Anyone get frustrated enough with the SC2 ladder to just, well, stop playing it? Way more than you should with a 'game'?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:03 PM PST

Most people who have played it will say that SC2 is a very good game. I am one. It is a good game. Playing the 'ladder', moreover, can foster a sense of healthy competition and even make you 'addicted' to the game in a relatively good way. However, I recently got to a point where I felt I had little choice but to delete the game. It wasn't a tough decision; it was an easy one. I don't plan on playing it again. Before I did this, I watched a bunch of videos (Vibe's B to GM series was the series I watched the most) and tried to get better. I did get better after a while. I made it to almost Gold, which I know a lot of players will think is a joke, but it meant something to me at the time. I won a lot, I lost a lot, I won a lot, I lost a lot, and so on. Eventually, however, the joy of the victories became less overpowering than the disappointments over the losses. I would get angry, upset, because in everything else in life, it seemed to me, the more you work at it the better you will get at it. This is surely true of SC2, but it didn't feel true to me, in my limited perspective, at the time. Something felt off. I got sick of competing and competing and competing over time. I got sick of the losses (which were, granted, counterbalanced by wins). The whole affair became less of an excitement and more of a slog. I would be put in a bad mood after losing, and even the good mood I enjoyed after winning became increasingly more of a neutral mood, or a mood that made me feel anxious lest I lose the spot I just gained (which happens ALL THE TIME). There is also the very important fact that there are no real rewards - or at least, rewards that last - in this game, for most people. As soon as you go up a tier, you play opponents harder than you played before. So you have no time to appreciate what you've accomplished. It's as if you get pushed right back to the beginning every time you take a step forward. Not to mention all the learning you have to do, and practice, and upkeep, and diligent attention to tutorials, and new playings styles and so on. I know this is how life works. You have to keep doing something to get better at it. So I'm not saying there's anything wrong with SC2 or the people who play it (obviously). It's just that, in my own case, I started to have difficulty drawing the line between 'fun' and 'labour', and I don't recall ever playing a game when this phenomenon happened quite to the extent it did in SC2. So I suppose I'm wondering if anyone else feels or felt the same way - whether it led to you to delete the game, like me, or to take a long, long break. Thanks! See you. JC

Starsense is back from Hibernation: Predict the outcome of Starcraft tournaments

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:40 PM PST

Hello guys, lets say the important part first: Starsense is back after ~4 years of Hibernation and you can get it here for Android!

The older subscribers to this subreddit may remember me maybe. Back then I made a free Android app with Toby for predicting the outcome of Starcraft tournaments. I already reconnected with some of you on Twitter and it feels good to be back :)

Lately I got a lot of extra time on my hands because of the Coronavirus and so I decided to bring the app back not only for me but to also keep some of you busy. It took me like two days to get all back running and currently you can predict:

    • ASl Season #10 3th Player Match (Flash playing Random still amazes me to no end!)
    • ASL Season #10 Finals
    • Into The Alpha X - Pro Circuit #4 (If you guys read that I'd like to ask if I could use any of your assets for a Banner, wrote you on Twitter!)

I'm currently looking to add new tournaments but haven't decided on any yet. Feel free to propose tournaments you would like to see.

If you haven't heard about this project yet you probably wonder what you can do with the app. Here is a quick list:

    • Predict the outcome of events including various group-stages and playoffs.
    • Gain experience points by making correct predictions which translate to rank titles that can be compared with other users on the leaderboards
    • Leaderboards for seasons (A season is a timeframe that includes various tournaments)
    • Win prizes by making it to the top of the leaderboard (Current prices are TBA but you can expect stuff like ingame Starcraft2 content including Coop heroes and announcer packs)
    • Get notifications when a tournament is about to start one hour in advance.
    • Aligulac is integrated, with a long tap on a players name you can see information about your favorite Starcraft2 players (You can test that with GSL 2020 Season#3 that is included for historical purpose and to show of some features)
    • Use an "API" for showing current player predictions live

Finally let me say that I had to upgrade many of the parts to conform to todays API levels and standards so there may be bugs I'm not aware yet especially on new devices. Also I'm sorry but there is no IOs version, we tried hard to get it work last time but it didn't work out since I couldn't do it myself because of missing hardware (Apple products are expensive :O).

    HAARPER made a Starcraft song??

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:53 PM PST

Probably not everyone's taste, but this rapper Haarper made a bunch of Starcraft references in his newest song "Archon." I've listened to a lot of his music and have never noticed any have a gaming theme, so it really caught me by surprise lol the 3rd verse has the most references. Hope a few of you enjoy!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3mLfJgnVTQ&ab_channel=HAARPER

Lyrics as posted by the artist:

Freeze like ice, see the scythe

Watch it reflect right past your life

Tickin down the time until I commit to the crime

Im comin with the fuckin shine like hiten mitsurugi right up above the alley

When you with your bitch named sally

Make her turn sides for the d on an addy

    Crush em like adderall

Stomp on their grave 'till I wake em

    What you gon do?

