    GSL Code S 2020 S1 | Ro16 | Group B | Rundown

    Posted: 09 May 2020 05:15 AM PDT

They say "Group of Death" is in the eye of the beholder, however there are days when it feels inarguable coming into it.

    Group B:

    • Living Legends with four Finals yet only one Code S trophy between them: TY, Stats

    • Dark Horses looking to set off on the path to taking theirs: Cure, Solar

You can tell things aren't going to be simple for anyone when there's no designated punching bag in a Group, meaning literally anyone could get out in any place without exaggeration. TY did look phenomenal in the Ro24, however that was basically the only time he'd truly performed so far in 2020 and while Stats didn't really show his peak form the Wall of Aiur did moonwalk into 1st place for his Group as well regardless. Couple those monsters with Solar - who didn't even have to play the previous round thanks to his placing at the Super Tournament - and Cure that started cold but then kept ramping up until he destroyed everyone left in front of him & his ever present potential waiting to be unleashed... how would you even go about predicting anything tonight?

    Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously

In an only slightly shocking turn of events, Cure somehow won the Group in record time, smashing through Stats like it was nothing and then out-TY-ing his long time nemesis in order to secure 1st place with a flawless record today.

After establishing no series could be good tonight, TY nevertheless had enough in the tank to outlast Stats in M5 after a few close calls, however having to settle for 2nd certainly must have felt worse than usual when looking at who's up next for him now.

    M1 | TY [ 2 : 0 ] Solar | ★☆☆☆☆ | LOL

    • Ever Dream | I'm not making this up, not only did TY proxy four Barracks on his opponent's map pick just outside the scouting Overlord's vision, the mad lad then floated them into the Zerg main. Solar did his best to scout everywhere other than the places he needed to check, so when a few too many Marines showed up out of nowhere against the "blind" three Hatch opener it was all over.

    • Golden Wall | As if not to be outdone, the Zerg tried responding with his own cheese, namely by going for a two base Lair into Nydus with an initial Worm placement on the single dark pixel inside the Terran's main, however TY not only scouted the lack of third Hatch he then also had a Medivac and around a billion Stim Marines ready to greet Solar's Roaches and Queens on arrival, annihilating the attack and securing the outcome of the game on the spot with another pure build order win.

    M2 | Stats [ 0 : 2 ] Cure | ★★☆☆☆ | Ter-ran-over

    • Eternal Empire | After that train-wreck of a series, things were initially looking up with standard Blink vs Drilling Claws drops featuring some vintage rock solid Stats defense, during which even the 7 Probe kills didn't feel that bad as the harassment tools were destroyed with them and then the Protoss just denied his opponent's third CC from landing for what felt like an eternity. From there, however, Stats kept warping in Gateway units and trying to find an angle to attack from, but there wasn't a single crack in Cure's armor which meant trouble for the Protoss. Not long after the Terran broke the hold, his macro spiraled out of control and army marched across the map to not only cancel the fourth Nexus but then also take a monstrously one-sided fight where the mostly Gateway force backed up by just a few Templar simply couldn't stop him.

    • Ever Dream | Channeling his inner Liquid, it was then proxy time for Cure as he put down the Barracks, Factory and Starport in the middle of the map and to make matters even better for him Stats was going for a proxy Stargate. While the Protoss discovered the Terran "base" eventually and his Oracle did get some SCV kills, Cure's push and Tank Liberator siege was simply unstoppable, making this yet another bop.

    M3 | TY [ 0 : 2 ] Cure | ★★☆☆☆ | Someone Check The Nameplates

    • Eternal Empire | Despite an interesting difference in the openers, nothing really happened until TY's Raven killed 9 SCVs as his third CC was coming up and Air superiority was being established. Cure tried moving across the map to answer that aggression but was met with a brick wall both on the ground and in the sky, so he had to go back. From there you would think TY would completely dictate every action on the map, but shockingly you would be wrong. Cure not only somehow sneaked in an attack on his opponent's third CC, he actually sniped it and was keeping up in the macro game. At around 13 minutes all hell broke loose as both players ran into each other's defenses and somehow Cure again came out on top, in no small part due to his upgrade lead. From there the underdog got more expansions, kept picking off bases and eventually reached 3/3/3 upgrades vs only 3/2/1 for TY, making it so when Cure pulled off a mini Doom Drop into his opponent's main while also killing off the fourth base, TY finally assessed the situation accurately and tapped out accordingly.

