What's the best way to learn the game?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I really want to get into SC2. But I'm not sure how I should go at it. Should I play the campaign which seems a bit too easy (even on hard difficulty) or play online (and get smashed) until I get a better understanding of the game?

    Where do I learn more?

    BUG: Profile completely wiped (HALP)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:08 PM PDT

    Hello,

My buddy is having a problem when signing into SC2. When trying to sign into the client via the bnet app, his account was completely wiped. No career games, no portraits, no achievements, etc.

    Notes:

    • Whenever he signs off, and I look at his profile in SC2, I can see his old account. As soon as he signs back on, and I go back to the view his SC2 profile, I'm seeing the brand new account.
    • He has tried to exit SC2 and log back in, and also completely sign out of bnet and log back in. No luck.
    • He is NOT signed into the PTR
    • He is using the correct login credentials for this account (it's the default on the bnet app anyways)
    • He is signing into the correct region (NA).
    • There are two separate strings under his account path: "C:\Users\USER_NAME\Documents\StarCraft II\Accounts\1234567\1-S2-1-123456abc"
      "C:\Users\USER_NAME\Documents\StarCraft II\Accounts\1234567\1-S2-1-654321cba"

    - one of these is his correct account, which shows the old replays in the replay folder. And one of them shows only the replays that we've played today on his "wiped" account.

    • We have tried completely deleting the directory with the incorrect string and re-opening the game, but it reverts immediately back to the new account.
    • Something has to be triggering via the login process?

He's going to try to patch or reinstall SC2, but I'm just wondering if anybody had any ideas for this. Or as to why this is happening. In my 10 years of SC2 I have seen a lot of weird bugs, but nothing like this. He has made 0 changes on his end. We just played a few weeks ago on this account with no issues. He hasn't logged on to it since.

I'm half asleep so if any of this doesn't make sense please let me know and I can provide some clarification.

    Thanks for the help.

PSA: Don't forget the King of Battles tournament this weekend! (plus there's stuff to play in)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Thought I'd throw together a bit of a PSA on some stuff to watch and/or play in this weekend.

    King of Battles

The main event for this weekend is, of course, the $30,000 premier tournament King of Battles: KB International Championship, which will finally be kicking off the its main event Group Stage!

Beginning from 11:00 UTC tomorrow, Saturday the 3rd of October, we'll get to see Group A duke it out, with Serral and Maru facing off in the opening match and Trap and MaNa in the second match. The format is very much like in the GSL, so 5 matches will be played, with top 2 moving on to the Playoffs stage. The difference to GSL is that the 3 remaining matches after the first two are bo5 instead of the customary bo3.

On Sunday the tournament continues with Group B at the same 11:00 UTC beginning time. Same format, with the opening bo3 matches being TY vs. uThermal and Clem vs. RagnaroK.

    ----

The games will be broadcasted on the Alpha X Official Twitch, as well as the O'GamingTV Twitch (French), the IntoTheClan Trovo (Korean) and 3D!Clan Twitch (Russian)

    ----

VOD's for this tournament can also be found in the the above places as well as well as the Alpha X YouTube channel.

Tournaments to participate in (or just watch)

For all you GM at heart, there's also plenty this weekend to take part in yourself, should you like to unleash the absolute Starcraft monster within you.

First off, on Saturday, there's the Sugar 2v2 Cup #9. As one might imagine from the name, 2v2 is the name of the game, so bring a friend and get terrifying in this open for all tournament from 01:00 UTC onwards.

Later the same day, there's the Grand Platypus Open #43, again a tournament open for players of all levels, providing you're from the SEA/OCE region. Begins from 08:00 UTC.

Still Saturday, Ao Dai Weekly #54 will be played and is open for all of you from the SEA region. The proceedings begin at 12:00 UTC.

Another open for all tournament on Saturday, REGENERATE Open Weekly Cup #92 will also be happening. Please note the tournament site is in Russian. This one gets going at 15:00 UTC.

Finally, as Saturday draws to a close, there's still the Proxy Pylon Tournament #3 to play in. If you're Master 3 or anything below that, there are some noobs to smash from 17:00 UTC onwards.

On Sunday there's Legacy Weekly Japan 234 Open for any of you Japanese Starcraft fans. This one starts at 12:00 UTC.

    ----

If there's a tournament I have not mentioned here which you'd like to get some love, leave a comment for some visibility.

    ----

That was all, have a great weekend everyone!

