    GSL Code S 2020 S1 | Final | Rundown

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:14 AM PDT

The expected GSL AfreecaTvT Final was once again not meant to be as another underdog managed to upset the established order.

Namely it was Cure who found it within himself to reach for more after so many years of trying and failing, overcoming the dreaded Ro4 having previously been denied twice by the duo of INnoVation and TY himself - in other words, this was turning into the perfect narrative for one of the most glorious underdog revenge runs ever, if only he could both repeat what he'd done in the previous Round and then also subtract the inarguable collapse near its end.

You can tell I'm already reaching when there are two mandatory caveats to a possible upset here before we even get to talk about the favorite. TY had indeed lost to his foe as recently as the Ro16 this Season, yet regardless held every intangible over him - the experience in these high pressure situations, having specifically made it to two Code S Finals already and only losing against two of the greatest winners ever & as the final nail in the coffin holding a significant winning offline record over Cure in addition to all that.

Still, it certainly wouldn't be the first time things didn't go "according to plan" during this GSL - I mean, simply look at who both the finalists are and the monsters they had to go through to make it here - so with nothing guaranteed at the highest level the only thing we knew for certain at the end of the day was that one of these warriors would finally lift the Code S trophy for the very first time.

    Warning: Spoilers Ahead, Obviously

Dread it, run from it, a one-sided Code S Final still arrives - TY extended his tremendous streak of form in the Playoffs by delivering his best performance yet to completely shut down his opponent, turning the game on its head multiple times by displaying incredible killer instinct whenever any and all opportunities presented themselves.

    M1 | TY [ 4 : 0 ] Cure | ★★☆☆☆ | Hope They Remember You

    • Obsidian | The most notable thing at the start was that we finally weren't playing cross spawns on this great map, definitely opening up a lot more room to get funky, which TY did when he opted for a Battlecruiser rush with his followup being Mech. Cure on the other hand, also going Mech by the way, went for Cloaked Banshees instead and - after he stopped the BC shenanigans cold with just a Cyclone - those ended up earning him an overwhelming 20 worker lead thanks to the underdog's stellar harassment. With the clear advantage following the Banshee SCV massacre, the Terran then grew his lead further by getting an extra base up on his opponent as well climbing up an additional 10 workers, however the decision to only keep massing Hellions and Cyclones as his main army would come back to bite him as TY assembled every Tank and Battlecruiser he had to siege desperately before the econ deficit would make it impossible for him to win. It was finally around 10:05 when Cure's mental went boom as he tried using SCVs like human shields to clear out his tightly dug in opponent, resulting in 40 workers losing their lives while TY saved virtually all his BCs for the next rounds of harassment and attacks, at one point later on killing off a CC using Yamato spam alone, so as the overall supply lead grew more and more ridiculous it quickly became clear it was time to move on.

    • Ever Dream | The start on this map got a bit scrambled when two SCVs crashed into each other like drunks in the night, which meant TY had to immediately adjust from his presumably proxy two Barracks and as we've come to accept during this Season no one's prep outshines his even when things don't necessarily go right. As if to prove that point, before we knew it TY had assembled a hit squad consisting of one Tank, a few Marines and a Medivac with only minor additional support, yet it still allowed him to siege his opponent's ramp all the same as early as 04:40, denying mining for a critical amount of time, killing a bunch of SCVs, supply blocking Cure for what felt like forever and eventually forcing his workers to fight Marines, resulting in another SCV massacre and according knockout blow by TY, allowing him to go up two-nothing in the series.

    • Simulacrum | Regardless of what was attempted by either player at the start, their openings turned out to be a wash as solid defense on both sides denied any real damage from being taken. The first really interesting adjustment came from Cure in the form of producing two Ravens at a time, which he hid and stacked up to culminate in a fleet of six that ended up sniping Stim and 16 SCVs to go with it as the icing on the cake, not to mention a forced lift on the third and even a Tank or two going down along the way, overall giving the underdog his best chance to win today. TY, however, was completely uninterested in going quietly into the night and so brute forced a counterattack with his own Ravens to cause a lift himself and kill pretty much the same worker amount. When we saw Cure just go for killing workers again it was at that point TY decided the time for taking turns harassing each other was up and so he went for the throat instead, Doom dropping around 11 minutes to siege his opponent's production only for Cure to not only clean things up at home but also murder 30 more SCVs around the third base and natural expansion of the enemy Terran, once again taking a commanding lead in econ. Like nothing even happened, TY leaned on his air superiority to take out a CC in retaliation and despite losing a large chunk of his army and opening up an upgrade window deficit Cure could very well have used to still win the game, TY - instead of taking his foot off the gas and succumbing to the econ deficit - simply kept up the pressure with his still significant army, took a great position sieging the third again around 14:55 and then Doom dropped even harder, eventually finessing his way into winning the fights on both fronts, making his army supply lead insurmountable as his opponent had no production to keep up with him despite the very real econ advantage he was never given an opportunity to use.

