The state of the WCS Global Finals 2019 @blizzcon discussion and reflection as an attendee Posted: 05 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST Hey all, So I am all rested up after blizzcon and all that and I have been thinking a lot about generally, how the WCS global finals went down. I wanted to give a reflection on how I felt about the event as an attendee and I figured, I also would love to hear what others thought about the general state of the WCS global finals this year as far as an event goes. Things like it's schedule, the logistic elements of the event and the like. This was the 3rd WCS global final that I have attended at blizzcon and the 4th official WCS event. By in large I felt like this was probably the weakest WCS event I have attended all of them and I am going to give a list of personal reflections and reasons for feeling this way. I want to know what you guys think. Things that really did not work:So as far as the schedule goes, we are all aware by now that they decided to play out the full WCS global final on one day, that being Friday right after the opening ceremony. Overall, this did not work for so many reasons. First of all, because it was scheduled right after what was basically a massive opening ceremony. They did not actually start the WCS global event until AFTER the ceremony was over. This was scheduled at 1 PM PST, and of course it did not start on time. This year's WCS global final event was a massive scheduling nightmare. So in the grand scheme, we had first a full semi final series that was still in the middle of it as late as 6 pm. Then they rushed right into the grand finals. Generally the downtime between series was super short and rushed. The event did not end until after 11 pm PST. I honestly started to blank out from exhaustion by the end. Implications of squeezing the whole event in one day were that for one they were not able to keep on schedule, not even close. They were so behind it was insane. It also meant that the global finals wrapped up at a very late hour which was undesirable all around. As a viewer I was having such a hard time even staying awake, and I am of the blizzcon attendees who bothered sticking it out till the end. There was a massive exhaustion problem that just became so apparent. The casters and talent looked and seemed exhausted, the players... I mean those poor guys, I cannot imagine how exhausted they were after having to play multiple series back to back, all in one day and at the late hours of the west coast timezone. This also meant that when the exhaustion set, it had an adverse effect on their performance and ability to play at their best. With sufficient rest and pacing, they would have felt better, we might even have better series or different outcomes. I mean this is the apex WCS event of the year, to kind of just shortchange the schedule like that and have it become an adverse effect on the players is just so not cool. Another negative logistical outcome for the event running so late was late hour access. Basically, while the semi finals were happening, the doors officially closed for blizzcon. What that meant was, if you left the convention centre you could no longer re-enter to continue watching the WCS event. There is a lot to be said when your event runs so late that the convention centre literally closes before the tournament ends, at is it not a good thing. This obviously also had a negative effect on the viewership and attending for the event. For a lot of blizzcon attendees who would usually attend the WCS event, they decided to bow out because 1. too tired 2. it is blizzcon. People want to attend the event, go all out, have fun and then engage in the later hour celebration and party functions. But they are not going to sacrifice what is basically a big part of the blizzcon experience (the celebration, after hour events and parties) because WCS was so behind and crammed all into one day. Needless to say this also meant that a lot of people who were viewing at home also were not able to stay up so late to watch the event. People need their sleep, that is just normal. Last year, the WCS stage was WAY more hyped, the finals were way more exciting, and overall it all felt a lot more fulfilling because the schedule was actually paced well. It made it possible so that way more blizzcon attendees were able and keen on attending the full event because it did not interfere with the flow of the event or make people uncomfortably tired. This year's celebration and win was a lot more muted, with a smaller turn out, and not as en exciting touch because we just did not have the crowd we had in the previous years. They sacrificed massive turn out numbers from general blizzcon attendees who are not necessarily there for starcraft. They have made such huge progress in getting A LOT more blizzcon attendees to come and watch WCS in the previous years and this year they completely shut that down by virtue of the schedule, and logistical elements of the event. And now we can talk about