why was there a Defenders of Man/General Davis Vardona symbol on Colonel Perkin's desk in Soldiers? - Anderson does say that the smaller details were added by the lore team and approved by them, however he was unsure when those were added. Given that this is presumably sometime after Nova Covert Ops, when the Defenders of Man were defeated and Davis killed, this does raise some questions.

    • According to Phil Gonzo SCII was ordered not to have cerebrates in the game to "play nice" with Games Workshop. Is this still in effect? - Yes, it's still in effect, we very likely won't see cerebrates anytime soon if ever, and they're very unlikely to show up in an Overmind commander. However, I didn't get any deeper clarification as to why.

Things I Learned Not in My Questions
    • There are comics being produced down the pipeline, and some of them seem to be War Chest ones. While this is far from confirmation, this seems to imply strongly they intend to keep doing War Chests.

    • Both Buckingham and Roberts stressed that a big point in This Sacred Land was making a story that captured Stetmann's silliness while not "breaking" the universe and suspension of disbelief, and thus keeping the story and Mecha Swarm more grounded.

    • The reason StarCraft is spelled the way it is, with a capital "C," is because the Starcraft RV and bus company had already trademarked the name "Starcraft." So this was a means to get around that.

    • Mengsk will have a trailer coming soon(tm). I also got to play a good bit of Mengsk, so I can give thoughts on that too. He probably won't get special modified map lines (like Vermillion Problem) but he does have special lines when Raynor, Kerrigan and Tychus use Hyperion, Immobilization Wave and Odin respectively.

    • One of the main SC lore historians, Justin Parker, has an obsession with keeping starships depicted realistically in comics, with different functional rooms. One shot of Elms standing in front of a massive space window in Shadow Wars apparently plagued him. I am still bitter I was never able to find him, since battlecruiser consistency was a major thing I wanted to ask about.

    • Nobody seems to know who is in charge of the website to ask about getting short stories and lore sections of the SC webpage undeleted.

So yeah never let it be said I don't make good on my promises, but sorry I couldn't get more! I'm hoping to expand the packet to twenty pages and try again next year!

Heart of the Swarm Drone Only Brutal AMA

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:36 PM PST

Currently I'm on the front page with my Heart of the Swarm drone Only run on Brutal. I was also the person who inspired the Wings of Liberty no units run, which some people really enjoyed participating in, one dude even going as far as to speedrun it.

I just love doing these stupid challenges and I hope I can make a YouTube video about them relatively soon. However, every time I do one I receive a barrage of questions. I'll explain the rules of the run, the difficulties, and the things that surprised me.

Firstly, the rules I used for the Drone Only run. Many of the comments I received were something like "I see (blank unit) on the bottom right" or "You're using Kerrigan". My overall rule set was that you could only produce Drones and Overlords out of hatcheries. The challenge should realistically be called "Drone production only", but it just didn't sound right. This means that any units I get throughout missions or through various means (Talents, morphing, etc) are entirely eligible to use. Also, Drones mutating into buildings is entirely eligible. Spine and Spore crawlers were obviously great, but the MVP of this run ended up being the Hatchery.

I don't know what Blizzard did with their A.I., but they fucking HATE hatcheries. They don't go around it (even if there's units on the other side attacking them), they always attack it at highest priority. Some missions I've won just because I spammed Hatcheries around the mission objective. The final Narud mission was very tough because the final wave had Colossi, Carriers, Archons and Hybrids. I just put 13 hatcheries down and they decided Stukov was no longer a concern and attacked them for a minute straight until I beat the mission.

Another thing I hear a lot is "This is entirely possible with only Kerrigan". Let me divide this into two parts.

1 You can not beat the entire game with ONLY Kerrigan. The beginning planets are simply too hard , and if you manage to get past them, on Zerus you're stuck in a cocoon where your only defense is 5 Swarm Hosts and an occasional ability. It is entirely impossible

2 However, if you manage to get past Zerus it seems very possible to beat the game with only Kerrigan, with a couple of exceptions. I don't know if you've ever watched a speedrun of HotS, but there's a strategy called "Ninja Kerrigan". All it revolves around is doing a mission as quickly as possible with only Kerrigan. The prominent two being the last Korhal missions, where you can finish the final mission with ease in under 5 minutes. Trust me when I say the final mission was a bitch to play , but I didn't want to finish it so anticlimactically.

The last thing I see a lot is "Which missions were the hardest", there were two that came to mind as bullshit.

