Starcraft War Chest Skin Reviews! Terran Units! What do you all think of them? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:46 PM PDT I want to spur some discussion and talking on this subreddit, and I decided one of the best and more unique ways is to do this is through reviewing the skins of the war chests we have seen so far. Plus, I'm really bored being stuck in lockdown and at home and I can only do so much to keep myself entertained. If this is relevant and gains enough traction I will review the others. I'll try to keep this as short and simple as possible but this is gonna be a long post. Dominion Special Forces: These ones are my personal favorite. The black and team color along with the familiar but sleeker designs is very nice. A nice mix of familiar and updated skins such as the more standard looking Marine with the Marauder. The skin set performs mostly basic updates to the base units adding a few extra armor plates, painting them black, and having a mix of campaign mercenary designs and more standard units. It's also one of the most consistent schemes and has quite high-resolution details. Otherwise, they are quite basic and very stereotypical sci-fi special forces. The dark color creates units that are fairly intimidating and the up armoring of almost all of the units adds to flare. (These are my personal favorite and I use them the most!) https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/d/df/DominionSpecialForces_SC2_Rend1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170720081318 Knights of Tyrador: Easily the most popular skins on the ladder for Terran and its pretty easy to see why. The fairly basic unit designs coated in chrome and are nice and shiny along with the high-resolution detail of the models is wonderful and easy to spot. The marine even has a more accurate rifle to the lore than the standard one. A pure gameplay benefit is the lack of "major" shifts in the designs, excluding the thor, banshee, reaper, and maybe the battlecruisers but all could be debated. The remaining units are very similar to their original counterparts, making them easy to identify in-game. I also find that adds to the charm and lore of the units, they were once simple and boring and have been given a great expensive overall to the colors and materials of the units. The blend of the team color into the skins add a nice level of flair and color to offset the chrome. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/5/5a/Tyrador_Skinset_SC2.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190815210758 Mira's Marauders: Thematically, Mira Marauders is very consistent in what has changed with the units. The units are ugly and brutal and that's their charm. Spikes, rusted metal, random bits of industrial equipment attached for good measure. It looks cobbled together, random, and very brutal-looking. Simple ideas and aesthetics create great consistency. They look utterly insane, they shouldn't work but somehow creates something that some enjoy. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/1/1a/Mira%27sMarauders_SC2_Rend1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20171209115709 The Umojan Protectorate: You remember seeing the Umojan Marines in the Heart of the Swarm cinematic and imaging what other Umojan units would look like? Yeah, this is what we got... The Umojan's have easily the weakest and most inconsistent skin set of the Terran factions. The high tech Terran Faction turned out to be very bland! I'll start positive, the Marine, Thor, Siege Tank, Banshee, and the Battlecruiser are easily the best-looking units of the army. Enough was updated on them to make the high tech and futuristic looking by Terran standards. The clean white of the Marine, Thor, and Banshee, and Cyclone are beautiful looking makes you wish the rest of the skins had followed it. Yet, now we are onto the bad! The SCV for example is simplistic, not a bad idea but its primarily teamed colored unit is in stark contrast to the other units. Furthermore, the strange choice to have some units a very light grey and others pure white makes the army look inconsistent for example the Viking vs the Banshee, one looks high tech and the other looks like mostly like a lighter grey Viking. Then theirs the Ghost or the Shadowguard as they are known in lore, it had the potential the be the best but it ended up having the lowest resolution wireframe icon and overall isn't very good looking with plenty of detail just lacking. Sadly, the Umojan's are the weakest but had possibly the most potential and creative freedoms for them. (Although, I still hold them in a special place as I love their lore and do use them on the ladder but I just think they are the weakest and most inconsistent skin set.) https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/7/73/Umojan_SC2_Rend1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180802083454 Alright, that's my rambling done! What do you all think? Do you disagree with my assessments or do you think I'm on the right track? What do you think of the Terran Skins? Let me know, lets start a discussion! What skins would you like to see in the future for Terran? Personally, I want a Raynor's Raiders and a United Earth Directorate skin set for the war chest. Would you like me to toss around my opinions on the Zerg and Protoss? [link] [comments]