    Bones gon rot to stew

If I ever fall I bounce back majin

Motherfuckers shit, they soft like charmin

Summon hurricanes, like a god or shaman

You a damn pest like a fly on my ramen

Fissure yo face like adios cya

Temple gon break on yo break in

Korea Ima make it clear, chandelier on ya soul

No face like sia when they see the whole crow

    Target identified, target acquired

The Stargate gon open, my army dont tire

Komodos in armor, the blade be of Aiur

Burn em to char in their car with my fryer

They cannot sleep while I stalk in the Creep

Aint no proto with the pick, I pick em petty in the street

They aint ready for the swipe, Zeratul in flight

Fearing the emission of the green at night

    Emerald archon, im the emerald

    Ill break yo dental

Im too far gone, at the central

    I pay no rental

In yo mind I, I Push the pedal

I never settle, pour the kettle

    StarCraft2 ladder population statistics

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:38 AM PST

    StarCraft2 ladder population statistics

I was not able to find all the stats I wanted in the web, so I compiled my own stats using the official Blizzard API. Here are the results. Feel free to suggest some stats you would like to see(that are not in the net already).

    1v1

    Player count(per day)

    https://preview.redd.it/ezya9pleh8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=74a09d3b1c8914c52bc263f17fed8295759c5208

The numbers in this section are the actual player counts(not a team count). What is the difference? A player can have multiple teams or play in multiple regions at the same time. The numbers here are significantly lower than you could find in the web for this exact reason.

I calculated the player base freshness stats following these simple rules:

    1. When a player plays his first ever game(in a bracket) he counts as new
    2. In any other case he counts as old

Example: Player decides to play his first ever 1v1 game in season 30. He than retires and comes back in season 40 with a few more games. Result: new player in season 30, old player in season 40.

The new player stream is slowly declining over the time with 2 noticeable positive bumps(f2p and covid?).

    Activity tiers

    https://preview.redd.it/b4fovp4kj8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6097ddbfb478d5f6478dbb4f23f83e83e8b4275

Player count by games played per day

    • Low: less than 0.3 games per day(~1 game in 3 days or less)
    • Medium: 0.3-1 games per day (~1 game in 1-3 days)
    • High: more than 1 game per day

The core player base is small and stable. Who could have thought?

    League distribution

    https://preview.redd.it/coysyexyj8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=5028d7f631879273db66875676fa25e496f6f5f7

    https://preview.redd.it/e11dx4svj8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=94bed714be65221cb8641ac85027c721480c9099

Grandmaster, master and diamond leagues have a higher games played/team count ratio.

    Misc

A bunch of basic stats. You probably have seen these numbers before on some well-known sites. Showing them to provide more context.

    https://preview.redd.it/v0btgy4s88x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=45784d24e75ba2fda391b1eca018b38b6193340e

    4v4 arranged team

Arranged 3v3 and 4v4 brackets have some interesting stats too.

    https://preview.redd.it/50z6m4tgm8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=074a8b3ad29c00c5e8c7794db5b84fc752f2acdc

    https://preview.redd.it/6zkbtjnim8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9c34d5d453ef7f33d1de4a70fd9d0fa5863cb2a

    https://preview.redd.it/umlwr3ekm8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=49274605c55bcb41e5f98030a787b85b0b80ada8

    https://preview.redd.it/ur091lylm8x51.png?width=555&format=png&auto=webp&s=e13b0a421b6c3daeb13d3faae29610f3410e5d7c

As you can see, these brackets have a huge activity boost starting from season 43. A big surge of new NA players that are actually fairly active.

    Q&A

Q: The first season is 29. Why?

A: Its the oldest season that could be fetched from the official API.

Q: Why some stats are per day(player count)?

A: Event though the recent season duration is somewhat stable, the older seasons are quite volatile in this regard. The graphs will be misleading in terms of dynamics.

Q: Why kr region is dead in season 45?

A: The official API is dead for kr region atm.

Q: Why the player count graphs go down while players per day goes up?

A: Per day population stats are always inflated for the current season. A player needs to play only one game to be included in the stats.

    ESL reruns and adbreaks

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:16 AM PST

I was watching the ESL rerun of DH Masters (MaNa vs. ShaDoWn - DH Masters: Winter 2020 - Group A - EU). The game was going back and forth and Mana was gaining an edge. Suddenly three ads started playing. I was confused for a bit (because I have my chat closed most of the times, I didn't see the small window on the side) went to chat to ask a question, realized it was follower only. Followed the account, but couldn't talk for 10 minutes. Ads finish and I see an ESL screen which says commercial in progress (after 3 1-minute ads have already completed). This screen stays on for a bit. I thought the game is over and the ads played at an inopportune time, but this screen went away and were dropped back into the game and it is still going on.

This makes for a very poor viewer experience. I fully understand the need for the ads and I am happy to see it - as long it doesn't start bang in the middle of an interesting moment. Wait for the game to end and run it between games.