    1. Phantoms of the Void.

This is the final Narud mission, and it's a defense mission where Kerrigan is entirely unusable. This mission I had to get very scrappy, as the armies that were thrown at you were massive, including Colossi, Carriers, Archons, and of course Hybrids. The way I beat the mission was with Hatchery spam. Yes, Hatchery spam. The final objective I completed exclusively because I spawned 13 Hatcheries outside the defense point, and the Protoss Army focused them, and ONLY them.

    1. The Reckoning.

In most accounts this mission is easy. An all out assault on Korhal with Brood Lords or Ultralisks is trivial. However, with Drones... not so much. Static Defense was a joke, you had to turtle for the first 20-30 minutes until every attack wave from Mengsk was completed. You would normally make Spine or Spore Crawlers, but the problem revolves around the army compositions. Siege Tanks and Reapers (yes, Reapers. Remember Explosive Charge?) kill any chance of your Crawlers staying alive without help. The MVPs of the mission were the 3 Hydralisks you start with , which I morphed into Impalers. Out of the multiple attack waves, the ones with detection were the most vulnerable to Crawlers, so they were very effective at holding opposition. Also, Drones are not supposed to engage against BattleCruisers, Hell Bats, Siege Tanks, and Ravens with the old AoE missile. Most of the mission revolved around freeing the 3 Avenues so Dehaka, Zagara, and Stukov can start joining in the fight. Stukov was great at shoving them out of the left side, while Dehakas Ultralisks ravaged the right side. It eventually escalated to where I picked off the high priority units with Leviathan and Kerrigan, and charged in with over 300 Drones. The Drones weren't doing much damage, but with the sheer amount of them, and reinforcements trickling in, they did the job. The screenshot thats currently on the front page is what the mission finally ended on. It felt great to beat this challenge.

Anyway, with that said, I've done a challenge for both Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm. My last question is what would you like to see in a LotV challenge. I was thinking about an Aiur only run, or a Probes only run, but I'm not sure. Feel free to give suggestions in the comments. I love you all, have a wonderful day :)

No english cast for NeXT 2019 Autumn?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 01:58 AM PST

Seems like a killer high-level event that's going on rn. But there doesn't seem to be a english cast for it? Too bad. Is Wardi on vacation? He did a amazing job casting the Chinese Team League! After seeing that one I really think these Chinese events should get almost as good coverage as WCS. But they still seem like underground events to the Western public. I guess people might have some political tension with these Chinese events nowadays too..

China WCS playerTime accused former Chinese pro player MSK of map hacking

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 06:55 AM PST

*: All the exchange took place in the most popular Chinese-speaking SC2 forum in China so all the sources of evidence are unfortunately in Chinese.

On Oct 30, the Chinese WCS player TIME posted a picture of a player he met on the ladder and accused him of map hacking due to his failed attempt of double proxy barracks.

    https://www.scboy.com/?thread-50022.htm

On Oct 31, the Chinese SC2 player QzDdb, currently playing for Team LP (LaoPaoer), claimed that he knew the player TIME met. The player turned out to be a former Chinese SC2 player named MSK, who used to be playing for TVS-Gaming and X-team. QzDdb insisted that MSK did not engage with any form of map hacking.

    https://www.scboy.com/?thread-50433.htm

On Nov 3, MSK showed up and made a public statement explaining that he was testing a proxy starport strategy for the upcoming WESG event, and only got lucky to find Time's double barracks on-site during the game. MSK also posted several replays to demonstrate that he was indeed testing his strategy in several ladder games, including one with Supernova, which was later confirmed by Unmasked.

    https://www.scboy.com/?thread-52185.htm

Later that day, TIME responded in his streaming to MSK by saying that he will only apologize to MSK if he reaches MMR 6200 or breaks into WCS Global final. "I will apologize to you and admit that you did not map hack if you made it into the WCS Global Final as I did. "

    https://www.bilibili.com/video/av74554324/?p=2

The Chinese SC2 community widely criticized this response, and the entire controversy ends today with MSK posting his final comment saying he has quit SC2 pro gaming for some time, and all he wants is to clarify that he did not map hack.

"I wasted a lot of time trying to explain what happened, and all I get is more trolling from fans (of TIME). I am not expecting TIME to apologize, but as a former player who has already retired for almost three years, I do not think this thing is worth any more of my time."

Will we get an Alphastar bot after the research is done?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2019 08:44 AM PST

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a bot or bot service based on Alphastar once Deepmind's research has completed? It'd be pretty cool to be able to practice against it. I'm also thinking that might provide sustained interest in the game.

Maybe Blizzard would figure out how to market it with Deepmind. It seems like a smart idea so perhaps they could try to commercialize the software. What do you think?