Protoss In-Depth Guide for Diamond and Below players

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:54 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!
    Introduction:

For those who haven't heard of me, I am BeNeFiT. You've probably seen me around or heard of me if you follow Destiny Starleague, a tournament league for players 18 and younger (If you want to find more details or want to participate, hit me up). Currently as of writing this post, I am Diamond 1, 4061 MMR on the NA ladder. My ranked ftw link is here and if you take a look, you can see that this improvement is legitimate.
As the title suggests, I got from Gold 1 to Diamond 1 very quickly and I expect to get to Masters 3 very soon. So today I thought that this build is 100% worth sharing with all of you. It is an all-in and is mainly directed towards mid-diamond and below players so if this does not apply for you, you can read it for fun or skip down to the part where I explain how to defend it. And don't worry, I didn't get to Diamond 1 solely off of all-ins, I will explain how to still improve using this build to get that sweet, sweet MMR.
    Build Overview:
This is the Chargelot All-In. Yes, the nerfs on charge took it out of the meta but if used correctly, it can become another tool in your Protoss Ladder/Tournament Arsenal. There are a lot of variants out there such as the Margery explained in a video by Harstem, featured in one of ViBe's B2GM series and also showed up in 2019 Trap vs Serral, GSL vs the World. In this guide, I will be explaining from my experience only and what worked for me as I believe that in this way, it'll be easy to relate to all of you who may apply this as well.
    Part I (The Opening):
By the way, this build can be used in PvX but with each race, it will require a slight modification. But in each matchup, you will open standard up until the cybernetics core finishes. Below, I won't put the supply count or timings or anything for the standard opener but if you do not understand this, I suggest finding a video online explaining the standard build openers for each race.
    PvZ & PvT
    Pylon
    Gateway

    Assimilator

    Nexus

    Cybernetics Core

    Assimilator

    Pylon

    PvP
    Pylon
    Gateway
    Assimilator

    Assimilator

    Gateway

    Cybernetics Core

    Pylon
The units that you build during this time will depend on your opponent. In PvZ, a Stalker and Zealot work just fine. In PvT, an Adept or Stalker for the Reaper will work as well. In PvP, you really need to make sure that nothing is being proxied and there won't be any early aggression that can end the game.
The scout is super important in all three matchups. This will determine if the build is viable for use or not. In every matchup, I always scout with the probe that places the first Gateway down. This will catch 12-Pools, Cannon Rushes, and Proxy Rax early on which will let you drop the build and continue with countering this aggression or cheese. What this scout will do is determine if they are cheesing or are opening standard like you. A missing Barracks or Gateway or a finished pool is a dead giveaway that something is coming. If you see everything looking normal and then see an expansion being put down, you can proceed with the build order.
    Part II (The Tech)
In all three matchups, you will want to get Warp Gate, Twilight Council, Robotics Facility and then the Charge upgrade in that order. As soon as you have enough gas from 2 fully saturated Assimilators, get through the tech as soon as possible. As soon as charge begins, pull all of the probes off of the gas and send them to the natural EXCEPT in PvT. Keep 2-4 probes on the gas as you will need them to make Stalkers in the future. Since a Warp Prism, pylons and Zealots do not cost gas, there is no reason to be mining any more of it. While Charge is upgrading, chrono it constantly unless you see a scout coming by. In which case, let the chrono boost finish it, deal with the scout with a Stalker ASAP and then continue chrono boosting the upgrade. After you chrono boost the first time in the opener, the rest will be used on the Charge upgrade and one on the Robotics Facility for the Warp Prism.
    Part III (Warp Gates)
In the beginning phases of this build for me, I would always lose to good scouting. A flying Overlord would come into my main base and see 6 Warp Gates building and a chrono-boosting Twilight Council and immediately it's a dead giveaway that a push is coming. Instead, use the scouting probe from the beginning and send it to a corner of the map. Use this probe to proxy 4-6 gates with a couple pylons just in case. This way, a scout would only see a twilight council, a robotics facility and a couple of warp gates. Unless they really take an in-depth analysis of what all your structures equate to, they will not notice anything wrong which is why this guide is directed towards lower league players and will be difficult to execute in mid-high masters league. During this time, get up to 8 Warp Gates total and get the supply maximum to 86. Also make sure to chrono boost once a Warp Prism from the Robotics Facility. Once all of this is done, you are ready to begin your attack.
In PvP and PvZ, get 16 probes on each base so 32 workers in total. In PvT, you will want to have at least 4 probes on gas and 16 on each base making the total 36-38 probes.
    Part IV (Attacking)
This is the part that makes or breaks each match. If it's botched, it can ruin your game easily. Now before you attack, you need a ground army of about 10 or so Zealots and a Warp Prism. Without the ground force pre-made, their army will simply blotch out your Warp Prism and it'll be game over. Now what you want to do is send the Warp Prism into their main and instantly warp in all 8 Zealots. Let their army take a moment to react and while their army comes up the ramp, send the ground force to their natural. Every chance you get, get another warp-in of zealots in.
    PvT
Something that they might do is lift the supply depots to choke your zealots. In this case, either back off and finish off killing their natural or use your Warp Prism to pick up a few zealots normally and drop them on top of the SCVs and ground force that they have on the other side of the supply depots. This will instantly breach their base and in that moment, it's over. Something else that they might do is start lifting buildings and use their ground force to cross the map and base race. As soon as you see buildings lifting or before you cybernetics core is about to die in the base race, warp in as many stalkers as possible and chase down each building flying away. Do not recall any zealots in a base race scenario but instead, bring every single remaining for you have to destroy this army. Pull the probes if you have to but only until you have 400 minerals to remake a base somewhere else.
    PvZ
In PvZ, you may face either Roaches or Banelings. In the blind roaches scenario, send a squad of 5-10 chargelots and target down the roach warren while warping in more zealots when you can. If they plug their roaches into their mineral line or on the ramp, pull your zealots back and attack their third base or run into their main. The focus here is the drones. With no eco, they will not be able to defend after a few minutes. With banelings, the same response applies. Try not to clump up zealots but make sure to target down the bane nest as soon as possible and do not fight in choke points. Eventually, you will overwhelm the Zerg and win the match.

