Co-Op Mutation #210: Call of the Void

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:25 AM PDT

Various vexing void vermin venture viciously via vents, villainously vandalizing Void Valley. Vanquish.

    Map: Void Thrashing

    Void Rifts
Void Rifts periodically appear in random locations and spawn enemy units until destroyed.
    Void Reanimators
Void Reanimators wander the battlefield, bringing your enemies back to life.

    Rating: Brutal +5

    Video Replays on Brutal:

    Player 1                                   Player 2
    [CtG (Abathur)] Iswald (Stukov)
    [CtG (Raynor)] Ancalagon (Tychus)
    [CtG (Vorazun)] Neometal (Swann)
    [CtG (Zagara)] Iswald (Artanis)
[CtG (Han and Horner)] Ancalagon (Kerrigan)
    [CtG (Karax)] Ancalagon (Fenix)
    [CtG (Abathur)] [Hunter (Karax)]

    Notes:

    • Each Void Rift has 500HP, and their spawnings are signalled by a minimap ping on each Rift.
    • The first Void Rifts spawn very close to your base, however the Rifts start to spawn further, often behind enemy lines.
    • Units that spawn from Void Rifts do not drop biomass nor essence.
    • Void Rifts tend to spawn in places where there are not a lot of enemy units, including mines, nearby.
    • A [Void Reanimator] is a ground unit that walks around the map and instantly revives a single random unit every few seconds.
    • The Void Reanimator has 200HP and 200 shields, runs around without any minimap indicator, and cares not whether you killed an enemy a minute or an hour ago. He will revive it.
    • If at any point in the game, you get a seemingly endless stream of enemies, try searching up their attack path. There are probably 2-3 Void Reanimators there.
    • Void Renimators revive enemies spawned from Void Rifts.
    • Void Reanimators do not revive Void Thrashers.
    • Up to four [4] Void Reanimators can be active on the map at any given time.

    1. If tvz and tvp are fine and pvz is ailing, why buff mostly tvz?
    2. Shield battery overcharge does... what exactly? ( Wouldn't it be easier to just chronoboost the shieldbattery : +50% efficiency & energy?)
    3. Oracle change is a nerf.
    4. Queen nerf doesn't bother anyone, except people dying to BC rushes.
    5. Widow mine buff is fine for people who never lose probes to them and the stupidest thing ever to everyone else.
    6. Nobody cares about microbial shroud until it becomes OP (So the buff is fine).
    7. Creep tumors become hellion fodder, but probably not much else.
    8. Everybody is okay with the feedback buff (terran and zerg are not scared and protoss... think something is better than nothing).
    9. queen nerf + baneling nerf + widow mine buff might be the straw(s) that broke the zerg's back (against terran).
    10. Wait...why did the baneling speed upgrade give banelings +5hp???

Ideas for a Tasteless vs Artosis Brood War showmatch

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:34 PM PDT

Reddit-Starcraft sent Marine King Prime to MLG. It paid Day9's grad school student loans. Can we set up a Tasteless vs Artosis Brood War showmatch?

I suggest we pay both of them an appearance fee, and then have the prize fund go to the charity of their choice. How much would we need to raise to get this to happen? I know casters have day rates but I have no idea how much that would be.

It would probably be online with each of them streaming on their streams, while a caster streams as well, unless someone here lives in Korea and could hold it in a PC Bang (it should be cheap to rent a few hours for a few people).

I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet but it seems like something we would all really want and would be willing to throw some money towards.

Would you like a Starcraft 3?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:11 AM PDT

Since the last SC2 expansion released almost 5 years, its possible we could get an announcement on a potential follow up in another 2-3 years. Of course this is purely speculation, but I'd like to know the community's thoughts. Would you like a follow up to SC2? What would you like to see added/changed/removed?

Is it still possible to get into Brood War MP?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 10:40 PM PDT

Quarantine got me trying the SC2 campaign for the first time after owning the game for 8 years. I'm thinking of buying SC: Remastered so I can play through it and understand who everyone actually is. I'm wondering though, is it even worth trying to get into the multiplayer at all at this point? I feel like the people who do still play it have been playing for so long that I'll just get stomped every game, and I don't know if I'd really learn much from that.

Why exactly did blizzard buff widow mines?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I'm not saying they're overpowered at the highest level, let's just get that out of the way. But widow mine drops are already the most common opener in pvt... and blizzard want's to promote diversity no? So why buff the most common opener? Another aspect, widow mines are not exactly the most fun thing to face for lower level players, seeing as you get no alert until the entire mineral line is already gone. In fact, the only time I personally ever really lose to T outside of some weird cheeses, is when widow mines devastate my entire mineral line without alerting, and I still have like 50% winrate vs T because widow mine drops are already so prevelant.

