Tomorrow I get my computer and will be able to play SC2 finally.. Posted: 21 Jan 2020 05:48 PM PST Hello all, just wanted to say I'm excited to join the community. I randomly got super interested in watching SC2 videos on YouTube about a year ago. I really enjoy watching Beastyqt, PiG, Winter and Florencio. Tomorrow's the first day I'll be able to actually play and I'm stoked. I have a lot to learn but I'm excited for the journey. I'll probably play Protoss to start (I know, I know), but I'm also interested in Terran. Wish me luck! [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Jan 2020 11:19 AM PST Whenever I see another Terran on the loading screen, I lose the will to live. The early game is stressful and in late game, when I make tanks and marines, I have no idea what to do with that army . It seems like I can't drop, because they have turrets, I can't attack into the siege tanks and I can't attack where there are no siege tanks, cause they have sensor towers. If they are playing defensively, I guess I could expand, but what do I do with the extra money? Usually, I just get impatient and suicide my army into siege line or fall asleep on the keyboard and suddenly 20 BCs are in my main. It's not like I lose every TvT. But wins don't feel satisfying either. They feel like my opponent doesn't understand the matchup even more. I don't know what to do. Should I all-in every game? Should I try a different playstyle? I'm just diamond, so I don't need to play the most optimal comp. Or should I just get good and learn how to play properly? Maybe TvT is actually a beautiful matchup, just misunderstood? Are there any resources for learning TvT specifically? Sorry for the wine, but I'm Terran. We have the right to whine about every race. Even Terran. [link] [comments]
Do I need SC2 base game to be able to install Nova Covert Ops? Posted: 21 Jan 2020 09:50 PM PST I ask because I don't know if I can find all 3 original SC2 install packs in my house. I haven't played SC2 in a while, and I'd like to try the Nova campaign on my new laptop without having to scavenge for my original SC2 discs. [link] [comments]

How flexible is the fourth wall as far as character knowledge of it goes? Posted: 21 Jan 2020 04:50 PM PST Something that always fascinated me and also registered as a mindfuck is that at least some of the characters in StarCraft are sort of self-aware. Whereas the units in WarCraft 3 are completely self-aware (like the Sorceress saying "Click me baby, one more time" and "Maybe you should get a strategy guide"), the units in StarCraft seem like they have inconsistent knowledge of the fourth wall. Some units, especially ones who take their roles seriously, will interpret the player clicking on them as their commander "procrastinating" or otherwise teasing them. The Carrier strings his sentences while being clicked on ("Our enemies are legion / and still you procrastinate! / Command, or you will be relieved! / This is not an idle threat!") and someone like Raynor basically just says "Look commander, do you mind?" The thing is, in SC2, the player character doesn't register in the world as an entity anymore, and Blizzard thought very hard about this while designing unit quotes, which is very endearing because they care about the lore enough to make it consistent, even with fourth-wall breaks like click quotes. If you click on Raynor enough times, he'll say things like "My dad raised me right, tried to anyway" which is basically him muttering to himself to pass the time, which is pretty much the same thing as when you click on him in the campaign when he's just hanging out in the cantina and says thing like "I should go for a walk outside... oh wait..." Somebody like Artanis takes his role seriously, and inspires himself by thinking inspirational thoughts. This also explains why Kerrigan was outright evil even down to her click quotes at the beginning of SC2, there was Amon invovlement and she wasn't herself. Something must've happened to Kerrigan between Brood War and SC2 that caused her to definitively lose her free will. We don't get her perspective of 'self' in SC1 since we're Cerebrates in her campaigns, so it's possible that Amon really was orchestrating everything from the beginning, including her 'queen bitch' persona. Going back to my earlier point just to clarify, I'm trying to say that I have no idea how aware StarCraft characters are of the fourth wall, and it's possible that the SC universe is just one where human will registers to themselves as their own thoughts or something. The thing is, WarCraft 3 units are largely aware that they're in a video game, and characters like the Sorceress will interpret being clicked on multiple times as creepy flirting and will try to keep saying things just to amuse the player. She's like a character in a play who also knows exactly what the player's role is, and she sees behind their 'king character' or whoever the melee Human leader would be in melee. The reason all of this is so confusing is that we're trying to figure out how exactly the characters of StarCraft think, and how they interpret directions from their superiors. Since we're just players and right click, we don't get to see the issue itself directly being ordered. We can see things like how our orders would be made manifest in the universe (the SCV in SC2 has a radio/walkie-talkie strapped to their chest, probably a two-way for constant communication and the marine literally sees your waypoint as a projected spot on the terrain to walk to through their flashy blue heads up display) which made everything a lot clearer. I mentioned this in a thread back in like August during a discussion on how unit orders 'work in the canon', but the complexity of a communication device would depend on how many orders and interpretations the commander would need to convey to the unit. SCVs can just be told to "build a supply depot, then a bunker all relative to such and such a structure" through a radio, but Liberators might need to actually see the commander to interpret things like hand gestures and would therefore need to have you on screen (the unit quote "We have you on screen") due to being high-micro units who need to interpret complex directions quickly with the aid of computers and human words, two forms of communication that can integrate well if you figure out how to make it work nicely. Unit quotes from the Tempest like "This vessel was not designed for social interaction!" makes it seem like the commander is just chatting with whatever unit they've clicked on for at least five times, or making jokes ("It's a CYCLONE, not a CYCLOPS") and wasting valuable time that could otherwise be spent on macro or micro. QoL - Save camera locations for each map Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:51 AM PST If you are using camera hotkeys, you have to set them up every time. Almost always you set it up exactly same way given a map and your spawn location. It would be great if the game could just remember camera locations for each map and spawn location in the map and load it automatically at the beginning of the game. If for some reason you want different camera locations, then no problem, you could just set it up as you please. This QoL wouldn't cause any imbalance, it'd just reduce unnecessary clicking at the start of the game. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
