PiG here, with a story about one of our SC community brothers' struggle Posted: 05 Aug 2020 02:17 PM PDT Hi Reddit, it's PiG here, Today I'd like to introduce you to a long-standing community member you might not be familiar with. His name is Thor. He's been playing SC2 since day 1 and even created his own team. Thor has played 23000 games of Starcraft 2. Thor has no build order vs protoss and almost always loses to them, but he loves meching his way to victory in TvT and TvZ. He also calls himself a "giant noob", yet hit masters 3 in 2016 and still chills at 4k MMR today. Only in Starcraft would such a self-effacing attitude be right at home. Thor and his wife had a baby boy named Ruzgar (wind) last year, and unfortunately he was born with SMA - Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This is a genetic disease that causes alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord to die, resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy. The outlook for living with this condition is one of insane difficulty - and Ruzgar has Type 1 - the worst kind, with the majority of those diagnosed not surviving beyond 4 years. Thankfully there is a new breakthrough treatment Zolgonesma, essentially it's a one-time IV injection that provides copies of the protein that maintains the health of motor neurons. With this replacing that, the neurons stop decaying and the infants can develop as normal. Unfortunately it's incredibly expensive. Including hospital costs it comes in at 2.3 million USD. Many of us can't even imagine a sum that large, but Thor loves his son, and is willing to do anything to give him a chance at life. He's worked his ass off to gather every cent he can, borrowing and raising funds with every waking moment. His family have pitched in and helped spread the word and he's already gained large support, getting up to 1.9 million, leaving them 400 thousand USD short. It's at this point that Thor reached out to me on Discord. Sharing the story of his son being diagnosed at 1 month and the crazy journey he's been on since then. His insomnia and stress, and how he'll stop at nothing to try and give his son a chance. We chatted about the joy this game has given him over the years, and how even now when his mind is racing he can find a moment of solace in watching this beautiful game. Thor and Ruzgar's story struck a chord in me. A perfect example of how cruel this world can be, and how terribly insurmountable some challenges can seem. Yet the way Thor and his wife have devoted themselves to making this treatment happen, it's reminded me of the insane potential we have when we set our minds to something. And it's reminded me that we as a scene can make a difference as well. I'm here sharing Thor's story because I see a lot of our community in him. The hardcore community that's been here since day 1 and has never left. Even when we take a break we always come back to the greatest game on earth. We fight hard, we love watching the pros, and we learn life lessons in this incredibly difficult game. I'm hoping I've managed to share a piece of who Thor is in this community, and inspired you to join me in trying to help give Ruzgar a chance. A chance at a normal and healthy life. A chance to walk, grow and hopefully one day hit that "find match" button. I doubt we'll close the 400K gap ourselves - but every little bit will help and with Thor and his wife reaching out to many different communities, I'm hoping that combined we can make this a reality. Posted: 05 Aug 2020 08:04 PM PDT My partner and I have been together for ten years, off and on. Recently, he found that he was happier finding random partners online. To his credit...he's really found himself and progressed. I saw a video recently and...I just wish I could have seen this side of him. I'm a proud Terran...but I'm willing to go Protoss for him. The only thing is...I just don't think he wants me anymore, personally, race aside...and I'm not sure how to move on. I'm thinking about quitting. Reddit...what do I do? I'm heartbroken. edit: I think he's all about the macro and I'm just a micro guy. I think we're totally compatible but I can't deny the facts...together we're gold but apart...he's a plat random. I think it's over. [link] [comments] | ||||

GSL Code S 2020 S2 | Ro4 | Day 1 | Rundown Posted: 05 Aug 2020 05:07 AM PDT This is what it's all about, Ro4 time in the GSL! Semifinal #1 | Rogue vs DRGThere's almost nothing better in this day and age than somehow ending up with a match that has no relevant history behind it. Rogue and DRG had played each other barely if ever in the past and specifically since the veteran's return from the military these two hadn't met in a real series. In a world where most of the time we feel like we already know what's going to happen thanks to a rich history alone, this hopeful little detail felt exciting. So what could possibly be the main problem here? Big Time Jin Air players getting in the way of sexy underdog stories. Rogue in particular wins trophies for fun, provided he survives the early stages of a tournament, of course. To be more specific, the Jin Air Zerg had achieved a perfect 7-0 in Bo7s coming into today with the only one of those that wasn't a championship being his absolute destruction of Dark in the S3 Semis just after the other Zerg had won the Code S trophy the Season prior. In other words, regardless of the prowess DRG had shown so far specifically against the best Terran players in the world, he would now have to deal with the worst possible draw for himself specifically considering the Zerg's record in the mirror. Worse still, if a team league hypothetically kept going in Korea there's no doubt in my mind Rogue would be the designated ZvZ sniper on any team. In other words, aside from the power of nostalgia and belief in the face of a missing player history, DRG unfortunately had very little realistically going for him. Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously Extending his streak in a classic display of complete domination from start to finish, Rogue showed up today in all his terrifying glory.
