Physical exercise improves video game performance: What the study actually says

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:09 AM PST

So I got a hold of the study, and below is a little breakdown:

18 participants average age of 22

    2 females 16 males

    Bronze (N = 2), Silver (N = 9), Gold (N = 4), Diamond (N = 3)

    Within-subject design over three trials.

First trial was baseline measurements and graded exercise test, which was performed on a cycle ergometer. Participants did not do any sort of familiarization with the game. Unsure of if participants were allowed to bring their own mouse/keyboard or if they had to use what was provided.

The participants were split into two groups, consisting of either 20 minutes of rest and then 20 minutes of playing, or twenty minutes of cardiovascular exercise and then 20 minutes of playing.

Participants were randomized - assessors were not blinded.

The exercise protocol was 15 minutes of HIIT on the cycle ergometer, consisting of a 2.5 minute warm up, a ten-minute block of one-minute high intensity, one-minute low intensity, followed by another 2.5-minute cool down.

The rest protocol involved sitting on the ergometer for 15 minutes. Following the 15 minute block on the ergometer (whether rest or HIIT), each participant sat and read a book for 20 minutes, after that they each completed a questionnaire on whether they believed acute cardiovascular exercise could affect performance, and then began a customized game of League of Legends.

Cardiorespiratory fitness level was not associated with performance or accuracy, neither was enjoyment, current rank, amount of sitting, amount of physical activity, or cognitive score.

However, and as mentioned in the article that was posted, those who participated in the HIIT statistically eliminated more targets and had fewer accuracy errors. That, again, is the nice little takeaway, however it should be noted that the study is pretty underpowered, so you can't really say "Go out and do 15 minutes of high intensity interval training and you'll be kicking ass!" for certain. But you can't go wrong with being more active.

Now to touch on a couple of things, exercising makes you more tolerant to mental fatigue, so when you're playing a 25-minute game or you're playing an important BO5 (for big bags of money) you're able to better handle it. Increasing aerobic fitness will help to increase mental alertness and in making better decisions, which are vital to a game like Starcraft.

Pushing yourself physically helps you learn how to embrace uncomfortable situations. It also improves self-control and willpower by teaching you how to keep going even when your brain may be telling you to stop. As a result, research shows that people who undertake and endure exercise challenges tend to perform better in hard, yet ostensibly unrelated, areas of their lives, such as quitting smoking or being calm for an exam. Exercise imposes stress on the body, yes, but it also helps to decrease stress. Pushing yourself physically also helps you learn how to view stress as a challenge and strengthens your social ties - so you can foster the inner resources needed to effectively confront stress in all areas of life - and become a more resilient person in the process. With this, you can see yourself as someone who can choose to engage in difficult things, get through them, rather than to shy away and stay in your comfort zone.
