24th of February-1st of March 2020 IEM Katowice Global Event

Exciting and different year for Starcraft! The WCS system has officially been removed and replaced as of January of this year. As of now the new SC2 esports circuit is a combined creation of 4 Dreamhack SC2 Masters Tournaments and 2 ESL Pro Tour Starcraft 2 events as well as weekly competitions that will feed into ESL events.

The landscape of Starcraft E-Sports this year:

Region 1: Rest of the World, which is now called the EPT (ESL Pro Tour) Circuit.

    • Four DH SC2 Masters events awarding points.

    • Regional Qualifier tournaments seed into the DH SC2 Masters events.

    • Online Weekly tournaments provide additional points every Sunday.

Region 2: Korea which is now called EPT (ESL Pro Tour) Korea

    • Three seasons of Global StarCraft II League (GSL) and two seasons of Super Tournament awarding points.

GSL * The Global StarCraft II League is organized by AfreecaTV, and operates as follows:

    • Code S has TBD format.
    • Three GSL seasons in the EPT 2020/21, as in WCS 2019.
    • The events award EPT Korea points and seed the winner directly into the Global Finals.
    • Super Tournament
    • The AfreecaTV GSL Super Tournaments organized by AfreecaTV, and operates as follows:
    • Super Tournament consits of a 16 player single-elimination bracket.
    • Two events in the EPT 2020/21.
    • The events award EPT Korea points.

    The Global Events:

Besides the IEM Katowice 2020, the ESL Open Cups and IEM Katowice 2021, TBD will reunite players from both regions.

    Masters Championship 2021

    • ESL Pro Tour 2020/2021 - Global Finals Format
    • At the end of the year, thirty-six players qualify to the Masters Championship 2021.
    • The winner of the global events IEM Katowice 2020 and IEM China 2020.
    • If a player should win both IEM events then there will be one more seed from the Play-In stage.
    • The winners of the three GSL seasons and the four DH SC2 Masters events.

    With EPT points:

    • EPT Korea: 6 seeds from the standings (+1 for every GSL winner that already has a slot)
    • EPT Circuit: 5 seeds from the standings (+1 for every DH SC2 Masters winner that already has a slot)
    • The Top 4 from the offline Play-In Stage at the event.
    • 8 players from Korean Standings (Top 8 that are not yet qualified for Ro24) and 8 players from Circuit Standings (Top 8 that are not yet qualified for Ro24) qualify for the Play-In Stage.

This info was referenced from Liquipedia: https://liquipedia.net/starcraft2/ESL_Pro_Tour

Instead of WCS points, in the circuit, and global scene we will now have both the IEM and Dreamhack events utilizing what they call ESL Pro Tour Circuit Points for the EPT Circuit scene. EPT Korea (The GSL and Afreeca events) will gain EPT Korea points Points as well as Global points for the EPT Korea scene.

Idra was right - How Florencio and I killed armies with hallucinated units

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 09:10 PM PST

There is a bug with hallucinated units that allows them to deal damage to units with negative armor (see here for original post). In ladder games, as far as I know, this can only be achieved using anti-armor missile.

Short version is that hallucinated units can deal 3 damage from AAM, plus their attack upgrades. This ends up being surprisingly strong considering that means +3 hallucinated units can deal 6 damage. With colossus splash, 10 sentries worth of hallucinations can take out 100 marines without upgrades. Also important to note is that hallucinated units deal damage to Protoss shields and health at the same time, making archons trivial to kill even with hallucinated probes (which are actually kinda OP. I mean you get 4 of them, WTF?)

So naturally, Florencio and I took to ladder to abuse this as much as possible, and the result is this 2v2 game. In it, we take out lots of T3 units like tempests out with just hallucinated units, probes trivially mow over archons, and lots of immortals fall to hallucinations. Overall, it shows the hallucination bug is a lot stronger than you'd think, considering the 3 base damage

Given a bit more practice and coordination, this strat could actually work out much better. It would never be viable, but it makes mass sentry memes a whole lot stronger

TL;DR - Idra was right all along

Reminder (like you guys forgot): IEM Katowice begins tomorrow!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:25 PM PST

Tomorrow is the first day of IEM Katowice, with offline qualifier brackets #1-2 played. This means players like SOS, HEROMARINE, NEEB, INNOVATION, SPECIAL and SOO duking it out, in what's sure to be an epic day of Starcraft II!

For further memory refreshment, here are the brackets on Liquipedia.

Full list of streams at the bottom of this page on the same site.

    Official site.

The hype train to Awesome by the scenic route of Kick-Ass has arrived at the station, all aboard!

    The train leaves the station at 11:00 CET/ 12:00 EET/ 19:00 KST/ 18:00 CST/ 02:00 PST / 05:00 EST.

EDIT1: I mentioned DRG as a player attending, originally, but have since found out he forfeited. Marsman, a Protoss player from the Netherlands has taken his spot and is thus Clem's first opponent.

EDIT2: It's brackets 1-2, I originally somehow saw it as being 1-3. My apologies for the mistake.

EDIT3: Added the start time for Katowice's timezone CET.

Covid-19 might mean travel restrictions on Korean players

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 02:30 PM PST

So, the latest news from South Korea is that they've just raised their threat alert level to maximum. This means, in effect per the linked article, that

officials can now restrict public transportation, flights to and from South Korea, bar tourists, lock down cities, and close schools.

I don't believe they'll start implementing any of the more drastic stuff (like restricting outbound flights) just yet, so I doubt that this will have any effect on Katowice. However, with the Covid-19 epidemic so far showing no signs of slowing down, it looks like there's a real threat now that the local government may soon start implementing some of the more extreme measures to try and contain the disease. We're getting closer to GSL with no live audience and, in the worst case scenario, the Korean pros being barred from flying and thus being unable to attend offline events outside of their country for a while.

It looks like we may be close to a scenario now, where offline events planned for the next couple of months may start getting affected by this epidemic, or even further so, as in the case of WESG. Let's hope that we're getting near the peak of this thing.

How do you feel about GG or no GG?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2020 12:23 AM PST

It's probably not my place and not the place to ask, but I do feel there is a lot to it. Please provide your personal experience in the reply. I am completely neutral towards all strats and have tried my best to word the questions accordingly. You are not obligated to introspect if you don't feel comfortable to so please don't give non-answers, just not participate instead.

    1. If your opponent says GG before leaving, do you respect them more, or do you unconsciously dismiss them as an irrelavent, egoless noob
    2. If your opponent doesn't say GG and leaves, is there a very slight feeling that something you did might've seemed much to them, or is there a very slight feeling of anger because they seem to disregard the result of a fair match
    3. If you say GG even though you feel that the match was not fair, and you are only doing so for your personal standard of conduct, does it make you feel better or worse about the match