    • Golden Wall | When the suspiciously early SCVs passed each other like ships in the night again at the start, this final game slowed down to a crawl with each player going up to three bases largely uncontested. Both our Terrans then went for Bio this time around and eventually started fighting over the middle of the map with TY winning the large majority of those engagements, fueling his signature macro engine in the process as he was completely uninterrupted at home. The use of spotter Supply Depos around the map and clean movements with his army made the favorite even more unbeatable here, ultimately allowing him to maintain his edge until he maxed out first and laid siege as expected. Cure did break out, however he lost a ton in the process while TY only sacrificed a couple of Tanks as he took more and more bases on his side of the map while handily containing his severely strained opponent. Cure tried using guerrilla tactics to make TY focus on the wrong thing as he was attempting to siege his production, only for the favorite to find that idea appealing himself and launch a devastating counter attack that killed a CC right away, marooned the majority of Cure's forces back at home, took out SCVs left and right and basically completely snowballed the game further out of the underdog's control, at which point all that was left was for TY was to pull off the proverbial checkmate around 16:30, which turned out to be loading up a bunch of Medivacs that flanked and split Cure's last real army off from his base, allowing TY to swallow him whole and finally lift the coveted trophy.

Deceiving score with an undeniable result, from clutch play in the key moments to unshakable resolve despite having to adjust every game on the fly, TY had it all tonight.

    • Map of the Night - it absolutely has to be Simulacrum for me, that was ultimately the back-breaker there would be no recovering from (you could even tell by the way Cure gg-ed in that one and his body language after that, at that point he knew it was over). The level TY displayed tonight was simply insane, he made the outcome look inevitable and nothing was more impressive in my eyes than the multiple tremendous comebacks on the third map.

Finally, here are some of my closing thoughts on each player:

    • TY has finally had the ball bounce his way after having to suffer through Finals against both Maru and Zest, you could tell he was ready for the trophy tonight. It's unreal how long it took for this to happen in the context of his greatness in GSL over the years, all that was missing was the Gold medal and thankfully it was finally earned deservedly so after knocking out the last Zerg, the last Protoss and now finally the last Terran (TY is the 4th race confirmed). Also, definitely feel free to ignore anyone meme-ing him about who he got to defeat in the Final, especially in the context of both their performances during this Season leading up into today.

    • Cure had a great run - I mean, he literally defeated Stats, TY, Dear and INnoVation to make it here - but the danger is greatest when the finish line is in sight. Things could have gone differently had he closed things out after getting that ridiculous lead on Obsidian and it wasn't even too late for him to still turn things around had he gotten the job done on Simulacrum, however as soon as he let both those opportunities go it was basically all over. I still think he accomplished a lot in this GSL and looked good doing it, so here's hoping he'll find his way back to the top after digesting this loss and carve out a piece of history for himself accordingly.

As always, if you think differently or have something interesting to add, feel free to do so in the comments below.

The qualifiers for GSL S2 are already finished, you can see who made it and how they managed to do so as always on Liquipedia.

Catch you next time, here's hoping the quarantine measures will soon be fully gone so we can get fans back in the studio, if you missed it there was a great segment showing off all their great submissions, definitely recommend you check it out.

Thanks as always for reading & see you when I see you! (:

Does anyone else like Youtube live streaming over Twitch?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 07:13 AM PDT

I normally stick to Twitch when it comes to watching Starcraft tournaments. However, this time AfreecaTV had GSL on youtube and I have to say I like it much better. Everything ran smoother, chat wasn't filled with cancerous people, and if I didn't see it live everything was broken down per match in a video to video basis. I also found it easier to skip ahead through commercials, whereas Twitch vods seem slow and clunky when doing this. I'm not sure if twitch does this but Youtube constantly reminded me about when each match was as well. Anyone else agree?

Ad placement during TSL 5 VoD

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:44 PM PDT

I'll start by saying, I watch Twitch without adblock on so hopefully some money goes to the creator. But the placement of the ads during the VoD from today were atrocious. I'm talking literally every single push in the game was interrupted by an ad. I don't know if Team Liquid has control over where these ad go, but if they do THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME is not were you put ads.

In retrospect, the Pylon Show conversation about Cure in GSL was 100% accurate from all 4 people.

The teams competing today are from the ranks of Bronze 3 to 4100mmr but with the added rule that a team cannot exceed an average mmr of 3440 to keep it fair.

We hope many of you will tune in today on Twitch to support these players and support the 2v2 format!
The plan is to host more of these tournaments in the coming year(s) so if you've missed out on this one don't fret!

If you'd like to follow along and check out the funny team names people have come up with go check out the Challonge.

If you'd like to support Platinum Heroes or the players playing today you can do that through the Matcherino we've set up. There's options to donate to the prize pool or to the Platinum Heroes Community. Additionally there's a matcherino code you can use "Platinum2v2".