    PvP
Finally, PvP. Usually, there are only Stalkers and Immortals to deal with which zealots should be fine dealing with. If they plug themselves in a choke point or Battery Overcharge goes down, back off and don't attack again until they are vulnerable. In case of DTs, as soon as you hear that swipe of their attack, chrono boost 2 observers, one for home and one for attack, and then resume the attack. Protoss is usually the easiest race to play against because if they do not play aggressive early and are not ready for the attack, there's not much they can do.
Do not lose the Warp Prism. Do not race the queens, stalkers or marines to a warp in. If you lose the Warp Prism, the momentum of the fight is over. It is better to simply take it out of Warp mode and fly it somewhere safer than to lose both a warp-in and the prism entirely. After every warp-in, unsiege and fly it somewhere safe until you plan to use it again.
    Part V (Defending)
For the Protoss, Zerg and Terran players who are wondering how to hold this, well it will be difficult to. You need to scout and figure out what they're doing. I won't say to try to scout the proxy because in a real game, you wouldn't really know that the proxy is out there. You simply have to recognize it and understand how to respond. As a Zerg player, get spines and roaches ASAP. You may need to pull the drones as well. Cut all drones and when the attack does come, fighting only in the choke points will give you better trades and when they run away, chase them and then stutter-step back when they attack again. For the Terrans, Marines or a Cyclone can kill the Warp Prism easily if you are able to target it down. Cut all workers and produce as many units as possible. For Protoss players, zealots of your own mixed with stalkers/immortals will be your best bet. But scouting and recognizing the build will be your best bet against it. Early probe harassment is also really good whether it is a widow mine drop, an oracle or a ling runby.
    Part VI (Failures)
If the build does happen to fail, you have two options: Leave the match because you failed the build or get a third base ASAP and recover. I suggest the former because 1. You will be very far ahead if you successfully killed workers and infrastructure and 2. It's a good way to practice macro too and to play reactionary.
    Part VII (Usage)
Now how can I use this all-in without losing my macro skills and practicing at the same time? Well first, if you REALLY want to use this build for MMR points and league, you can do that but also make sure to play some reactionary games or other build orders on unranked or in custom matches against friends. Doing this every-so-often will retain your level of macro play somewhat and won't leave it in the dust. Something else I suggest doing is competing in tournaments. Much of the time, they're on weekends and if you have the time, they only take a few hours, maybe even shorter to compete in them. You get to meet new people and it's a good way to practice not only this build but other builds you found or already know. Basically, continue to play macro games every now and then and when you hit masters where the build doesn't work so much anymore, you'll still be able to play skillfully at a decent level.

    Part VIII (Analysis)
I will be updating this over time so if there is anything that needs to be added or reworded, let me know. Also, contact my Discord if you have any questions about it @ BeNeFiT#7108. Thanks so much and let me know how it works out for you if you try it!

Help a noob thread is 1 month old so I'm making my own post. Please could you explain the Game Pause mechanic?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I just had a really frustrating game where my phone rang, I went to the menu and clicked pause, and a minute later (not two minutes or longer) I saw the game had started again. I was still on the phone so I clicked pause, but immediately the game restarted. Same thing happened again and I had to let the game play out. I eventually won btw :)

Is that how the pause mechanic works? What even is the use of it if you can't take a short break? Exactly how is the mechanic supposed to work? What does it look like for the other player? Can the other player just resume the game whenever they want, or is there a timer? I tried looking on Liquipedia but I don't think it has an article on the pause mechanic. Thanks for your help.