the stage. Because the stage was intended to be SHARED between both the Starcraft and Overwatch esports event, the stage was basically half ass setup for starcraft. The desk layout was weird, they did not have the hanging banners like they did last year. Because of the dome arena layout, we also could not have joey rays bar be within the vicinity of the stage. The cool screen banners were not there, and of course the starcraft statues were buried in some other corner of the convention centre. I understand that they felt like the seating layout was better in that it was sloped, and not just seats lined up in a row but that came at a HEAVY cost. The arena just did not feel right and they had to forego a lot of the usual theme and attractions around the WCS stage because of the way it is setup. This is of course aside, as I mentioned before, that this arena had to balance a setup that was both for SC2 and OW which meant that it was a hybrid setup that just did not seem ideal. There was no confetti, no hype, no massive celebration for Dark like there usually has been in previous years. Lastly, the unintended effect on how fulfilling or memorable the whole tournament felt. It felt rushed, it felt muted, the excitement was wayyy down. We did not even have much time to process one series before it immediately went to the next. Usually between series in previous events, people go to the bathroom, get food and best of all, go to the cheer station and design or draw awesome posters in reaction to the outcome of each series and the players that make it through. There was basically no time to do that, and people by the end prob felt like, screw it, too tired, no time. I sincerely hope that they do not repeat this same schedule layout next year. It was generally uncomfortable and super underwhelming. I still very much enjoyed a very great WCS event but I feel like, especially with the stacked talent we had lined up for the playoffs, a lot of that hype and enjoyment for that was taken away as a result of messy planning and logistics. What did you guys think? How did you guys feel about the WCS global finals, both as attendees and viewers at home? [link] [comments]
A bit of sadness I've been feeling post-Blizzcon Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:08 PM PST I am a bit sad that in these tough times for how the SC2 community views the WCS Finals and Blizzcon I think we are overlooking Darke. I know almost everyone wanted Maru or Serral or Reynor or someone else to win it, that Dark was considered a "boring" winner but his story is amazing:
Dark has had an amazing career and it culminated in a great win where he beat the best Terran and one of, if not, the top Protoss and then you have the kingslayer and prodigy Zerg in the finals, and he SMASHED them all. It wasn't close, he was just better than all his opponents that day, by a wide margin. To win it was a glorious moment by one of the best players of this expansion, one of the best Zergs of all time and it was well deserved. So when I see balance whining, production complaints and so much more (all of which are worth discussing) and the actual story line of this event is written off, that he was some patch Zerg, I'll just be here in awe of the greatness of Dark and what he finally accomplished. Sorry for this bit of a rant, I just felt lost in all these memes, complaints and discussion that Dark wasn't getting his due, guy has been the monster lurking in Korea for years now, succeeding in all patches, a guy you say "he could win this tournament" whenever you see he's qualified, consistently been a top 3 Zerg since he rose to the top of the scene. This year Dark claimed the two things he lacked, a GSL and WCS Finals win, avenging the many finals losses of his career. It may seem boring to some but Dark's story to me is a powerful one. Posted: 05 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST I'm gonna be honest here, I haven't been playing a lot of Starcraft 2 recently and i quit just prior to the post Blizzcon changes last year. Blizzard during Blizzcon this year has showed so much disrespect towards the StarCraft 2 scene and it is beyond what i could ever imagine. -The WCS Finals which is something the entire Starcraft 2 Year builds up to was finished in 1 day, during awful timezones for the finals (Must've been horrible for the players). -The production quality of the Stream was the worst it has even been. The observing was awful; missing engages and runbuys. The camera production was pretty meh aswell -Blizzard Seemingly not caring about Starcraft 2 during the opening ceremony, speeding through what they had about the game. -Blizzard not having it be a part of their tribute video. -Them taking done Sc2HLs video (this is hopefully a missunderstanding) There are probably more things I've forgotten and but I'm gonna be honest, it feels like they don't care about Sc2 at all. (These are my thoughts, and you can feel free to disagree and even prove me wrong, nothing would make me happier) [link] [comments]
