    Sign-up is here! https://forms.gle/36X5kS8nxMRiHehs9

There is also a PRIZE POOL of 50 bucks (first gets 25, second gets 15, third gets 10).

How Brood War feels like it never really happened.

    Posted: 28 May 2020 06:44 AM PDT

The Original's story was pretty solid and a lot of fun to follow.

There was a massive web of intrigue, and the decisions of each character impacts the plans and machinations of the others and it was really entertaining to see how they adapt to the change in the status quo. A great example would be the moment when Zeratul "murdered" Zasz (I like how the Overmind used the word "murdered" here).

Since the Overmind knew nothing of the Protoss, he decided to play the long game, slowly cultivating the Zerg's psionic potential with human genes in order to match the Protoss and eventually engage in total warfare. But when Zeratul had his mind linked with the Overmind, the Overmind immediately abandons the long game and struck the first blow. Why? :

    1. The Overmind now knows where the Protoss homeworld is located
    2. He also knows that only the Dark Templars are dangerous. The rest aren't of any threat.
    3. He also knows that there are no Dark Templars on Aiur due to the Aeon of Strife, which makes Aiur the safest place for him to be on as long as he can keep the Dark Templars contained on Char

Basically, things happened in the original, and they have a lasting impact :

    • Mengsk leaving Kerrigan behind -> results in Infested Kerrigan
    • The Overmind infesting Kerrigan -> leads to Raynor and Tassadar/Zeratul going to Char
    • Zeratul killing Zasz -> leads to the Invasion of Aiur
    • The Invasion of Aiur -> leads to reconciliation between Khalai and Dark Templars

Also, the status quo has changed :

    • The Terrans lost a vast majority of their population and they now have a new dictator
    • The Zerg lost their hivemind, despite being the greatest power in the sector
    • The Protoss lost their homeworld

Broodwar's story on the other hand, was lacking.

There are numerous plot holes (like way way way too many to be excused), and the story is centered around Mac Guffins :

    • Uraj/Khalis + Xel'Naga Temple
    • Psi Disrupter
    • Second Overmind

But the worst part is that nothing really happens. A bunch of things suddenly appear, and then disappear with barely any trace. It was a weird experience.

    • The UED
Appears as a new faction suddenly. Terrorized the sector for a while, and then they were defeated. There wasn't any lasting impact. Mengsk get to keep his Dominion, the Protoss didn't lose anything to them. The Second Overmind died, but it's also another case of this strange hi/bye scenarioThere's Stukov I suppose, but he's more of a reference than an impact.
    • The Psi Disrupter
Appears suddenly as a tool to pacify the Zerg. No factions/characters were affected by the Psi Disrupter in the long run. Just reappear in that one mission in Heart of the Swarm, and that's it. Would've been really useful against Amon, just saying.
    • The Second Overmind
Appears suddenly, barely did anything, gets controlled by the UED and then died. No characters/factions were harmed in the long run.Apparently the Cerebrates can't adapt themselves to a world without the Overmind despite coming from a species that excels at adaptation. Really makes you think. An insult to Tassadar's sacrifice in the original.
    • Fenix's and Duke's death
You can argue that this is something, but no one really seems to be impacted about this. Mengsk certainly didn't care that Duke was killed. Raynor was furious about Fenix's death in Broodwar but he stops caring in SC2.

The status quo barely changed :

    • Mengsk is still in power, somehow, despite losing a lot of men and resources
    • The Zerg is still the dominant power in sector, and they have a new hivemind in the form of Kerrigan, somehow. Makes no fucking sense to me. She's not a replacement Overmind, because if she was then why did the cerebrates made a new Overmind? The only cerebrate that was antagonistic to Kerrigan was Zasz, but now suddenly every cerebrate in existence opposes Kerrigan? WTF is going on?
    • The Protoss are still fucked

I suppose the most obvious evidence that "nothing happened" is the epilogue. At the end of the Original, the epilogue ends with "Kerrigan's ascension is at hand" and the end of Broodwar, Kerrigan ascension is at hand.