The risk vs reward of widow mines is just... ridiculous not to mention the skill required to drop widow mines vs the skill required to have constant minimap awareness to deflect them. I understand that the game is not balanced around low level players, however my main point still stands. They basically buffed the opener that was already by far the most common... and one of the least fun to play against. I don't think this is the way to fix PvT. Thoughts?

EDIT: ITT: redditors who don't know how to reddit. Downvotes aren't a fucking disagree button, so pls stop using it as such. Thanks!

Would you like to see some past SC2 maps return?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 03:06 AM PDT

Just a thought, but I had a look on Liquipedia and saw that we've had some 85 maps in LotV, 51 in HOTS, and 32 in WoL, and yet almost no map has returned to the ladder pool (I recall just one season where they did this). Seems a shame since some of the maps made for great games, such as Daybreak, Cloud Kingdom, and Tal'Darim Altar to name a few. And the maps are still perfectly usable and I'm sure took plenty of time to make by the mapmakers. Granted some maps would no longer work with our current balance, many I think would still be viable particularly if some minor adjustments can be made e.g. squeezing in a base or removing a cliff.

So what do you guys think about reintroducing 1 or 2 maps from the past in the new ladder pools? Having just a few also means if people don't like them they still have the option to veto them. But I suspect many people would welcome the idea if it's done right. What do you guys think?

Battery overcharge, and why it doesn't bring value

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:39 AM PDT

I want to talk about the newly proposed Protoss ability, Battery overcharge, and why it doesn't bring value to the early game.

First of all, taking a look at the ability itself, it essentially doubles the healing capacity of an existing shield battery over 21 seconds. Note that it doesn't affect the healing rate, only it's energy regeneration. The goal of the design behind it is to give the defender enough time to produce another round of units and repel early aggression, especially against proxy robo in the PvP matchup.

The first issue with battery overcharge is it's energy cost, which is 75, and how awkward it is to use. Aside from the cost itself, which is a lot, it directly conflicts with chrono boost usage. Chrono boost is an essential ability that ties the Protoss early game together and messing with it's timings can derail the whole build order.

Let's take a look at an example of a recent PvP game between Hurricane and Stats in the GSL. In this scenario Hurricane takes a fairly standard Nexus at 32 supply, which finished at 3:56. Stats, who has proxied a robo, already has units outside Hurricane's natural at this point and attacks at 4:10. Assuming Hurricane's position with the new Nexus ability we would have two options.

    A. Use the chrono boost to get out an immortal

    B. Save up energy to overcharge a battery

If we choose to chrono boost an immortal to help defend our base it will enter the game at 4:24.

If we decide to hold for a battery overcharge it will be first available at 4:27.

The timings are pretty similar but the results can't be more different. Option A gives us a permanent and mobile assault unit with 300 hit points. Option B gives us the potential to heal up to 300 hit points in a 21 seconds window.

On top of that, our opponent has the ability to simply disengage for the duration of the ability and then resume his attack with our immortal probably still out of position.

The cherry on top is going with the chrono boost route would enable energy to be stored sooner and make the next chrono boost available ~30 seconds earlier.

The other issue is the range restriction. It's very unintuitive to use battery overcharge because chrono boost encourages Protoss players to group their nexus energy together. The reasoning behind this restriction is to limit the amount of usage per Nexus, but this should be achieved via other methods.

This brings us to alternatives to the proposed ability. These ideas are just my opinion, but I think they follow the developers' design to buff early game Protoss defense.

    • Make the ability free of cost but give it a long cooldown. Similar to recall this would be an emergency button, but it also doesn't involve a lot of decision making.

    • Make it upgrade a shield battery permanently to 200 max energy and cost 50 energy. Similar to the Terran's calldown ability, it provides instant relief at the cost of production tempo.

    • Instead of costing energy it could cost minerals, retain it's range and involve a cooldown. This would also provide last minute relief but remove counterplay from the opponent.

I think the developers' direction to buff early game Protoss defense is correct and revolving it around the Nexus - shield battery dynamic is a good way to do it.

Looking for an old starcraft professional play clip

    Posted: 05 May 2020 02:42 AM PDT

I remember watching a League of Legends video about if the game should be changing. The main argument against not changing was how in games like Starcraft and Smash players adapt and meta changes without game itself changing. There was also a clip of a professional starcraft game, where there was this one player who had played it so long that he developed an unbeatable strategy, and all because the game wasn't changing, only players adapting.

    Does anyone know this clip/game?
