How would you feel about the IEM Katowice global finals being online?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:42 PM PST

Hey, I just had the thought that it's getting awfully close to the 2020 global finals and Covid doesn't really seem to be going away soon.

So I was just wondering what you opinion on the titled matter is, maybe even to give ESL some kind of direction if they haven't made up their minds by now anyway.

Having an online finals to an online year is probably not too unfitting, although it would still suck big time. And to be more specific, would you rather have the 2020 finals moved deep into the summer of 2021 to take place offline, presumably starting the DH Spring 2021 before the 2020 finals even, or just swallow the pill and move past 2020 as the full online year?

Have you tried Age of Empires II?

The AoE2:Definitive Edition has gotten a lot of traction in the past year, which somehow also reached Winter - that's how I got intrigued to check it out initially.

As a teen I played couple of games in school, but never really understood and appreciated the game. Having played few games and having developed a deeper understanding of it recently, I must say it's quite similar to SC2.

What I like about it that you have let's say 35 different commanders for the single Human race. The different commanders play similar enough that you can go random and use the ca. same 8 competetive build orders (with a little variation ofc) to your way up the ladder.

One more nice thing is that the focus of your attention changes from microing your macro to microing your units over the course of a game. In the start you have to be very active to get your economy timings right. After a while, the economy manages far easier and is partly automatic, requiring less attention from you. There are plenty of resource nodes in your starting area, so you are not forced to expand for a good chunk of time. You can use this precious time later on to micro your units instead, which is very important and turns the tide of battle easily. (And, yes, it's possible to turtle until some point, however later on you will be easily chipped away by siege units).

The combat feels a bit different to SC2, s units are slower and actions are more deliberate. There are almost no spell casters, so battles are won by proper positioning and having the right set of counter units to your opponents, which deal drastically more damage to units they counter.

Wrapping things up, I'm enjoying the game and would like to pique your interest to watch it for a bit or try it out yourself. In my opinion, if you are plat / dia or below, it feels less stressful and APM demanding and rewards you more for tactical play than mechanical skill (read: one base vs eco, which units to build to counter, etc). Having said that, for the purists, individual skill and min/max potential, it doesn't come close to SC2 in higher eschelons of play. Furthermore, SC2 Coop is king, if that's your poison.

    random team mmr

    Posted: 13 Nov 2020 02:54 AM PST

Can someone explain how random teams are formed?? I just played a 4v4 where my team was platinum, platinum, gold, silver, and the other team was 4 masters. All of them had APMs that were over twice the highest on our team. We got completely destroyed.

How could that matchup possibly even happen? Wouldn't 2 masters and 1 platinum on each side be obviously much more evenly matched?

I always assumed it would just take everyone's mmr and split them by that. Highest on team A, next highest on team B, next on team A, etc. Clearly that's not the case.

I have beat all 19 campaign legacy of the void but cannot play the Into the void missions. Still says the legacy of the void missions must be complete, BUT they are, WTF? Does anyone have an explanation? I have 54% of achievements complete. Thanks for reading