    • Nightshade | The three Reaper two proxy Barracks from Cure up next was incredibly clean, with a full wall back at home to deny his opponent's scout so when TY decided against the notion he was getting rushed it only took a little bit of finesse for Cure to pick off the couple of units his nemesis had out, after that it was an easy SCV massacre to secure the 2-0 for the underdog.

    M4 | Stats [ 2 : 0 ] Solar | ★☆☆☆☆ | It Is Your Birthday.

    • Simulacrum | By this point it was clear the day was going to hell already, which made Solar's decision to put down the Bane Nest and flood Lings feel quite appropriate. Unfortunately for him, Stats had a Stalker in the wall already and after some pretty straightforward SimCity action the rush was shut down cold.

    • Ever Dream | Glaives Adepts o'clock was up next with a Warp Prism to support them, however the Zerg was more than ready with his mass Lings and Queens, taking no losses in terms of Drones at all as he cleaned up the attack. From there, however, Solar decided fourth Hatches were for losers and instead built up his low econ army to push with, which was a problem as Stats is primarily known for his defense, so when the Swarm arrived at his gates the Protoss already had Shield Batteries and Immortals galore, holding off the aggro pretty comfortably. The "transition" for the Zerg after that was eventually taking his fourth and "teching up" to Banes in order to make his Ravagers look a bit better and although it might have felt closer than it really was, when Stats finally arrived on top of the creep and started Storming & smashing his way through the writing was on the wall for this one.

    M5 | TY [ 2 : 1 ] Stats | ★★☆☆☆ | Just A Little Unsteady

    • Nightshade | If you didn't watch tonight's games you would likely assume I was making this up, nevertheless believe it or not TY walked a few Marines and two Hellions across the map to kill a couple of Adepts and 12 Probes before the game even really got started, ending it instantly.

    • Obsidian | Terran players around the world who had at least basic pattern recognition on their side were prematurely popping the champagne already as TY secured a three base foothold with his Mech play on the huge bizarro map no less, however this series would still be far from over. While the Terran set up a borderline unbreakable position, Stats still managed to deny his sketchy fourth CC and pick off 24 SCVs with harassment as he was pressuring the front line, so TY felt compelled to counter attack with his then huge army supply lead which should have honestly secured him the match, the Protoss Champion however still had a little left in him, playing out the "base race" perfectly while basically walking on a tightrope and juggling four mouse pads in each hand, eventually killing off an equal amount of workers and expansions & even leaning on his Blink Stalkers to clean up the attack on his own bases. A timely tech up and recall with Phoenix Oracle then took care of TY's Speed Cloak Banshee terror and as the Terran got more and more thinly spread Stats forced his opponent to overextend one too many times and then simply counter punched his way into an unlikely victory.

    • Eternal Empire | TY's friendship with Mech ended in this one and his new best friend was a three pronged early attack using a Mine Drop, Liberator and Marine Tank at the front, resulting in 12 Probe kills by the end of it. Stats did what he could in this scenario, going across the map to deny the third CC from landing pretty much forever, however the Protoss eventually slipped up and allowed the Terran army to move out and push him back, running him all the way to his own Nexus, which was promptly sieged and brought to the brink, forcing Stats to try defending just before his Storm was done and as TY's forces pushed through regardless & the Terran revealed an untouched squad of Stim Marines to reinforce his assault the Protoss Champion tapped out reluctantly.

I was really excited for today's games, the joke was on me, I guess. There have been a lot of great days this Season, so if you missed tonight's shitshow you pretty much did yourself a favor.

    • Match of the Night - really has to be one of the flashback series displayed during the breaks, right? Jokes aside, lets just say there were more impressive maps and some performances tonight than matches being contested, if I had to pick one regardless it would obviously have to be M5 although you could make an argument for picking M3 just off Cure's ridiculous display of skill on the first map alone.

Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player:

    • Cure not only got the 4-0 and in doing so took down a long time nemesis of his, the not-Jin-Air Terran avoided Dark in the process for the Ro8 and that's honestly the biggest victory of the night. Funnily enough the only two times Cure has made it to the Playoffs of Code S the Terran then reached the Ro4 and it looks like history might be repeating itself with a slumping Dear as his next opponent, even though the Protoss is notorious for his PvT prowess, so if Cure is ever going to cash in on all that potential of his now would be the time, right?

    • TY started phenomenally well and then really kind of blew it. At first I thought tonight would be a pure repeat of his Ro24 performance, but I'll be the first to admit that wasn't the case at all, in fact you could see cracks everywhere, possibly most present during his throw in the Mech game on the bizarro map. The worst part now is the obvious, while Dark is in fact injured, it's impossible to know how long that will last or if it'll even be a factor by the time the Ro8 goes down, so TY will have to deal with the best Zerg left in the tournament because of his 2nd place tonight and that'll be no easy task if his play continues to drop off, so lets just say I'm more than a little worried for him.

    • Stats had a pretty awful day overall, if anything Solar and TY made him look a bit better than he realistically was. It really felt like he performed the same as his Ro24 showing and that just wasn't enough to push through tonight's competition which is to be expected. It's clear the Protoss Champion still has it in him and does a lot of things right, however over time more and more his predictability has become the detriment allowing everyone to take advantage of that weakness in one way or another and without Stats in peak form there's really nothing to offset that in order to allow him to win regardless all the time.

    • Solar might as well wipe this night from his memory, because there's nothing worth remembering from his performance tonight. I was curious if the players who got the bye into the Ro16 would look rusty or something of the sort, but I never expected this. Some of the Zerg's games were admittedly unfortunate, however others felt just nonsensical and I genuinely don't think there's much he can take away from today. Everyone has nightmarefuel days and unfortunately for Solar this was his, condolences & hopefully we see him more of his usual self next time instead.

As always, if you think differently let everyone know why in the comments below.

Catch you on Wednesday May 13th for hopefully better games in Group C where Trap will do what he can to reaffirm his position at the top of the food chain, soO will either truly arrive and obliterate everyone again or simply participate and be eliminated, PartinG might smash everyone over their heads with his bag of tricks and Bunny's going to try doing his best impression of himself from over a year ago to make it back to the Ro8.

Thanks as always for reading & see you when I see you! (:

"un-gating the power behind Microbial Shroud"

    Posted: 10 May 2020 02:01 AM PDT

(looking forward to seeing Day9 cast again, and like a lot of other stuff Blizz is doing...but the state of microbial shroud, I don't get how they think this is a real ability people will use.)

    https://starcraft2.com/en-us/news/23405326 Just over halfway down.

They use the words "un-gating the power" when taking about microbial shroud.

" Microbial Shroud no longer requires an upgrade. "

Careful there with "un-gating the power behind microbial shroud," it might actually hurt someone. If they accidentally click it, wasting precious APM. They've given us a 'nothing ability'...but now it's free!

If anything, it needs a longer research time. Gives us more time to cancel if we accidentally start it. It needs a flashing warning on screen "You have started to research microbial shroud! Are you trolling, or is this a mistake?"

Is this some kind of developer joke, that we're too familiar with SC2 meta & gameplay to understand?

At least it's good for protecting hydra from mass oracle.

Let us see teammate resources in team games.

    Posted: 09 May 2020 07:44 PM PDT

They could make it a toggle option in the gameplay menu. My friend and I play 2v2s and so many times we have to ask "Do you have/need any gas/minerals?" etc. This would allow us to make better decisions about resource management.

Another idea is to allow both players to check off "resource sharing" in the allies menu per player, to allow the other teammate to take your resources instead of just giving you resources. Making you check it off would prevent greifing in public team games.

Game 3 of MaNa vs SKillous pvp was insane! (No spoilers)

    Posted: 09 May 2020 10:21 AM PDT

It was one of the best Sc2 games Ive seen in a long time. Non-stop action, so much back and forth. There were so many times during the game I was sure it was gg, but the players somehow came back and keep fighting. Im pretty sure we just witness the revival of pvp!

Big shout out to WardiTV for all he's been doing for Sc2!

Edit: This game took place at the WardiTV Balance Test Mod Invitational! Go check it out!
