    My journey in Starcraft II

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:33 PM PDT

    My journey in Starcraft II

It all began about 9 years ago, when my dad and brother bought CD copies of a new RTS game, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty. I was probably 4 years old at the time, having pretty much no experience with other games, I watched my dad and brother play Starcraft II and got absolutely dumbstruck on how complex and beautiful it was... So many strategies, plans, and variables! It really blew my mind.

My dad and brother, then, showed me the game, explaining the basics and simplifying a lot things. At that point I got very interested, and my dad authorized me to play a bit under his supervision, a few missions of the campaign.

I loved the game, it was absurdly complex for me, don't get me wrong, I played every mission on casual and even lost sometimes...

1-2 years later I began understanding more of the game, learning more complex stuff, like upgrades and abilities. At this point I had beaten the campaign in normal once or twice. Then in 2013~ I started playing against real players. Long story short, I got my ass whooped many times, by bronze and silver players.

I continued playing casually and for fun for quite a few years, I was getting noticeably better but not significantly.

In 2014~ I got to gold, I was approximately 8 years old at the time.

I continued learning, playing, practicing for a few more years.

If I remember correctly it was about 2016-2017 when I first got to platinum.

In 2018 I got promoted to diamond 3 and started taking the game a bit more seriously. Practicing more, learning more, and watching pro player games.

I hit diamond 1 in the start of 2020, I was devoting quite a bit of time and effort into the game. Learning specific build orders against specific matchups, etc.

And finally now, after over 1500 games as terran... In late 2020, after putting so so so so much effort into the game, I got to masters, one of my biggest life achievements so far.

I wanted to share this story with you, the reader, so hopefully if you play, you don't get demotivated, because you're taking too long to get better at the game, It's a slow process and many times it will take years, or even in my case, almost a decade (being almost more time than I currently already lived!).

I also want to give a huge thanks to the content creators like: Lowko, Winter, Beasty, Harstem and many more that I'm sure I missed; to the community and my many kind opponents that gave me tips to improve. Really, thank you all for everything.

    Good Luck and Have fun;

Flash To Win (FTW) chance calculator + Chance to get Terran X times in Y matches

Flash To Win (FTW) chance calculator + Chance to get Terran X times in Y matches

    Hey there :)

This post was inspired by SayianSC's latest video on a game between Flash and Soma, where at some point he said that it will be useful to have the chances for Flash to get Terran for example 2,3 or 4 times in his upcoming bo7 against Soma in Sunday's ASL.

Initially I went for the task with the intention to create a really simple excel table using binomial distribution with the chances for him getting respectfully 0 to 7 times terran in the upcoming matchup. I'm attaching a screenshot of the initial table:

    My version

After that I communicated it to my girlfriend which excels in excel to say the least and she went even further (tbh she helped with the initial table as well :D). We've added additional functionality, where based on the expected winrate of his matchups we get the general chance for him to win the whole series. Additionally, we've added the option to dynamically set the results of the matches during the series and be able to see the expected chance for him to win at the end.

Here's a screenshot of the final result done by her :D

    My gf's version

In the final version, you can do the following:

    • Get the chance for Flash (a random player) get terran (a specific race) atleast X times in Y games
    • Set the expected winrate based on his race and get the general expected winrate from the series*
    • The chances of Flash to win the series by game X, which dynamically updates after you input the score from the games

We (she)'ve made also a google sheets copy of the table at this adress - you can download it as a local copy and play with the numbers.

I hope someone finds this interesting and that you get less jealous than I'm proud of her :D

If you have any recommendations (I have some ideas on my own) let us know in the comments. Thanks for your time.

*The default winrates that I've used are 70% for Flash's T (as his latest ASL TvZ winrate) and 20% for his P and Z, based on Soma's record of 80% winrate in ASL in the matchups. To be honest, that's not the fairest representation (it would've been better if we had accurate stats for Flash's other matchups and also to use put as a % a function of his and Soma's winrate) - I'd definetely go for something like 70/35/35 which gives Flash 47% chance to win (that makes me pretty happy, as I'm actually rooting for him in the series - as he is God. Q.E.D)

I'm new to ranked, not very good and was wondering since this is such an effective strategy in low ranks how can I beat is as a Terran main? Most people say don't let it get to that point but is there a real way to counter them?