Also SC2 barely references any event in Broodwar. Just the Mac Guffins, and Stukov of course. SC2 is a clusterfuck too, but I'm not going to elaborate on that here.

List of plot holes in Broodwar

    1. Why is there a Warp Gate on Aiur that leads directly to Shakuras?
The Dark Templars were sent away on a giant space ship. Where the hell did these Warp Gates came from? Why didn't Adun just send them through the Warp Gates?Makes no sense if they had just "built it later", since the Conclave hated the Dark Templars and branded them as heretics. The Dark Templars were exiled if not killed, not grounded.
    2. How did the Zerg get to Shakuras before the Executor?
Didn't they enter the Warp Gate first? WTF is going on?
    3. Why did they abandoned the Uraj and Khalis in their respective locations?
If it was such a holy relic then they should've took it with them. Not leave them out in the open. Also, why can't they just produce another set of crystals? With their advanced technology I'm sure they can fabricate these crystals easily, if not mine them from the source. They managed to bypass the Uraj/Khalis requirement in SC2, so why didn't they do it before?
    4. Why didn't Aldaris just text messaged the Executor, Artanis and Zeratul?
Instead of staging an open rebellion?"Hey guys, I think there's something wrong with the Matriarch"
    5. When did Kerrigan mind-controlled Raszagal?
After the Overmind died, she was still on Char, so how the hell did she managed to mind-control Raszagal who was on Shakuras? And if she can mind-control a Protoss that easily, why can't she just mind-control Terrans the same way?If she can mind-control DuGalle then she'll have both Zerg and UED with her. But she didn't. None of this makes any sense!
    6. How did the UED found out about Aiur, the Overmind and how to control the Overmind?
These are all secrets that are known only to the Protoss, Zerg and Raynor's men.Reminder that the Protoss only found out about the Overmind after Zeratul killed Zasz, and the location of Aiur vice versa. So how did the UED get hold of this information?
    7. Why didn't the Confederacy used the Psi Disrupter when the Zerg attacked Tarsonis?
    8. Why did DuGalle believed Duran over Stukov?
Reminder that the UED are racist towards these filthy inferior penal colony descendants, and that Stukov is his best friend and vice-admiral.
    9. Why didn't the UED reverse-engineered and built more of the Psi Disrupters?
Or at least stationed more defenses down there for Pete's sake!

Well that's all I could think of for now.

    State of casting

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:36 PM PDT

I love Starcraft. I love the tournaments and the casters. This isn't to bop anyone but every time I watch gsl, I love the casting even though Artosis and tasteless get off topic a lot, it's still entertaining as hell. Wcs I pretty much like every caster at that event and it doesn't even matter the combo of casters that cast the game since they switch off. But for the love of god I just want to watch Wardiii stream these awesome tournament on his twitch but why oh why does he just solo cast? I turn it off after 10min, it's just so stale. Now I actually admire Wardiii a lot especially since he has really been doing a lot for the game and the players so this isn't meant to be a rude gesture, and I might not have patience and he HAS had other casters come on. But I can only get into about 10min of a game and just hearing one person cast is just completely different and I wish he'd have other casters join him. Even if they are just other players and not necessarily professional casters. Adding that second person just makes it so they can go back and forth and engage in the game more rather than just hearing one monotone voice the whole time. This will probably get downvoted but whatever.

Parting 10 minutes mark push from both players's perspective (GSL 2020 Ro4)

Does anyone know the mock tutorial video poking fun at starcraft 1 and RTS games in general?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 02:53 PM PDT

It starts with a guy giving a tutorial on how to play a made up RTS and it is comically convoluted (along the lines of: "okay now we have to turn on worker upwards movement in the command centre so that our workers can return the resources to the base")

This goes on for a while and then he gets rolled by a mass of hydralisks looking units shouting in Korean and the video ends.

I saw it a long time ago and have been trying to find it the last few days with no luck.