New to SC and RTS, is there a definitive place to start? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:30 AM PDT Hi. I was just watching LS' stream (I think when he was in the SC community he was called LastShadow) and he was playing SC and throwing around how he used to be in the community and playing the game basically without any money. It was really interesting and watching him move at 300-400 APM was really insane. I didn't understand a second of what was going on but it looked so interesting that I instantly downloaded the game. Aside from playing age of empires 2 off a CD in early 2000s, I have basically no experience with the RTS genre at all. Is there a definitive place / resource to learn where to play SC2 so I can develop good habits and start understanding the game? This game actually looks really exciting and fun as compared to league's slow and steady leads over a long time and then one big coinflip teamfight to decide the game, and when i have 1v1 there is no team to blame or excuses to make, its just me and my own mistakes as I sit in them. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Long Post: Is /r/starcraft becoming /r/starcraftmemes? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:58 PM PDT So I've noticed that with the removal of the low-effort meme restriction, we have been inundated with quite a large number of memes. Now while I do agree that some light-hearted content is worthwhile, I think we can agree that if the front-page is only memes, pushing down all the tournament information, new SC2 initiatives within the community, strategy posts, etc. (from here on called 'serious posts', for lack of a better term) then this will ultimately lead to a lower quality community than one that can do both: support serious posts and meme material. So let's look at the front page as it stands now. Note that I use the classic reddit view which means I can see far more posts without scrolling (though do have to click to see more), while the majority of users (presumably) who use the new reddit view will have to spend more effort to see posts further down. We can see already that the first 4 posts are memes, totalling 1574 upvotes, with an average of 394 upvotes each. So lets compare that to the more serious SC2 content (I've included promotional posts in here, though some might argue they don't belong, they were none the less 6th and 7th post in order). Total upvotes: 366, with an average of 91.5 per post. Now obviously meme posts are by definition going to get more upvotes, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out with how the human psyche works to be able to consume quick, funny content much more easily than longer, more serious content. But this does mean that with an increase in memes, serious content ends up being buried even further than it was before. Now you could argue that it's possible to use RES to exclude the 'fluff' posts, so you only see serious content. The problem is most people I would argue still want some fluff, particularly the best ones available to still remain. This I think is what the low effort meme rule's intention was, to rule out the less well thought out posts, which would end up being the least funny as well (this unfortunately turned out not to be the case, hence some very highly upvoted memes were removed). The problem with not having memes at all is that the community loses part of its creativity, charm, and casual user base who may be less interested in serious posts about the game. Also, excluding yourself from the 'fluff' means you will likely miss out on references made by casters and other people in the community, such as on Twitch, since they'll at times quote something funny they saw here. Maybe that doesn't matter to some people, but communities generally benefit from having some 'inside jokes', of which fluff helps with. So what's the solution? Honestly I don't know, perhaps low effort memes are only allowed if they get a very significant number of upvotes (say 500+), so that we don't lose the top tier but also don't overwhelm the front page with medium or low tier (not effort, tier to denote quality) meme posts. But I'm not really sure. What I can say is I don't think the current state of things is desirable, and is probably going to make people think twice about posting about their $200 tournament that's running on the weekend if they see the front page covered in a sea of memes, knowing it's unlikely their tournament will get any exposure. Let me know your thoughts. [link] [comments]

What role COULD the void ray fill, that it doesn't now? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:26 PM PDT The void ray is in a weird spot, and doesn't really have a clear use case beyond defending carriers from lots of corruptors. Blizzard is trying out extra speed for them, but no one has much faith that it'll change much because the void ray still doesn't have a niche it's useful for. What could the void ray's niche be, in the protoss toolkit, if you could change it in any way and didn't have to worry about keeping its current niche? [link] [comments] |
